September 27: St. Vincent de Paul In 1625, founded the Congregation of the Missions which today numbers almost St. Vincent is the patron saint of charities, hospitals, and prisoners. September 28: St. Wenceslaus Patron saint of the Czech Republic and Slovakia September 29: Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael These bibilical messengers signify God s transcendence and loving care. Michael is the patron saint of security forces and the sick. Gabriel of telecommunications and the postal service. Raphael is the patron saint of travelers and the blind. September 30: St. Jerome St. Jerome was a devoted monk and wrote numerous commentaries and authored Latin translation of the Bible. One of the four great doctors of the Latin Church. 7 Rector s Ramblings ~ Fr. Stephen McKinley, OFM Conv. Rector of the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe: Marytown ~ Dear Friends, This week we will conclude our very quick look at the Liturgy of the Word. The Liturgy of the Word concludes with the Universal Prayer or the Prayer of the Faithful. The Prayer of the Faithful may be recited or sung or the response of the people may be sung while the prayer itself is spoken. The response for the prayers can be varied. There are at least 4 options given. (1) Lord we ask you, hear our prayer, (2) Hear us, O Christ, (3) Lord, hear our prayer and (4) Kyrie, eleison (Greek for Lord, have mercy. This Greek phrase is the only Greek found in both the ordinary and extraordinary form of the Mass. The Prayer of the Faithful seems to have its origin in the 18 blessings of the synagogue service. These blessings contain a request for individual and universal needs. The Prayers of the Faithful can be traced back to a very early time and we included in almost every place. St. Justin, martyr, writing in the early 2 nd century says that during the liturgy of Baptism all offer prayers in common for ourselves, for him who has just been enlightened (baptized) and for people everywhere (I Apoligia 65:1). Over the centuries for various reasons the Prayers of the Faithful were dropped from the liturgy. Before the Novus Ordo was introduced, the only time the Prayers of the Faithful were used was on Good Friday. We might be familiar with these today as they include the let us kneel and let us stand instruction given by the priest or deacon. Another name for the Prayers of the Faithful is the General Intercessions because they go beyond the needs of the gathered community present at any given time. They should include the needs of the Universal Church, the needs of public authorities and the salvation of the world, those burdened by any kind of difficulty and the local community s needs. The celebrant begins and ends the Prayer of the Faithful from the chair. The intentions should be sober and succinct and they should express the prayer of the entire community. The intentions of the Prayer of the Faithful should always have a communal flavor. For instance, it is more proper to pray for all the sick and the suffering than to pray for one person in particular. We pray for all the dead before remembering those from the community that have recently been called by the Lord. They are the Prayer of the Faithful and as such, include the faithful of a given parish, diocese and the universal church. They are the Prayer of ALL the faithful no matter where they assemble. With the conclusion of the Prayer of the Faithful, the Liturgy of the Word comes to a close. Next time we will begin to look at the second major part of the Mass the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
