2 THE CREDIT SYSTEM Kaunas University of Technology, as all universities in Lithuania, uses its national credit system based on student workload with an average of 1600 working hours per academic year. 1 KTU credit = 1 ECTS One credit equals to approximately 27 hours of studying, including lectures, exercises, practical training, independent research, group studies or written reports. One year of studies is: equal to 60 ECTS credits, divided into 2 semesters, 30 credits each.

5 INDIVIDUAL STUDY PLAN The individual study plan is a formal document: exchange students make their study plans together with their sending institution; degree students follow the general curriculum of their study programme, but they can choose electives / optional courses: foreign language courses, etc. It is permitted to opt out of the selected courses and switch to other ones: due to timetable clashes; when the Faculty administration cancels the course; when the intended student quota for the chosen course is overfilled or too low.

6 GRADING SCALE AT KTU Grades have the following point values and meaning: 5 and above is a passing grade, 4 and lower a failing grade. 7 ASSESSMENT OF STUDY OUTCOMES At the first lecture, the lecturer of a subject/module will provide you with a detailed programme for the course and all assignments. The final grade consists of several intermediary assessments (for example, mid-term exam, laboratory works, presentation, course paper) and final exam. For example (Philosophy): Components Themes No. Hours % Colloquium x Individual work x Exam All: x If a student fails to pass all required assignments for the course, they are not allowed to take the exam.

8 EXAMS Every course unit is concluded with either a written or oral examination. The student who is unable to take the examination because of the illness or other valid reason may apply to the Faculty Dean for taking examinations at different times during the session or for extending the examination period (max for 1 month). Each student must inform the International coordinator of their Faculty on the first day of illness and present doctor s statement upon their return to classes. 1st time a student can retake examination without payment, 2nd they must pay a fixed fee (14,48 ). Credit for a failed course can be obtained only by repeating and passing the course.

9 ACADEMIC INFORMATION SYSTEM KTU Academic information system: study plans, marks (grades), scedules, announcements etc. KTU Professors-students communication system (moodle): study materials (slides, tasks, etc.), messages from professors. Important! During the whole study period, information related to the process of studies will be sent only to the Student s provided by the University.

10 IMPORTANT NOTES The first and second year undergraduate students are required to attend all lectures and practicals. For the third and fourth year undergraduate students and all graduate students only practicals are compulsory. Defence of the final thesis (final project) is permitted only if all the requirements of the study programme are fulfilled.
