3 These lessons are made by several students, future teachers, of different countries. We worked together on the topic daily routines and the days of the week. We developed different lessons for children with the age of 4 till 6. This topic is appropriate to become a morning ritual, because is gives the children a survey of what is going to happen on a certain day. This helps a lot of children, for example, children with autism. We hope you like the lessons. Song/video: Wake up! 4 Lesson 1: Vocabulary: The names of the daily routines parts in the day. Personal photos will help to see the differences and similarities between children s personal daily routines. Introduced with daily routines in other cultures Training collecting and splitting skills in math Lesson 2: Introduce children with daily activities. Introduce children with parts of the day (morning, noon, evening, night); Find out differences between the daily activities of an adult and a children. Lesson 3: Repeat the daily routines. The children will learn, practise, mathematics. They will learn, practise, to count 1 till 10. Cognitive skills. The children will practise memory by making a puzzle. Cognitive skills. The children will practise memory by ordering the pictures in the right order, of the day. Lesson 4: Vocabulary: Days of the week in English Training cognitive skills through memorizing activity Mutual conversation skills in target language Improve ability to speak in monologue, dialogue, answer to teacher s questions The children practise the colours of the rainbow Lesson 5: Vocabulary: Days of the week, the routines of the day. The children are getting a daily routine. The children will see the differences and similarities between their routine on Monday and their routine on Sunday and other days of the week. The children practise how to evaluate, to tell the teacher what they have learned. 4

5 Lesson 1: My Daily Routine This activity is important for vocabulary of English language about children s daily routine, social skills, and math/reasoning skills. Introduce each other with personal daily routine, with mornings and evenings rituals. Materials: Song/video: Wake up! Daily routines song for kids Song/video: Sweet dreams (Goodnight song) Photos about daily routines Books, magazines, encyclopaedias, computer Paper Self-adhesive tack Aims: Vocabulary: The names of the daily routines parts in the day. Introduced with daily routines in other cultures Training collecting and splitting skills in math Number of children: The activity can be done with a large group of children. Step 1: Make a pictures of your daily routines The previous day, the teacher has sent a message to the parents that the children need to take photos with their daily routine on mornings and evenings and print out this photo s. For instance, when they weak up, wash their face, when they brush teeth, when they comb their hair, when they dress up when they eat breakfast, when they go to school when they come home from school When they play games or do some hobbies When they eat dinner When they wear their pyjamas When they brush teeth before sleep When they listen some story or fairy tale When they go to sleep 5

6 Step 2: Learning the names of daily routines in English At first, they will listen to the song Wake Up! Daily Routines Song for Kids and sing and dance together. Then they take their pictures and put them on floor in front of them if they are sitting in circle or they can put them on the tables. Then they have to put the pictures in the right order with the teacher while listening to the song again. After that the teacher asks the children to put the pictures in groups of activities. For example, the children put together all the pictures where they are waking up. The Teacher chooses whatever she/he likes and put them on the floor, or makes posters on the wall etc. Then the teacher can show them pictures of daily routines from different countries and cultures. (from books which the children brought, from the computer, magazines, newspapers etc.) They are discussing about similarities and differences between them. The day is over. So the teacher put this song on, sweet dreams (good night) and the children follow the song s lead. They go to sleep and they are thinking about the activities of the day like the little bear was dreaming in the video. They can take a few pillows or a scarf or some teddy bears, which can help to enjoy the song. Step 3: The teachers asks what the children have learned today. The children can make a drawing or something else so they can express their feelings and their knowledge. This is an extra activity. 6

7 Lesson 2: The daily routines Activity: What do we do everyday? Materials: Daily routine cards. Aims: Introduce children with daily activities; Introduce children with parts of the day (morning, noon, evening, night); Find out differences between the daily activities of an adult and a children. Step 1 Ask the children what they still remember of the previous lesson. Ask some children what they did this morning. Step 2 The teacher introduces Tom by showing the daily routine cards. Tom is the same age as the children in the class. After that the teacher will show the children each daily routine card. The teacher will ask the children what they think Tom is doing on this card. Then the teacher will hang the cards with the activities that the children will do today, on the board. This way the children can see the routines of today at the board. The teacher can ask the children several questions about each card. For example: On what time of the day, will we do this activity? What does the Tom do in the picture? Do you also do this activity? Step 3 The teacher asked a parent if he or she could tell the class about his or her day. If there are no parents available, the teacher can tell the children about his or her daily routines. Every adult s routine is different compared to the routines of a child. For example, an adult drinks coffee in the morning, they go to work and they do many other things that children don t do. It can be very interesting for the children to hear a routine of a parent who is a doctor or a policeman or other rare professions. The children can ask some questions to the guest, for example: What do you do at work? How long does it take to get to your work? Do you go to work by car? When do you go to sleep? When do you wake up? Step 4 The teacher asks what they have learned today and how they experienced this day. 7

Step 1: The teacher reminds with simple questions what they did the day before. Do you remember what we did yesterday? What did you like most? Why? Step 2: The teacher reminds them of the song they did in lesson 1. They will sing the song wake up! Step 3: After the children are reminded of the previous activities the teacher proceeds with the main activities. The teacher presents them a new song about the night, 10 in the bed. They sing the song together and they make the gesture of the numbers with their fingers. 8

9 Step 4: The teacher puts the children in a circle so they can make huge puzzle of 10 activities of the day. 1. Wake up 2. Brush your teeth 3. Dress up 4. Eat breakfast 5. Go to kindergarten 6. Kindergarten! 7. Eat lunch 8. Play 9. Eat dinner 10. Sleep The children sit in the circle and try to put the pieces together and in the right order. Step 5: The teachers asks what the children have learned today. Step 6: extra activity: They take down the photos that they hanged in lesson 1. Each child gathers his photos. The teachers has 3 boxes: One for the morning, one for the (after)noon and one for the evening. The children must put the photos in the right box. 9

10 Lesson 4: The days of the week. Materials: - Flash cards coloured in rainbow colours - The big rainbow - Computer for the song/video: Days of the week song 7 days of the week Children s songs by the learning station. - Aims: Vocabulary: Days of the week in English Training cognitive skills through memorizing activity Mutual conversation skills in target language Improve ability to speak in monologue, dialogue, answer to teacher s questions Step 1: Ask the children if they know the days of the week. What day is it today? What days do children already know? Step 2: Children will listen to the song carefully. After this, teacher can sing the song alone with the right pronunciation and when teacher is done with it, than sing it with children. When it is required to sing the song quite, the teacher needs to show that children need to sing the song quite. And when the children need to sing the song loud, the teacher will tell the children that they need to sing it loud. The song is about the names of the days of the week. Step 3: The teacher will tell the children that each colour represents a day of the week. The teacher needs to practise this with the children. The teacher will start with Sunday, which has the red colour. Follow the same rhyme just like in the song. Sunday: red Monday: orange Tuesday: yellow Wednesday: green Thursday: blue Friday: purple Saturday: pink 10

11 Step 4: In this step, the teacher hangs a big rainbow paper on the board. Then the teacher randomly shows them the back of the rainbow cards, which is blank, and the children will try to guess the right day. If they answer correctly the teacher will switch the card and show them the name of the day. After that, the teacher is writing on the rainbow the name of the day in the correct colour. For instance, the teacher chooses the yellow colour randomly, which represents Wednesday. The teacher can ask the pupils: What does that colour represents in the rainbow? The children will say that yellow is Wednesday. The teacher writes Wednesday on the rainbow with the yellow colour. The rainbow hangs on the board so that all the children can see it. Extra activity: Children can make a rainbow and coloured or painted it. 11

12 Lesson 5: Days of the week and the daily routines. Make the days of the week and the daily routines, a morning ritual. Materials: Song/video: Days of the week song 7 days of the week Children s songs by the learning station. Coloured cards of the week. Rainbow Worksheet of a calendar. Coloured pencils. Aims: Vocabulary: Days of the week, the routines of the day. The children are getting a daily routine. The children will see the differences and similarities between their routine on Monday and their routine on Sunday and other days of the week. The children practise how to evaluate, to tell the teacher what they have learned. Step 1: What do the children still remember from the previous lesson? Do they still remember the days of the week? What day is it today? Do you still know which day comes after Monday? Do you still remember which day comes after Friday? Can you name the days of the week in the correct order? Repeat the learned song about the days of the week. (lesson 4) The children will sing the song. The teacher also repeats the coloured cards with the days of the week and reveres to the rainbow. Step 2: The worksheet. The children are going to make a calendar. They use the worksheet. The worksheet has the days of the week and parts of the day. The days have been offered the lesson before this lesson. The parts of the day have been a part of lesson 3, daily routines. The children will fill in the worksheet. They draw pictures of their routines of a certain day. For example: Monday: wake up, brush teeth, breakfast, school, lunch etc. An example of the worksheet is on the next page. Children, who find this worksheet hard, can work in pairs. Step 3: The teacher will evaluate with the children. What have they learned or practised today. Do they still remember all the days correctly? Do they still know all the cards of the school routines? Step 4: You can sing the song about the routines they do at home. (Lesson 1) When some children are already done with the worksheet they can colour the entire worksheet. After that, the children can make a drawing about their routines or they can make a dance/ the movements for the song about the days of the week. 12
