1 French Easter Revision Lists COMMON ENTRANCE 13+ Exam The exam comprises four papers: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each paper is worth 25%. The Listening exam will take place in the Theatre on Tuesday, 13 th May. The speaking exam will take place on Monday, 12 th May. Paper 1: this exam will include a conversation covering two presentations (selected by you) from the topics listed below. This exam should last for approximately four minutes. Paper 2: this exam will include a role play followed by a conversation covering two presentations (one selected by you, one selected by the examiner) from the topics listed below. This exam should last for approximately six minutes. Speaking Exam Role Play (Paper 2 only) Make sure you know the Key Role Play Structures - Page 3 of the Speaking Exam Booklet. Presentation / Conversation 1. House, Home, Daily Routine and Chores 2. Personal Description, Family, Friends and Pets 3. Free Time and Holiday Activities 4. Life and Work at School Make sure you are familiar with the question bank in the Speaking Exam Booklet. In the exam you will choose your strongest presentation. After speaking for about thirty seconds you will answer questions so that a conversation develops By learning all four presentations, you will be covering all CE topics and this will help you enormously in the listening, reading and writing exams. Don t forget to practise writing the presentations out accurately. General Revision You should refer to your Revision Folder, which includes: 3. Vocabulary lists These pages comprise more obscure CE vocab which could feature in the Reading and Listening exams 4. CE Grammar Revision Booklet 5. Extension Grammar Booklet This booklet comprises past and future tense explanations and Foundation GCSE grammar. It includes explanations and self-test sections. (Not applicable to Paper 1.) 6. Common Entrance Malvern Guides. These booklets include extensive CE vocabulary and text examples covering the four topic presentations
2 NB. Everybody will be expected to use the present tense (Je joue / il regarde) and the near future (Je vais jouer / on va regarder). Where you feel able, you should use a range of tenses including the past (Je suis allé / J ai mangé Quand j étais jeune je jouais ) and the future (Je regarderai / Il mangera). Don t forget important adverbial expressions: souvent, d habitude, de temps en temps, en générale etc (the most important one scan be found on the Essential Vocabulary sheet. What else to do Practise writing out your presentations accurately (from memory) Listen to some DVDs, that you know well, in French Practise expanding sentences using expressions of time (Essential Vocabulary sheet) Practise using; Je, Il, Elle, Nous, Ils, Elles with the correct verb endings in two or more tenses WINCHESTER COLLEGE ENTRANCE Exam Structure Listening 20 minutes 50 marks Speaking 15 minutes 30 marks Reading 35 minutes 30 marks Writing 35 minutes 100 marks The Speaking exam - Tuesday, 6 th May Role Play Make sure you know the Key Role Play Structures - Page 3 of the Speaking Exam Booklet. Conversation The conversation is based on 10 prompt questions. Content is drawn from the Common Entrance syllabus but the range, accuracy and detail required is far more demanding. Keir should exploit his four presentations as much as possible. The Reading and Writing Exams - Wednesday, 7 th May Reading Section 1: Section 2: Section 3: Writing Part 1a: Part 1b: Part 1c: Part 2: A simple sentence matching task. A detailed reading comprehension. Answers required in French. An extensive and detailed comprehension / time frames. Answers required in English. A series of word gap sentences testing the candidates ability to exploit regular, irregular, reflexive, modal verb structures accurately. A short passage / word gap exercise testing the candidates ability to exploit the perfect and imperfect tense accurately. A short passage / word gap exercise testing the candidates ability to exploit the future tenseaccurately. A detailed text / word gap exercise testing the candidates thinking skills, ability to recognise grammatical concepts and ability to apply language correctly. Part 3: word essay writing task. The task is similar to the Common Entrance 13+ section 2 writing task and tests the candidates ability to write a detailed text, which exploits a range of tenses and idiom accurately.
3 Revision You should exploit your Revision Folder which includes: 3. Speaking Presentations. The four topic presentations provide a good supply of material from which to draw in the speaking exam. Learning the presentations well will also help Keir in the other papers. 4. Speaking Exam Booklet. This includes a question bank which should cover most aspects of the conversation. Extension questions should be particularly well prepared. 5. Vocabulary lists These pages comprise more obscure CE vocab, which could particularly feature in the Reading and Listening exams (Level 2 CE & scholarship only). 6. CE Grammar Revision Booklet 7. Extension Grammar Booklet. Aimed at the Scholars, this booklet comprises past and future tense explanations and Foundation GCSE grammar. The booklet includes explanations and self-test sections. 8. Common Entrance Malvern Guides. These booklets include extensive CE vocabulary and text examples covering the four topic presentations. 9. EXPO GCSE Higher tier Grammar Section page / adjectives, possessive adjectives, modal verbs, negatives, comparative and superlative adjectives, indirect and direct object pronouns, emphatic pronouns, relative pronouns etc. Other things to do: Practise writing out the four presentations accurately (from memory) Listen to some DVDs in French ones that you know well Practise expanding sentences using expressions of time (Page 1 Grammar Booklet) Practise using; Je, Il, Elle, Nous, Ils, Elles with the correct verb endings in two or more tenses Make your sentences interesting, detailed and accurate do not neglect accents. Practise using a full range of tenses, including the future immediate, the future simple, the perfect, the Imperfect, the conditional and the Present (especially irregular verbs).
4 TONBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP Paper 1: This exam is structured as follows: Speaking (25%), Reading (25%), and Writing (50%) 1 hour Content is drawn from the Common Entrance syllabus but the range, accuracy and detail required is far more demanding. The Speaking exam This exam will draw largely on the Common Entrance syllabus and will take the form of a conversation. Topic presentations and the Speaking Exam Booklet are key areas to revise. Reading and Writing Exams Section A: comprises two reading comprehensions with three sections of questioning. The first part requires candidates to translate sentences or short text into French, the second part will demand answers to specific questions in French, and the third part will be a true / false / not mentioned multiple choice. Section B: comprises a word writing task. The task will be drawn from the Common Entrance syllabus. Candidates need to show an excellent grasp of the materials listed below. Paper 2: 30minutes Section A: comprises a translation task from English into French. This may take the form of a series of sentences or a short passage. This task tests the candidate understanding across a range of tenses: present, perfect, plus-perfect, imperfect, future immediate, future, and future conditional. Section B comprises a series of word-gapped sentences. The task is designed to test a candidate understands and expertise in relation to a wide range of grammatical concepts: adjectives, possessive adjectives, modal verbs, negatives, comparative and superlative adjectives, object pronouns.
