1 Routine Practices/Precautions Routine Precautions are Workplace Practices that are used to protect staff, volunteers and students from exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. By assuming that each patient is infected with a communicable disease, you can prevent the spread of illness or injury to yourself or others by following these routine techniques: Blood/Body Fluid: If you discover blood or body fluids, contact a nurse or other health care worker or your supervisor. Do not try and dispose of or clean up blood or other body fluids yourself, immediately get assistance. If you accidently come in contact with blood/body fluids, wash your hands immediately with soap and water and follow up with your supervisor. Latex Sensitivity/Allergies There are certain areas of the hospital that may use latex products. If you have an allergy or sensitivity to latex, please let your coordinator know.. Needles and Sharps: If you discover used needles or other sharp objects, contact a nurse or other health care worker or your supervisor. Do not try and dispose of this yourself, immediately get assistance. Needle Stick Injury Protocol Notify a nurse and IMMEDIATELY get medical attention, go to the Emergency Department Consult with your volunteer coordinator for COMPLETION OF AN INCIDENT REPORT Protective Gear You may see staff wearing protective gear such as masks and/or protective eye equipment. PRECAUTION SIGNS USED AT GROVES Isolation signs are located on the patient s door, or if the patient is in a multi-bed area it will be pinned to the curtain - Volunteers: Isolation signs mean DO NOT ENTER - HELP Volunteers: can enter Contact isolation ONLY
2 Acknowledge and Adhere to Safety Signage Posted in the Hospital Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) include gloves, gowns, masks, hair nets, rubber gloves, dust masks, hearing protection, safety boots, and/or goggles. Use PPE before handling any new product. Protect yourself when using WHMIS or Non-WHMIS products, information regarding use of personal protective equipment is available on the product s Supplier Label (i.e. Precautions) and the Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). REPORT ALL INJURIES/ACCIDENTS/ UNUSUAL OCCURRENCES IMMEDIATELY An accident/incident or hazardous situation is any unplanned event that results in, or has the potential to result in harm to a volunteer. For example: falls, needle-stick injuries, strains and sprains. In the event of an accident or incident while on duty as a Volunteer, the Volunteer is to seek appropriate health care and notify his/her supervisor or delegate and the Volunteer Coordinator to report the incident. WORKPLACE HAZARDOUS MATERIAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (WHMIS) In keeping with Ontario Legislation, all volunteers are provided instruction regarding WHMIS. It is important to keep in mind that we are in an environment where potentially hazardous materials and substances exist. Although it is the expectation that volunteers will not handle WHMIS controlled products, we all have a responsibility to be cautious and knowledgeable of potentially hazardous materials. The WHMIS symbols on the following page help to identify potentially hazardous materials if a chemical/material is not handled properly. Before handling any product, check the label for potential hazard symbols and safe handling instructions.

4 MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (MSDS): Supplied by the manufacturer of the product Details the safe handling, use and storage of hazardous materials used in the work area Must be updated every 3 years These sheets contain information on every potentially hazardous substance used in the hospital. These sheets contain safety information such as the contents of the substance, first aid, precautions, safe handling instructions, etc. The Master Inventory is the most up-to-date inventory and is found on the left side menu of the hospital Intranet under the title MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (includes all products used within the hospital)
5 SAFETY LABELS All containers of potentially hazardous materials must have one of two WHMIS labels: A Supplier Label or a Workplace Label.
