Watch forr another mailing with fair forms for alll areas coming your way soon. Fair entry deadline for Livestock, Horse, Small Animals and Clothing Buymanship/ Fashion Revue project areas is Friday, July 1 this year. 2 Congrats To... Good Hope 4 H Club who won the LDI Video Challenge and $1,000 for their 4 H projects!... Ellis Co. 4 H Scholarship & Development awarded over $3,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors and to campers this year. Congratulations to all recipients! Remember, you will need to share your time during the fair to serve in the Scholarship Foodstand in the Unrein Family Building. Give the Ext. Office a call to schedule your time or go on line to sign up. Thanks. 4 H Livestock Happenings Livestock Deadlines for Kansas State Fair and Kansas Jr. Livestock Show Participation June 15 All Commercial Heifer, Sheep, Swine & Meat Goat nominations for KSF and KJLS are due in Manhattan. Ellis County Spring Livestock Show Thanks to everyone who came out to help out with this year s Spring Livestock Show. Swine Fitting, Showing & Care Clinic We are working on plans to bring a Swine Fitting, Showing and Care clinic to Ellis County on June 14. We will include hands on experiences and the Pork Quality Assurance training that is required to show your swine projects at KSF and KJLS as part of the training. There is a $5 fee to help cover lunch expenses. Please pre register with the Ext. Office by Monday, June 6. Livestock Pre entry for Ellis Co. Fair Pre entry forms, picture forms, insurance forms will be due on July 1st. At this time all animals must be designated to a 4 H ers name. Look for the letter with all of this information and entry forms in it in mid June. Livestock Sale Buyer Tickets If you sold animals in the sale at last year s fair, you will find a pair of tickets in your fair entry packet. These are for you to deliver to an assigned buyer before July 1. The buyers will receive a letter telling them that you will be coming. Be sure you take time to get them delivered and to Thank them for their support! Livestock Project Assistance Stacy Campbell is willing to work with 4 H members who have?s or need guidance in the 4 H livestock projects. Give him a call if you d like to set up an appointment. Don t Forget to De worm Livestock Projects 4 Hers if you haven t done so, I would recommend that you be sure and de worm livestock projects for internal and external parasites. By doing this it can increase animal gains, improve hair coats and make the animals more comfortable. Swine are very prone to lice and may need treated every month, plus their housing area and bedding will need treated as well. If you need further informa on give us a call or your veterinarian. KSF / KJLS NOMINATIONS DUE JUNE 15 Every family wishing to nominate for the Kansas State Fair or Kansas Junior Livestock Show must have a nomination declaration form on file. Nominations for commercial Heifers, Market Swine, Market Lambs, & Meat Goats are due June 15. Remember to have this form along with the actual animal nomination paperwork AND $8.00 per nominated animal. Also, all species must have DNA samples sealed in official DNA envelopes sent to the same location. All forms, including the nomination declaration form can be found on the Youth Livestock website. To learn about taking the dna hair sample check out these video clips. 3 4 H Council is teaming up with the Fairboard to offer an Old Timer Fitting and Showing Contest. If you are a 4 H alum and would like to participate check out the details on the Fairboard website. Cat Proof of Vaccination for County Fair Cats & kittens (over 2 months of age) shown att the Ellis Co. Fair must be current on rabies and distemper vaccinations. Be prepared to provide proof of vaccination at show check in. 4 H HORSE Project July 1 District Horse Show Entries Due on line June 23 KS 4 H Horse Judging Contest Salinaa register by the 15th July 7 District Horse Show Norton ELLIS COUNTY FAIR 2016 is set for July 16 23, The Theme is Heroes in the Heartland. Check the Ellis Co. 4 H website for a final 4 H events schedule for the 2016 Ellis Co. Fair. Ellis County Fair Volunteers Needed We have posted an on line form that you can complete to let us know how you d like to help. Older 4 H ers and interested adults are encouraged to join our team in getting things ready forr this year s Fair. Here s the link to the on line form. Once again, all clubs will be asked to recruit volunteers to help with a variety of jobs at the Fair, as well. Heroes in the Heartland Poster Contest Who s Your Hero?? Create a poster about your hero or heroes and enter a chance to win a prize and have your poster displayed at the fairgrounds during the Ellis Co. Fair. Posters should be no more than 11 X17 in size and flat (nothing sticking up) and include your name and 4 H club. Submit them to the Ellis Co. Extension Officee by July H Fairgrounds PRIDE Projects Theree are several PRIDE projects that your club can be involved in helping too make the Fairgrounds a better place. Spread sand in the Beef Barn Paint the alley ways between the barns and the showring Re stain and repair the old picnic tables at the Foodstand Other ideas? Let us know. Contact the Ext. Office to sign your club up for one of these projects. We d like to have them completed by July 1. Thanks. BBQ Tickets Available for Pick up by Club Reps The Ellis Co. 4 H Council approved the bbq bid and price recommendation at their June meeting. Tickets are available for your club rep to pick up. 4 H Fairbooks The Ellis Co. Fairbook, 4 H & Open Class Divisions are on line at There are a few minor changes to review. The print version of the book is available to clubs at your June meeting. Give the Ext. Office a call if you have?s. NEW in Open Class Barn Quilts What exactly is a Barn Quilt? Come join the fun at the 4-H workshop and paint one for entry into this year s open class division. The winning exhibit will advance to the Kansas State Fair! Bedazzle Your Bra - Decorate a bra and enter it in this new event at the 2016 Ellis County Fair. Bring awarenesss for breast cancerr research and raise money for the Ellis County Cancer Council. Those coming to the fair can vote for their favorite Bedazzled Bra by placing money in the appropriate jar. The decorated bra with the most votes (money collected) will win. Colors of Kansass - Colors of Kansas is a new event in open class photography. The topic selected for the 2016 Colors of Kansas is a Old Barns and Buildings. Pleasee promote the beauty of Kansas by snapping a picture of a Kansass sunsett and enter it in the 2016 Ellis County Fair. Food Judging Schedule
4 This year, you will call the Extension Office to schedule your foods judging appointment. Please call in by Friday, July 1 to select your time to meet with the judge. Fair Supplies Fair entry tags, stall cards, and photo matte board are available for pick up at the Extension Office. Photo Matte Board Photo matte boards are available from the Extension Office for $1.50 per sheet. Rocket Kits for Sale If you re not able to participate in the Rocketry class this summer, you may be interested in purchasing a kit from our office. They range from $7.50 $10 each and are suitable for beginner to intermediate rocketeers. We do have a few rocket engines available for purchase, as well, for a small fee. 4-H Foodstand Updates The inside walls are finished thanks to the Bits N Spurs club PRIDE project. Finishing touches are being put in place now. It will be ready for everyone to come on out and help during the Fair. Foodstand Scheduling This year, every family will be scheduling your own hours at the stand, rather than the club doing this. Watch for a blast with the link to schedule coming your way soon. Please take time to schedule your family for 2 shifts during the week. We would like to have the schedule finalized by July 1. Thanks. Foodstand Training Plan to stop by the Foodstand on the clean up night to go through the brief operations and customer service training for working in the foodstand. More specific times will be available in the Fair Edition of the newsletter. Foodstand Tabs There won t be tabs offered in the Foodstand this year. Instead, you will be able to purchase punch cards ahead of and during the fair. These cards will also be the incentive prize for those getting out and selling 4 H BBQ tickets this year. For every 25 tickets sold, 4 H ers will receive a $10 punch card. Fun at the Fair Tours The 4 H Ambassadors are offering special Fun at the Fair tours on Thursday, July 21, 10 Noon. You will need to register your group for this opportunity by calling Erika at or ing her at elmabby_26@yahoo.com by July 1! Kansas Youth Leadership Forum Presenters Needed The 15th Annual Kansas Youth Leadership Forum is November at Rock Springs. This conference, for year old 4 Hers, will include speakers, workshops, consulting groups and the election of the 2017 Kansas State 4 H Youth Leadership Council. If you would like to join the Ellis Co. 4 H leadership team to plan and present a workshop for KYLF, contact Susan by June 15. Barn Quilt Workshop You don t have to have a barn to create a Barn Quilts. This fun trend is making its way to Ellis County and the Ellis County Fair this summer! We will be holding a workshop to help you create a one of a kind work of art for display at the Fair and on your barn or home. The workshop will take place at the Extension Back Meeting Room on Tuesday, June 21. Please pre register with the Extension Office by Monday, June 13. Bring a sack lunch. Cost of the workshop is $20. You will leave with a 2 X2 completed barn quilt. We will also offer some other fun, hands on learning activities while our paint is drying. Come join the creative fun! 4 H Survey Kansas 4 H is conducting a survey of its members in the next couple of months. The surveys will help us to plan and evaluate programs and to learn what our youth are getting from their 4 H experience. We will be bringing this survey out to 4 H clubs at your May and June meetings. Look forward to spending a few minutes with you, gathering this important information! 4 H KAPs and Member Pin Aps
5 I ve heard several reports of bored 4 H ers and school has only been out a few days!!! One thing you might do to helpp alleviate the boredom is to start working on those 4 H KAPs and Pin Aps. Remember, we are changing the requirementss for Member Pins in All the needed forms are available on the Forms page of our website.
