3 About This Document The purpose of this guide is to assist the user with installing a DVR on the network. There are many network setup scenarios, but this guide will be effective for the majority of small or home office networks. Notes Before Starting Please set your DVR units to its FACTORY DEFAULT settings. This product is only compatible with current versions of the Microsoft Windows OS. Use only the client software to connect to the DVR for troubleshooting purposes. The DVR and PC must be connected to the same device (router, switch, etc.) The PC must be able to access the Internet before starting All tests must take place on site where PC and DVR are installed Use a straight-through network cable for connection to a switch/router/modem, do not use the supplied crossover cable (XO), as this is for direct connection to the PC only. Access your router s STATUS page and ensure you re router s WAN or Internet IP address is not one of the below: x.x 10.x.x.x x.x x.x If your router s WAN or Internet IP address is one of the above, contact your ISP for instructions on how to convert your modem to bridge mode or modem-only mode. Consult your router s documentation on instructions how to determine its WAN or Internet IP address. Network Troubleshooting Guide 3 of 5

4 Product NVS INTRODUCTION INSTALLATION Description Test Setup Setup Please follow the steps below to complete the connection to the DVR. All DVRs require four components to allow network/remote access to function; the four essential settings are listed below: IP Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway Port Number(s) ***Please consult your DVR documentation for instructions on how to edit these DVR settings*** ***All other network settings such as DNS, DDNS, Remote Host IP, etc. are not required and can be ignored*** 1) Issue an IPCONFIG command on the PC i. Click START -> RUN -> Type cmd and click OK to open the Command Prompt window A. At the Command Prompt seen below, type ipconfig and hit enter. This will display the PC s IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway. 2) Enter the PC s Subnet Mask and Default Gateway found from the IPCONFIG command above into the DVR s network setup page (consult DVR documentation). The PC and DVR must have the same identical Subnet Mask and Default Gateway. For example, in the screenshot above you would enter as the DVR s Subnet Mask and as the DVR s Default Gateway. 3) Enter the PC s IP Address into the DVR s IP Address field, except change the last number to.123. For example, in the screenshot above you would enter the DVR IP as Network Troubleshooting Guide 4 of 5

5 4) You should now be able to access the DVR locally at the DVR installation site using the IP address set in the DVR. After the DVR settings have been applied, attempt to connect to the DVR from the PC using the client software (consult DVR documentation on how to configure the client software for DVR access). 5) In order to connect to the DVR remotely or from outside the local network or installation site, you must configure the router for port forwarding. Consult your DVR documentation to determine what ports the DVR uses. Consult your router documentation or go to for information on how to forward ports for your particular router. The list below references the default ports : G4-RTA Series: TCP Ports 80 and 8000 G4-XLA Series: TCP Ports 80 and 8000 G4-M-DVD Series: TCP Ports 80, 7620, 7621, 7622, 7623, 7624 G4-163A and 043A MJPEG: TCP Port 21 G4-X-CD JPEG2000 Series: TCP Port 50,000 G4-760: TCP 80 DVMR Series: TCP Port 8000 Bluenet Video Server: TCP Ports 80 and ) After correctly configuring port forwarding in your router, you can access the DVR remotely, outside of the DVR installation site by using the ISP s static or dynamic IP address. If your ISP has issued you a static IP address, use that to connect to the DVR. If your ISP has issued you a dynamic IP address you must use a DDNS solution. Consult your router and DVR documentation to see if DDNS is supported.
