ST. BEDE'S COLLEGE Welcome to ST. BEDE S COLLEGE SIXTH FORM
Our mission is to inspire, encourage and enable every one of our pupils to change the world by fulfilling their role in it.
Achievement throughout the school is good... there are some examples of excellent achievement especially in examination success. ISI Inspection Report 2013 CHALLENGING The Extended Project Qualification An opportunity to research any academic subject to university level. Recent topics range from European Economics to The Evolution of Mammalian Teeth! Charity Work Sixth Form students organise our annual pilgrimage to Lourdes and lead the School Charity Committee - we recently raised 4,000 for CAFOD s appeal for the Philippines in one week. The Duke of Edinburgh s Award We support 150 students each year through the Awards at Gold and Bronze level. Sport We offer the chance to excel in a wide range of sports from our highly successful netball, football, rugby and hockey teams, to skiing and rock climbing. Open University Science Short Modules Around 20% of our Upper Sixth take the chance to experience university level study in areas including Drug Development, Engineering and Forensic Science. Liturgy As a Catholic school we offer the chance to develop in faith through our General Religion lessons and some Sixth Form students choose to become Eucharistic Ministers. National Competitions Our students achieved national recognition in 2013/14 in Engineering, Public Speaking, Netball, Chemistry, Maths, Model United Nations, Creative Writing, Biology, Debating and much more... Music, Art and Drama Students have the chance to take part in our regular productions (last year Oliver! ) and exhibitions, tour with the Jazz Band, sing in the choir or learn something new in Early Music Club. Mentoring Many Sixth Form students spend time working one-to-one with younger pupils, helping them while improving their own academic understanding and communication skills. 3
My son has been happy and felt secure with good teaching. He leaves with confidence and is looking forward to his future. Small classes with experienced teachers and all the resources needed A typical A level class has students. Small tutor groups with experienced tutors 10 students in a tutor group means you can access truly personal advice. We also hold a dedicated parents evening in September for Sixth Form parents to meet tutors early in the year and share concerns and goals. Study support We provide specialist support for those who need to improve their English or have other special needs. The Father Bernard Jackson Sixth Form Centre Opened in 2012, the Centre contains a dedicated workspace and IT room for Sixth Form students as well as a café and a base for UCAS and Careers advice. The Maher Library A space to read, study and learn with its own dedicated ICT suite and full-time expert librarian. Kevan and Leigh Brayshaw, Parents SUPPORTIVE Drop-ins and Saturday revision sessions An ongoing programme to provide help at all times if you have problems. University Fair and personalised UCAS advice We hold our own annual Higher Education Fair and biennial Careers Convention, organise university visits and support you through every stage of the UCAS process. Lectures, talks and trips We take advantage of opportunities for external support and enrichment at home and through our trips (for example in 2013/14 we celebrated our 18th Annual Geology lecture, our 5th USA Economics trip and our first Big Bang Science Fair). Support for specialist applications We provide classes for Oxbridge applicants and those looking to study Medicine and Law.
The good subject knowledge of the teachers and the excellent relationships between staff and pupils contribute significantly to the pupils progress. ISI Inspection Report
The pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is excellent... Respect for those from different cultures is evident in this multi-cultural school. ISI Inspection Report 2013
St Bede s has given me the greatest memories. Isabella Renehan, Upper Sixth FRIENDLY It s easy to claim you re a friendly Sixth Form. We could point to the fantastic atmosphere at the Leavers Ball, the strong support for the Sixth Form Futsal competition, the 60+ clubs our Sixth Formers take part in or (perhaps) the enthusiastic singing at the Sixth Form Christmas Dinner. But don t just take our word for it. This is what our students and teachers say: I expected to feel initially isolated but never did as everyone was friendly and teachers were very supportive Elizabeth Sutton, Lower Sixth (joined St Bede s in 2013) Everyone was very welcoming. I made friends immediately due to the very friendly environment Sophie Pownall, Lower Sixth (joined St Bede s in 2013) I moved here at the end of Year 8. It was a very easy change and everyone gave you the feeling you were welcome and were very friendly Luisa Schumacher, Lower Sixth (joined St Bede s in 2010) St Bede s has given me a great education and friends for life Adam Williams, Upper Sixth I ve taught in a few schools, but I noticed something different about the Sixth Form at St Bede s. They are very comfortable working with each other but they also welcome new students very quickly. After a couple of weeks there s no real way to tell who has just joined Mr Hepburn, Subject Leader Chemistry (joined St Bede s in 2010) 7
St Bede s has provided my daughter with an outstanding all-round education, good values and life skills. Thank you. Jennifer Devine, Parent SUCCESSFUL Some of the all-round highlights from 2013/14: 61 % 21 of our students went to Russell Group Universities (compared to a national average of 23%). St Bede s students achieved places at Oxford and Cambridge. of A levels achieved grades A*-B - with a 100% pass rate. Lower Sixth student volunteers helped with the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes % 2 Sixth Form students achieved Gold or Silver Awards in the National Science and Mathematics Olympiads. students travelled on our US trip to Washington and New York. Engineering Club teams won prizes at the Regional Big Bang Science Fair and one qualified for the National Finals. The Debating Team beat reigning international champions Withington Girls School in the regional heats of the ongoing Debating Matters competition. The 1st XI Football team won the ISFA Sixes Plate Trophy and the Blackrock College Challenge Trophy. They also won the ISFA Northern Eights competition.
The quality of attainment in the Sixth Form is further exemplified by the high proportion of first choices to which the Year 13 leavers depart. ISI Inspection Report
