1 Maps and Globes - Study Guide Name: LESSON 1 Vocabulary 1. map - a picture that shows the location of places 2. map title - tells what the map is about 3. globe - a small round model of Earth 4. continent - one of seven large land areas 5. ocean - one of the large areas of salt water on Earth 6. Equator - an (imaginary) line around the middle of a map or globe that is halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole Study Guide: 1. The Equator is a line drawn on a map or globe halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole. 4. North is the direction when moving toward the North Pole. 5. Equator - an (imaginary) line around the middle of a map or globe that is halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole 3. 5 LESSON 4 - Using a Compass Rose to determine direction from one place to another Vocabulary 1. compass rose - a drawing showing the directions on a map 2. cardinal directions - the main directions: north, south, east, west 3. intermediate directions - directions between cardinal directions: northeast (NE), northwest (NW), southwest (SW), southeast (SE) Study guide: 23. The compass rose is a drawing on a map that helps us find the direction when traveling from one place to another. 24. The main directions are called cardinal directions. They are labeled N, E, S, W, and those letters stand for north, east, south, and west. 25. In between those main directions, we can even use the intermediate directions. 26.
