5 PREFACE It has been nine years since the first edition of this book was published (I can hardly believe it), and the size of this second edition attests to the great amount of new information I have received during these years from Miller relatives. So much so, in fact, that I have regrettably had to omit from this second edition the Section on the Watauga County Meat Camp Millers which appeared in the first edition and for which I received from that group of descendants (especially John O. Hawkins, Carl Lewis, and James Miller) so much information that it would have taken up over 100 more pages here. So many new friends have provided me with information and I am sure that I will leave out many, but especially wish to thank the following: Mrs. Agnes Whitaker, Mrs. Joanne Weaver, Mrs. Virginia Childers, Mrs. Janice Brown, Mrs. Barbara Dierking, Mrs. Hazel Stanley, Mary Atkinson, Gladys Donoghue, Nancy Verbout, Ola Welch Weaver, Dorothy Cascadden, Floyd Welch, Ruth Bata, Anne Patrick, Thomas Newman, Thelma Meyer, Catherine Hargreaves, Juanita Bledsoe Miller, and so many others. All of those people who provided information for the first edition of this book are again to be thanked: Eleanor Baker Reeves, Matilda Hampton, Ellis Thompson, Lester and Lura Clark, Retha Edmondson, Junior and Ruth Clark, Jim and Blanche Rash, Ruth Clark, Carrie Bare, Vernie and Dare Hart, Elizabeth Stevens Lyle, Ethel Davis Lyle, Rev. and Mrs. A. F. Miller, Rev. Iron Miller, Lizzie Finley Miller, Mayme Miller Sturgill, Reggie and Minnie Miller, Annie Hurley Miller, Billy T. and Ruth Little, Doris Neese, Lola Tribble, Ruth Tribble, Willie and Lessie Ham, Pearl Hensley, Dona Miller, Irene Giraud, Flossie Miller, Mecy Wyatt, Callie Thompson, Flossie Taylor, Nina Blevins, Gladys Davis, Joe and Bertha Miller, Wade Miller, Charl and Nettie Roop, Carolyn Lewis, Alt and Laura Clark, Flora Elliott, Paul and Edra Miller, Matt and Edgar Eldreth, Lois M. Riley, Ora Bowers, Em Johnson, Fanny Eller, Luna Dixon, Alice M. Powers, Ethel Graham, Rev. Dewey Church, Charles and Betty Davis, Marie Turner, Mavis Gochnauer, Patricia Crepps, Judy Greer, Ruby Coleman, Mrs. H. Taft Simmons, Patsy Lanford, Mrs. Gwyn Hartsog, Albert and Eunice Miller, Vista Dollar, Ruth Jones, Eddie Miller, Grace Turner, Lizzie Gilley, Bessie Miller, Myrtle Miller, Judge B. Miller, Maude Evelyn Calhoun, and again, so many others. Since the first edition of this book, my father, Howard Lester Miller, has died, as have so many others I have known and talked with through the years about the Millers. I think my father was proud of this book, and it is to honor his memory and that of all the wonderful Millers that I have tried to document our history as best as I could. I am sure that there are still errors and much more that could be added. But every word of this book was written to show that we are all brothers. There is no place like Ashe County, North Carolina--and nobody like Ashe Countians. NUMBERING SYSTEM Each person in each genealogy has been given an individual number. If a sign appears before the number, the reader is referred to the appearance of that number further in the genealogy where more information is given.
