3 Parents and Parenting Another name for mothers and fathers is parents. A mother is a parent. A father is a parent. Any person who has a child is a parent. Parents must work hard to take care of their children. They must love them. They must help them and teach them. They must give them food and a home. They must keep them safe. There are many things to teach children. For example, teach them to cook. Teach them to read. Help them with their schoolwork. There are many ways to love children. For example, hold them when they are crying. Listen to them and talk to them. Go on vacations and trips with them. There are many ways to keep children safe. For example, do not leave little children home alone. Don t lock children in a car while you go shopping. Teach children how and when to call 911. 8 Some Ways to Help School Children Parents need to help their children get a good education. Other people can help children get a good education, too. Here are some things parents can do: 1. Walk with your child to the bus. Or walk with your child to school. 2. Look in your child s backpack for notes from school. 3. Help your child learn to read. 4. Help your child learn to study. 5. Help your child with his homework. 6. Look at things your child draws or writes. 7. Have a desk or table at home, where your child can study. 8. For example, You cannot watch TV until you finish your homework. 2. Give children chores to do, such as cleaning their room or washing the dishes. 3. Be kind to your children. Love them. Teach them to be kind to others. Teach them to love each other. 4. Teach your child to do something for the community. For example, teach your child to pick up trash and to recycle newspapers and cans. 5. Teach children to make healthy choices. For example, teach them why drugs and gangs are dangerous. 6.
