1 Autumn Semester Courses MASTERS PROGRAM COURSE CONTENTS New Theories in Sociology The aim of this course is to make students familiar with concepts, issues and debates in the field of contemporary social and critical theory.lt will examine key concepts such as difference, objectivity, subjectivity, power, social class, and culture by way of examining major continental critical theories Migration, Culture and Identity The increase in the number of nationalistic and religious movements that are defined as cultural and the mobility of people from different cultures are indicators of the importance of culture. The content of the concepts of culture, border, cultural difference etc. which are of sociological importance, as well as the relation between culture and identity are to be investigated in the context of migration. How and why the Other is being constructed and why migrants are perceived as different, threatening and dangerous are also topics to be illuminated Contemporary Social Problems Course will contain following issues: Definition of the concept of social problem, sociological theories of social problems, relationship between social problems and social structure, social change, research methods related to the analysis of social problems, discussion of the social problems within a local and a global context Scientific Methods The main object of this course to deal with intellectual notions about science, method and scientific method. In addition to discuss positivist paradigm s, post-positivist paradigm s, critical theory s, feminist methodology s and post-modernism s science and method comprehensions with relative approach Sociology of the Body In this course, It is discussed and explained that: What is a body? What are the social forces that shape human bodies and bodily experience? How do these forces vary in different societies and historical periods? Relationship between body and culture, power, health and also gender Seminar To improve the students skills for academic writing and presentation. 1

2 Spring Semester Courses Sociological Methods The main subjects of course are methodological discussion in sociology, Turkish sociology s methodological history, research design, qualitative and quantitative researches, applied and basic research, survey and interview Race and Racism The emergence of the concept of race is to be investigated and theories in this field of study are to be introduced. The conditions which cause racism and concerning concepts like culture, ethnicity, ethnocentrism are to be pointed out. The process of colonialism, modernity and tradition, global processes and local reactions are to be illuminated in the context of the concepts of group, the Other and ethnicity Women's Studies Topics included are: women in the family, politics, economical life, the construction of gender identities, and the meanings attached to masculinity and femininity, and the contextualise of gender differences Media and Popular Culture The main object of this course is that understanding of relationship between society, culture, high culture, popular culture and mass media. In this term it is explained that subculture, everyday life and consumption etc Urban Sociological Researches The researches on urbanization and city, urban gentrification, urban transformation, new urban poverty, urban underclass, gender and city, urban segregation and new urban regions, gecekondu and varoş, social classes and city in Turkey and developed countries will be examined. 2

3 PHD PROGRAM COURSE CONTENTS Autumn Semester Courses Theoretical and Conceptual Analyses in Sociology In this study, it will be researched the relations among the main concepts and the theories of sociology. Positivism, hermeneutic, realism, modernist approach, critical theory will be examined. It will be detailed examined the process of concept formation at the sociology Poverty, Urbanisation and Migration from the Sociological Point of View The course aims at investigating the concepts of poverty, urbanisation and migration within the sociological perspective taking into account their impacts on issues such as health, education, family, crime and the analysis of these relations in macro and micro levels. The course also gives place to the effects of globalization and public politics on poverty, urbanisation and migration. The linkage between the causes of poverty, urbanisation and migration with the socio-cultural structure with its possible solution strategies will also be discussed. Furthermore, similarities and differences regarding poverty, urbanisation and migration in underdeveloped, developing and developed countries and the possible solutions will be examined Society and Politics In this course it is discussed that the interaction and relationship between society and politics; theories about subject; basic concepts of the political sociology like state, government, authority, power, democracy, ideology, political structure, etc Gender and Discrimination in the Context of Masculinity Following the conceptualization of gender, masculinity and discrimination and the consideration of concerning theories, discrimination in the context of masculinity is to be investigated. Setting out at masculinities that are being othered and subordinated in society, the impact of media, religion and migration are to be illuminated and the investigation for solutions in different societies is to be considered following the demonstration of the fact that discrimination which comes into question in the context of women is equally a point at issue against men Cultural Studies In this course it is discussed that what is culture, cultural studies, the definition of ideologies, cultural identities, the practices of everyday life etc These subjects are examined with interdisciplinary perspective. 3

4 Ecological Community Subject Headings: Ecology and sociology relationship and interaction; holistic and live centrist approaches; comparison of ecosystems and social systems; risk society, the critique of consumer society; urban ecology and ecological planning; ecologization process of societies; the ecologization of social institutions and production processes; the ecological footprint, ecotechnologies Turkey is in the accession process of European Union The aim of the course is; considering the possible problems of European integration process, evaluating new perspectives of EU-Turkey relations future and debating current EU policies. The socio-cultural dynamics of EU-Turkey relations will be evaluated from the point of bilateral relations and conditions of European integration process Development of Sociological Thought In Turkey The main object this course is to explain that scientific conversion and transformation in Occidental thought s effects to sociological thought in Turkey and to explain those developmental periods of Turkish sociology Seminar The purpose of this seminar is to help Ph.D. students in writing up their proposals and conducting their research. Spring Semester Courses Socio-Economic Structure of Turkey In this study, it will be examined the structural and historical features of Turkish society from sociological perspective. Internal and external dynamics of our society, its relations with other societies, global changes will be examined. Economic, political, educational, cultural structure, family and social classes in our society will be examined Social Inequalities and Gender This course is intended to provide students with a general understanding of the concepts of social inequality and gender. It additionally discusses the theories of gender with other social differences like race, class and ethnicity. The existence of inequality caused by gender in the fields such as education, health, work and family life will also be examined. Further studies discussed in the course concern questions like how social mechanisms produce new social inequality and how social politics can reduce social inequality. 4

5 Diversity in the Globalizing World The relationship between globalization and diversities and its impact on diversities are to be investigated following the conceptualization of globalization and the consideration of the relevant theories emphasizing especially the cultural dimension of globalization. The developments in the world following the dissolution of the Soviet Union are to be examined in the context of the course and phenomena like micro-nationalism, multiculturalism, the nation-state and identity are to be covered in this context. Further the impact of globalization on national, cultural, religious and sexual identities and its interaction with them are to be discussed on the basis of examples and finally the endeavors to live together in the world with diversities are to be investigated Sociology of Everyday Life The main goal of this course is understanding and explaining the practice of everyday life. In this term it is try to explain that social theory and social construction via micro analysis. In this way, routines of everyday life, relation and communication among small group became subject of sociology Qualitative and Quantitative Research Strategies The main object of this course to deal with positivist and post-positivist paradigm s basic properties, qualitative-quantitative linkage, qualitative-quantitative linkage necessity in sociology, macro-micro analysis, qualitative-quantitative research design, sociological imagination, hermeneutic and rhetoric Socio-cultural Foundations of organizational behavior Organizational behaviour in social sciences disciplines; Organizational behavior in historical perspective (classical, modern and post-modern management paradigms); organizational behaviour in cross cultural context; Cross- national; Cross-cultural organizational behavior research and analysis Media and Society The main aim of this course is to evaluate the role of the media on the social change. In this course, within the framework of the effects paradigm which has concentrated on the political, social, and cultural effects of the media, the major theoretical approaches and researches are to be examined, and the contributions of the critical paradigm are to be discussed. Topics to be covered are: ownership structure of the media; media organizations and professionals; media and ideology; media and representation; media audience; media and technology; and globalization Intercultural Communication Introduction to intercultural communication; communication and intercultural communication; multiculturalism; globalization and intercultural communication; elements 5

6 that prevent intercultural communication; sub-cultures sub-groups; the concept of identity and difference; gender, generation and intercultural communication; cultural icons; cultural hegemony; intercultural communication and non-verbal messages; intercultural communication and culture shock; intercultural communication and media; intercultural communication competence Contemporary Theories of Realism and Social Science This course of one-semester length will focus on a number of contemporary theories of Realism in order to grasp a basic understanding of their arguments and claims developed to conceive true nature of the reality. In a broader context, truth claims of Social Sciences will be analyzed and the question "To what extent Social Science is relevant with regard to concerns od Realism" will be highlighted Seminar The process of report and thesis writing, how to organize the text and the bibliography, how to present papers in conferences. 6
