Saint Patrick Church Victor, New York Guidelines for Sacristans Prayer O Lord, you have called me to serve you in the sanctuary of your church. guide my hands and my steps that I may fulfill my duties with grace and devotion. Inspire me to put things in good order that our worship may reflect your holiness. Bless all who minister in our parish, on this altar, all who listen to your Word, all who receive the Holy Sacrament, that we may grow in grace, and become partakers of eternal life, through Jesus Christ, your Son. Amen. Principle Sacristans help prepare the worship space, set in place worship aids, get ready the bread and the wine, and make sure that other liturgical ministries are covered arranges elements necessary for the celebration of the Mass (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 105a). o Sacristans should encourage and invite others in the congregation to fully conscious and active participation in the liturgical celebration (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 14): by assisting at the liturgy, with due training, as lectors, cantors, gift bearers and communion ministers. For the Weekend Liturgies Please arrive at least 30 minutes before Mass. First and last tasks, do offer a prayer. Put on nametag. Prayerfully prepare and order things for the celebration of the Mass. 1

A. Before the Mass Preparation of the Worship Space Lighting: turn on the lights 30 minutes before Mass begins. o Sanctuary lights o Nave lights (in main body of the church) o At least fifteen minutes before Mass, light the two altar candles, if the altar server have not yet done this. Sound System (kept turned on). o Check the microphone on the Ambo (Lectern). o Check the microphone on the Altar. o Set up wireless microphones for the priest, and the deacon, if present. Unlock doors (in case of emergency, people inside the church should be able to get out simply by pushing the doors outwards), o Main church front doors o The two back side doors o And the cry room door Open the windows, as needed o In the Church o In the Cry Room Preparation of the Worship Aids Check the Ordo 1 for the feast, readings, liturgical color. o Set the Sunday Lectionary to the proper readings.! Set the Sunday Lectionary on the Ambo (Lectern). o Set the Roman Missals to the proper prayers, if not yet done by priest.! Set the big Roman Missal on the credence table by the Ambo, and the small Roman Missal on the presider s side table. Check the Lectionary Binder on the Sacristy o for the Lector Notes o for the Prayers of the Faithful! Before Mass, the lectors should place the binder in the ambo shelf after reviewing the notes. Preparation of the Altar Put out Altar cloth according to the proper liturgical color, as needed. If particles of consecrated hosts are found on the Altar, please bring them to the Sacrarium, and dispose them with due care. Preparation of the Wine Set two chalices, plus the presider s chalice on the credence table, with three purificators. Fill one cruet with wine. o Set wine cruet on the table at the back of the Church. 1 A small book that offers guidance on the preparation and the celebration of the Mass. We keep our copy on the Sacristy desk. 2

Fill the other cruet with water. o Set water cruet on the credence table. Preparation of the Bread Insert key to the Tabernacle. [Under no circumstance that the key is left in the Tabernacle when no one is in Church.] o It is desirable that the faithful, just as the priest himself is bound to do, receive communion from the hosts consecrated at the same Mass (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 85). Bring two patens, one being the presider s, and one ciborium, with a pyx for low gluten hosts to the credence table at the back of the church. The ushers put the right amount of hosts in the patens, plus one large hosts in the presider s paten. Preparation of the Lavabo Set a towel and a bowl with water on the credence table. Confirm coverage of liturgical ministers Check the sheet: Introduction before Mass, for the list of weekend ministers. o Lector/s o Altar Servers o Gift Bearers: at least two, please take this as an opportunity to invite parishioners to participate, that is, of course, if no family member related to the mass intention is present. Do avoid the temptation of asking the same people every weekend. o Communion Ministers Be attentive to the Sundays, usually the first and the third, where we have the 10:30 AM Mass as Mass for Children and Youth. You may check with Lori and Nora for coverage. Kindly assist as needed. If the Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated, the Baptism Preparation Team arrive 30 minutes before Mass, to - Light the Paschal Candle. Put out a white towel and set it on the baptismal font. Put out a baptismal candle and set it by the baptismal font. Put out the sacred oils: Oil of Catechumen and Sacred Chrism. Put Reserved signs on the front pews for the family/families. B. During the Mass After Communion Reservation of the Body of Christ. Communion minister brings the unconsumed Body of Christ to the Altar. The deacon, or in his absence, the priest, gathers and collects unconsumed Body of Christ in one ciborium, and reserves them to the Tabernacle. 3

Consuming the Blood of Christ. Unconsumed Blood of Christ may be drunk by the communion minister or may be brought to the Altar for the priest or deacon to consume. The communion ministers bring the chalices, with purificator folded over the chalice (not inside the chalice) to the Sacristy for purification. Purification of the Sacred Vessels. The deacon, or in his absence, the priest, purifies the sacred vessels after the Mass. (Norms for the Distribution of Holy Communion under Both Kinds, 53) C. After the Mass After Care Bring back to the Sacristy o Roman Missal o Sunday Lectionary o Lector Binder o Tabernacle key Turn off lights o Church o Sacristy o Cry Room o Extinguish altar candles Check that all the doors are locked and all windows closed, including the Cry Room. If we are running low on supplies hosts, wine, paper towels, etc., please leave a note for Sue Stehling on the Sacristy desk. Genuflections and Bows (From Some General Norms of the GIRM) 274. A genuflection, made by bending the right knee to the ground, signifies adoration, and therefore it is reserved for the Most Blessed Sacrament, as well as for the Holy Cross from the solemn adoration during the liturgical celebration on Good Friday until the beginning of the Easter Vigil. During Mass, three genuflections are made by the Priest Celebrant: namely, after the elevation of the host, after the elevation of the chalice, and before Communion. Certain specific features to be observed in a concelebrated Mass are noted in their proper place (cf. nos ). If, however, the tabernacle with the Most Blessed Sacrament is situated in the sanctuary, the Priest, the Deacon, and the other ministers genuflect when they approach the altar and when they depart from it, but not during the celebration of Mass itself. Otherwise, all who pass before the Most Blessed Sacrament genuflect, unless they are moving in procession. Ministers carrying the processional cross or candles bow their heads instead of genuflecting. 4

275. A bow signifies reverence and honor shown to the persons themselves or to the signs that represent them. There are two kinds of bow: a bow of the head and a bow of the body. a) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated. b) A bow of the body, that is to say, a profound bow, is made to the altar; during the prayers Munda cor meum (Cleanse my heart) and In spiritu humilitatis (With humble spirit); in the Creed at the words et incarnatus est (and by the Holy Spirit... and became man); in the Roman Canon at the Supplices te rogamus (In humble prayer we ask you, almighty God). The same kind of bow is made by the Deacon when he asks for a blessing before the proclamation of the Gospel. In addition, the Priest bows slightly as he pronounces the words of the Lord at the Consecration. Updated July 13,
