3 HOLLAND AND AGRICULTURE Agriculture/-business is of great importance to the Dutch economy! Approximately 10% of Gross Domestic Product 1 out of 10 jobs Strong international orientation (especially EU) Agro-export in 2010: 65 billion Euros (almost 20% of total Dutch exports; 25% to Germany) Holland is world's second-largest exporter of agricultural products Agro-import in 2010: 40 billion Euros (> 10% of total Dutch imports; 20% from Germany) Important sectors are dairy, livestock and horticulture 3

5 HOLLAND AND HORTICULTURE Dutch horticulture is in 2010 responsible for 39% of the agricultural production = 7,9 billion Euros. Furthermore in 2010: The export = 15,5 billion Euros The import = 8,2 billion Euros Employment = fte Contribution to the surplus of Dutch trade balance = 19%. Horticulture is important for the Dutch economy!! 5

7 WHY IS HORTICULTURE SUCCESSFUL? Mild sea-climate Many consumers nearby (Triangle Berlin, London and Paris) Centre of production and trade History of sharing knowledge Growers and traders are entrepreneurs Growers are very innovative; willing to cooperate innovation is in the genes of the Dutch growers!! Auction system (flowers) Cooperation between growers, (seed) industry, suppliers, research, education, ministries etc. 7

8 DEVELOPMENTS Decreasing number of growers Size of the firms is increasing Full attention on innovation, esp. energy saving Growing role for big retail companies Concentration in centres, the so called Greenport's like Westland, Aalsmeer and Venlo. 8

10 HORTICULTURE AND POLICY The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture & Innovation: Sets a general policy for the agricultural sector; Promotes sustainable, viable, innovative and internationally competitive agribusiness; Makes efforts to meet the demands regarding safety and quality of food; So the Ministry stimulates and facilitates agribusiness but, does not grow flowers, the growers do!! 10

11 INDUSTRIAL POLICY New government since October 2010 New industrial policy: room for entrepreneurs to do business and to grow distinctive in the world benefits from the improving world trade exploits growth opportunities in emerging markets Achieve sustainable economic growth And.. choose for TOP sectors, like horticulture and propagation material Top team (companies, scientists and government) will advise the Minister by May on ambitions and priorities of the sector This will lead to a agenda, including a plan of action. 11

14 ENERGY SAVING The Netherlands have big natural gas resources Growers use gas to heat the greenhouse Energy costs are 25% of total costs Agro agreement greenhouses sector 2020, an agreement between sector and departments 14

15 GREENHOUSES AS SOURCE OF ENERGY Program: greenhouses as source of energy Innovation and action program for substantial reduction of: Dependence on fossil fuels CO2 emission Ambition: In 2020 new built glasshouses will be energy neutral on an economic base 15

16 GREENHOUSES AS SOURCE OF ENERGY Energy transition greenhouses is an initiative of: The horticultural product board The growers The department And research institutes, energy consultants, suppliers, etc. Motivation: Cost price reduction (20 30% at present) Security of supply Sustainable horticulture Decreasing CO2 emission License to produce = private/public partnership! 16
