3 Continued on p. 4 ICHRIE PUBLICATIONS Communiqué Communiqué is a monthly newsletter that includes timely news and information about the world of hospitality and tourism education, special features and a Professional Opportunities section listing employment openings in the industry. This publication is circulated through the postal service to members throughout the hospitality and tourism industry and is also available online (with membership). Distribution is approximately 2,500 per issue with 12 issues a year. CHRIE May 2008 Volume 22 Number 5 International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education 2810 N. Parham Road, Suite 230 Richmond, Virginia USA Telephone 01 (804) Fax 01 (804) chrie@chrie.org Website I Thank You Peter Jones is President of ICHRIE and is also a Professor in the School of Management at The University of Surrey, Surrey, UK I am fairly certain that I am the first President of International CHRIE in its sixty year history that is able to say - I have been invited to meet Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, London on 6 May The reception is being held in recognition of the role that the British Hospitality Industry plays in the life of the United Kingdom. Having got your attention (maybe!), one of the tough things about being ICHRIE President is writing a column in every edition of the Communiqué for a year and still have something interesting to say! So far I have written about the importance of appointing members to ICHRIE Committees, the internationality of ICHRIE, implementing Vision 2015, potential new ICHRIE products and services, improvements to ICHRIE services, managing change, and networking globally. So what to write about in this column? Actually it s a no brainer. On 15 May I am visiting the ICHRIE Office in Richmond and then 18 May chairing the ICHRIE Executive meeting in Chicago (by the way, I hope to see some of you at the Alligator Hour there!). So my column this time is dedicated to all the ICHRIE staff that serve our association. ICHRIE is like a swan swimming upstream. The serene, splendid bird you see on the surface is the Executive and Board, but the forward propulsion is actually provided by the staff paddling like fury against the current of deadlines, enquiries, and Feedback on Proposed Federations Cynthia S. Deale, PhD, is the Interim Director of Chapters of ICHRIE and Associate Professor of Hospitality & Tourism Management at Western Carolina University. Since my last piece in the Communiqué, I have communicated with numerous members of ICHRIE about the proposed model for restructuring our organization. As mentioned in my last Communiqué article, the current proposal is to restructure the United States ICHRIE chapters into four federations. These would be formed by grouping the states into the following federations: the U.S. West Federation (with 192 members), the U.S. Central Federation (with 212 members), the U.S. Southeast Federation (with 268 members), and the Northeast Federation (with 245 members). The proposed reorganization tries to consider already existing chapter relationships and attempts to balance the number of members Continued on p. 4 between the federations. The major reasons for this reorganization are to try to create an environment to provide members with better opportunities for participation and to more closely parallel the organizational structure of our international members, such as the AsiaPacific CHRIE and EuroCHRIE federations. Feedback I have received from ICHRIE members over the last month about the proposed changes has been varied, although primarily positive. Several members have expressed enthusiastic support for this change in our organizational structure, noting that they believe that the larger federations would offer them the opportunity to create more meaningful events for federation members and allow them to network with a more diverse set of colleagues to share ideas for teaching, industry relationships, career development, and research projects. Other members have articulated the need to make this a truly global organization by unifying the structure of ICHRIE around the world, and still others have stated that they believe that the streamlined nature of federations might make it easier for members to communicate with each other and increase the level of activity throughout ICHRIE. A couple of members conveyed a desire to become more involved in ICHRIE themselves May 2008 Check Out What s New On Our Web Site! 5 Have you checked out our website? The International CHRIE website is averaging over 6,000 hits per day or 200,000 hits per month! Checking out the features and frequently-updated information on ICHRIE s website ( is one of the best ways to stay informed on what s happening in the hospitality and tourism industry. One of the clear reasons the ICHRIE website is the #1 place for hospitality and tourism educators to visit is the Professional Opportunities listing right on the home page! Just ask Niagara University s Gary Praetzel, PhD, who knows firsthand what an invaluable resource ICHRIE offers, From my perspective, money spent running an online ad for faculty positions with ICHRIE is money well spent. Online ads with ICHRIE provide your best value in generating the results colleges and universities need for faculty recruitment. College and universities all over the world know to get the results they are looking for from their faculty openings, there s only one place to post them - ICHRIE s online Professional Opportunities listing. In addition, ICHRIE members can access publications for review and/or download.
