1 First Grade Back to School Night Welcome Families to Room Two

2 My Goals To develop a love of learning To develop a sense of community and personal responsibility. To foster independent work habits To be curious, critical, and confident. Encourage risk taking and the admission of error as a central part of the learning process The results will be life-long learners with a vision toward the future.

3 Our Special Partnership Keep in touch with me- NO DRAMA or TEARS about assignments, or papers. is the best way to reach me. Read and review all papers and letters that come home in the conduit and special red folder Return all permission slips and other paperwork back to school on a timely basis Provide your child with a quiet place to read and practice math facts Take your child to the library Read with your child-right next to them, on a daily basis for at least 20 minutes Help your child prepare for the school day. Make sure he/she gets at least 9-10 hours of sleep every night. Stay involved in his/her daily life.

5 Sent home every THURSDAY Contains school and classroom communication Red folder: Contains the following week s assignments, phonics readers, and spelling words. (Math pages are optional.) Contains corrected classroom work and assessments PLEASE REVIEW ALL PAPERS CAREFULLY Sign and return both the folder and the conduit to school every Friday

6 Homework Meeting: Tuesday September 15-2:30 Room One In your child s conduit every Thursday in the Red Folder: Phonics Readers with Weekly High Frequency Words Spelling/Catch a Bug word list Math Homework - optional Special projects once a trimester

7 Our Basic Needs: The bathroom and water We encourage our kiddos to use the bathroom BEFORE school, at recess, and at lunchtime. Our kids miss important instructional time when they leave during the school day. But, they are allowed to go to the bathroom if they need to use it. Please send a water bottle in your child s backpack. They like to stay hydrated during the day, and can go outside to get a drink if they need one.

8 University Park Dress Code Please dress your child for the weather-it is often cool in the morning and warmer in the afternoon. Send a jacket or sweater for the morning recess. Students need to wear sturdy shoes and socks that they can participate in active movement. Clogs and crocs are not permitted. Ugg boots and dress shoes are not recommended. No spaghetti straps or halter tops on girls. Shorts are recommended under dresses and skirts for modesty.

9 Birthday Policy Birthdays will be recognized with a special song, sticker, and pencil. Please DO NOT distribute party invitations at school, unless you are inviting the entire class. Students who are not invited to your child s celebration get their feelings hurt. IUSD Nutrition Policy prohibits students from passing out cupcakes or other sweet treats for birthday celebrations.

10 First Grade Math Developing an understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within 20. Developing an understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones.. Develop an understanding of linear measurement and measuring lengths as iterating length units. Reason about attributes of geometric shapes, and compose and decompose geometric shapes. Work towards fluency in addition and subtraction with whole numbers within 10.

11 Mathematical Practices Make sense of problems and persevere when solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure with in problems Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

12 Reading with in the Common Core An additional focus on informational texts (such as Scholastic News and other expository text), An increase in text complexity (length of text and story elements) Think about the author s purpose in writing the text (persuade, inform, entertain) Citing evidence in both text and in writing Develop a mastery of speaking and listening (Book Share and Star of the Week)

13 First Grade Benchmarks for Fluency / Sight Words Fluency Expectations: Students should be able to read first grade level texts smoothly, with minimal errors and with expression By the end of 1 st grade students goal is to read a Level 6 text and answer 5 comprehension questions correctly. Fluency and comprehension is tested at least 3 times per year. The Basic Phonics Skills test assesses students in reading words with increasing phonics based complexity. Students are tested at least three times per year with a final goal of 85 words. Sight Words/ High Frequency Words Your child will have a new list of high frequency words for each week that go with the anthology and decodable text.

14 Writing Writing time every day. Writing projects will be aligned with Common Core 3 types of writing: to inform, to explain, to argue, and to tell a story. During this time we will also be looking for students applying the information that was taught during the grammar and spelling.

15 Spelling First Grade students spelling words will consist of the Catch a Bug High frequency words beginning in October. In November students will additionally have the phonics based lists from our Houghton Mifflin Reading curriculum Spelling tests will have three parts; the list, review words, and dictation sentences. Lists are sent home the prior week in Thursday s Conduit. Pre-tests are sent home every Monday Please help your child prepare for these tests by practicing words and sentences.

21 Special Days Coming Up: Talk Like a Pirate- Friday, September 18 th Halloween Pumpkin Carving and Pumpkin Activities-Friday October 30 th We need 7+ parent helpers to assist in the carving and small pumpkins donated UP Jog-A-Thon- Friday November 6 th - All are welcome to attend. We will need water bottles and popsicles.

22 The STAR of the WEEK Every child is assigned a special week to be the STAR! An opportunity to SHINE, and share special accomplishments, trips, and his/her cultural background with the class PLEASE READ THE LETTER and SCHEDULE attached to your packet.

What is Panther PRIDE Award? Once a trimester we recognize some outstanding students that represent Panther PRIDE!

26 A message sent home that says we have had a good day. Save 20 good notes for a prize from the prize box If your child doesn t get a good note, please ask him/her why!

27 What is Fun Friday? What is Study Hall? Fun Friday is: One half hour at the end of the week that is set aside to reward students who demonstrated PRIDE throughout the week Fun Friday is: a privilege that is earned Study Hall is: a quiet, monitored classroom to provide students with time to catch up with incomplete work, or reflect and write.

28 Parent volunteers Clerical- tear pages, collate, photocopy, cut paper Conduit- file and organize papers and stuff conduits for Thursday s distribution Library Assistant- Accompany class and help students find books to check out (Thursdays at 12:30-1:00) Computer Lab Assistant assist kids with logging in and using software (Thursdays at 1:00-1:30) Music Helper-Accompany class and help music teacher in the MPR (every other Tuesday 10:50-11:30) ROOM PARENT- Assist the teacher with special occasions and events.
