INTRODUCTION This handbook serves as a source of reference and direction for Deacons at a Stational Mass of the Diocesan Bishop at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral. These directives are based on the Ceremonial of Bishops (CB), the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), the Roman Missal (RM) and established diocesan protocol. There is a distinction between Assisting Deacons and Deacons in Attendance. Assisting Deacon assist the Bishop at the Chair and the altar as well as proclaim the Gospel. Attending Deacons are those that are vested and sit together as a group but do not assist the Bishop. This handbook should be reviewed before the Deacon arrives at the Cathedral in order that the majority of his questions can already be answered. The Bishop reserves the right to alter these directives. Thank you for your continued faithful and dedicated service to the Diocese of Toledo. 2 19
Notes Arrival Assisting Deacons should arrive at the Sacristy/Bishop s Chapel at least one half hour before Mass is to begin. This is so any pre-mass tasks can be completed, such as reviewing the Penitential Act, the Prayer of the Faithful, and Communion stations. The Deacons also prepare spiritually for the celebration of Mass by a period of quiet prayer. Pre-pouring of Chalices Trays containing Communion chalices with pre-poured wine will be placed on the credence table before Mass. It is sufficient that water is added only to the chalice used by the main Celebrant 1. Therefore, water need not be poured into the Communion chalices set upon the trays before Mass. Note: The Bishop s chalice will not be pre-poured. The Assisting Deacon prepares the Bishop s chalice at the altar during The Preparation of the Gifts. Vesture Stoles and dalmatics for the Assisting Deacons and Gospel Deacon will be laid out in the Sacristy/Bishop s Chapel. The Deacon is to vest himself and prepare for the celebration of Mass. Three Deacons usually minister at a Stational Mass. They include the: Gospel Deacon Assisting Deacons (2) 1 United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Committee on Divine Worship. NewsLetter. Volume XLVIII, May-June
One of the Assisting Deacons invokes the Penitential Act (if applicable), recites the individual petitions in the Prayer of the Faithful (unless they are chanted by a Cantor), invites the people at the Rite of Peace, prompts the people at a solemn blessing, and dismisses the people following the blessing. The other Assisting Deacon ministers at the altar. Other Deacons present for a Stational Mass are called Attending Deacons (or Deacons in Attendance) and do not assist at the altar. Instead they sit together behind the concelebrating Priests. Order of Procession Prior to the start of Mass, the Master of Ceremony will instruct the ministers to line up for the procession in the following order: Knights of Columbus, if present Thurible and Boat, if used Cross flanked by two acolytes with lighted candles Lectors Gospel Deacon (carrying the Book of the Gospels) Attending Deacons (two by two) Concelebrating Priests (two by two) Assisting Deacons Master of Ceremony Bishop Miter, Book and Crosier Bearers Note: For major diocesan liturgies at the Cathedral the Attending Deacons and concelebrating Priests usually vest in Rosary Cathedral School and are brought to the Cathedral prior to the start of Mass. They will file in order with the liturgical procession in the vestibule. If a large number of clergy are present there may be two processionals/recessionals. One for Attending Deacons and concelebrating Priests and one for the Mass ministers and Bishop(s). 4 Receive, Lord, my entire freedom. Accept the whole of my memory, my intellect and my will. Whatever I have or possess, it was you who gave it to me; I restore it to you in full, and I surrender it completely to the guidance of your will. Give me only love of you together with your grace, and I am rich enough and ask for nothing more. Amen. 5 APPENDIX Epiclesis for Eucharistic Prayers I - IV Eucharistic Prayer I (The Roman Canon) Be pleased, O God, we pray; to bless, acknowledge, and approve this offering in every respect; make it spiritual and acceptable, so that it may become for us the Body and Blood of your most beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Eucharistic Prayer II Make holy, therefore these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Eucharistic Prayer III Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you: by the same Spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries. Eucharistic Prayer IV Therefore, O Lord, we pray: may this same Holy Spirit graciously sanctify these offerings, that they may become the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ for the celebration of this great mystery, which he himself left us as an eternal covenant. THE INTRODUCTORY RITES The Entrance Upon arriving at the first step leading to the sanctuary the Deacons (along with the other liturgical ministers) reverence the altar, in the order they come up, with a profound bow. Attending Deacons then go to the front of the altar (unless directed differently beforehand) two by two and kiss it. Note: The front of the altar is the side closest to the assembly. The back of the altar is where the celebrant stands for The Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Attending Deacons then take their seats. Usually the Attending Deacons sit in the red chairs in the presbyterium closest to the assembly. Attending Deacons will sit in the first few pews at liturgies at which the presbyterium is filled with concelebrating Priests because Priests properly belong in the area named for them (presbyterium). The Gospel Deacon does not reverence the altar with a profound bow (CB, #70). Instead he goes to the back of the altar and places the Book of the Gospels in the book stand. Note: At Rosary Cathedral the Gospel Deacon places the Book of the Gospels in the book stand on the altar. The book stand will be placed on the altar before Mass by the Master of Ceremony or an altar server. After placing the Book of the Gospels on the altar the Gospel Deacon kisses the altar and goes to his seat located in the sanctuary. 16 5
Note: The Gospel Deacon usually sits in the stool off by itself (closest to the Blessed Virgin Mary Shrine). If another Bishop is present for Mass the Gospel Deacon will sit next to him. The two Assisting Deacons enter the sanctuary by stepping onto the first landing and moving off to each side so that the Master of Ceremony and Bishop can come between them. The Master of Ceremony will remove the Bishop s miter and crosier and hand them to the servers carrying them. The Bishop will then make a profound bow to the altar. The Assisting Deacons make this profound bow with him. The Bishop and Assisting Deacons then go to the back of the altar and together they kiss it. Incense If incense is to be used during the Entrance Chant, the altar servers holding the thurible and boat will stand to the side of the altar and wait for the Bishop. After the Bishop kisses the altar, one of the Assisting Deacons takes the boat from the altar server and holds it ready for the Bishop while the thurifer lifts the thurible. The thurifer and one of the Assisting Deacons immediately approach the Bishop. The Bishop places incense in the thurible. After the Bishop finishes placing the incense in the thurible, and silently blesses it, the Assisting Deacon returns the boat back to the altar server. The altar server closes the thurible and the Assisting Deacon takes it from the altar server and hands it to the Bishop, placing the top of the censer chain in the Bishop s left hand and the censer itself in the Bishop s right hand (CB, footnote #74). Both Assisting Deacons step behind the altar while the Bishop begins to incense it. The Assisting Deacons are to walk with the Bishop around the altar as he continues to incense it, the Deacon at his right arm holding his chasuble back away from the thurible. Knights of Columbus, if present Thurible and Boat, if used Cross flanked by two acolytes with lighted candles Lectors Gospel Deacon Attending Deacons (two by two) Concelebrating Priests (two by two) Assisting Deacons Master of Ceremony Bishop Miter, Book and Crosier Bearers All return to the Sacristy/Bishop s Chapel in correct order. The Bishop usually remains by the entrance door to greet the faithful. He will often have an honor guard of Knights of Columbus with him; therefore Assisting Deacons do not remain with him. Upon arriving in the Sacristy/Bishop s Chapel the liturgical ministers will line up and face the crucifix on the Bishop s vesting table. The Bishop, if he returns immediately to the Sacristy/Bishop s Chapel, or the Master of Ceremony, will lead everyone in a profound bow to the crucifix and say, Prosit ( May it be to your benefit ) to which all reply, Pro omnibus et singulis ( for all and for each one ). 6 15
the Assisting Deacons will purify the vessels in the Sacristy/Bishop s Chapel immediately following Mass. THE CONCLUDING RITES Solemn Blessing and Dismissal Following the Prayer after Communion, the Bishop will impart a solemn blessing, unless the rubrics of the day state otherwise. After the Bishop greets the assembly the Assisting Deacon says the invitation, Bow down for the blessing. After the blessing the Assisting Deacon dismisses the assembly using one of the approved formulas. or or or Go forth, the Mass is ended. Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. Go in peace. Note: If Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction follow the Mass the Concluding Rites are omitted. Then the Bishop and Assisting Deacons go to the altar and kiss it. The Gospel Deacon also goes go to the altar to kiss it. The altar servers line up down the main aisle. The Recessional After the Bishop and the ministers bow to the altar all walk out in the following order*: * see Note on page 5 for recessionals After he finishes incensing the altar the Bishop will hand the thurible to the Assisting Deacon who then returns it to the altar server. Then the Bishop and Assisting Deacons go to their places. The Bishop will go to his chair and the Assisting Deacons go to their stools on either side of the Bishop. Note: The Deacon with the speaking parts sits on the side of the Bishop closest to the Master of Ceremony. This is so the Roman Missal and the binder containing the Prayer of the Faithful can be easily brought forth. Penitential Act or the Rite for the Blessing and Sprinkling of Water The Assisting Deacon who will invoke the Penitential Act (if applicable) recites it from the Roman Missal which will be brought forward to him after a moment of silence. Note: The Penitential Act is to be recited or chanted just as it appears in the Roman Missal. See Appendix VI of the Roman Missal for Sample Invocations for the Penitential Act. If the Rite for the Blessing and Sprinkling of Water is indicated, three altar servers will come forward each holding a metal aspergillum and an aspergill. They will stand before the Bishop who blesses the water. The three ministering Deacons assist in the following manner: The Gospel Deacon sprinkles the assembly by going down the side aisle nearest Islington Street. An altar server goes with him holding the aspergillum. The Deacon holds the aspergill. One Assisting Deacon holds the aspergillum and walks with the Bishop as he sprinkles the assembly down both sides of the main aisle. The other Assisting Deacon sprinkles the assembly by going down the side aisle closest to the parking lot. An altar server goes with him holding the aspergillum. The Deacon holds the aspergill. 14 7
When the rite has concluded each aspergillum and aspergill is returned to the altar servers and placed on the credence table. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Proclamation of the Gospel The Gospel procession and the proclamation of the Gospel occur in the following manner: Incense If incense is to be used, the altar servers will bring the thurible and boat to the Bishop and kneel before him. The altar server will hand the boat to an Assisting Deacon who holds it for the Bishop. The thurible is lifted and the Bishop places incense in the thurible and silently blesses it. The boat is then returned to the altar server, the thurible is closed and the altar servers get up and bow to the Bishop and take their places. The thurifer will stand in front of the altar, on the first level of the sanctuary, facing the Bishop and two acolytes, with lighted candles, will stand on each side of the altar and face toward it. The Bishop remains seated and the Gospel Deacon comes forward. He bows profoundly to the Bishop and asks for his blessing (CB, #140), using these words, Your blessing, Father. The Gospel Deacon does not kneel to receive the blessing. The Bishop says the following in a low voice: May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips, that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and well, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The Gospel Deacon signs himself with the Sign of the Cross and replies, Amen. Then the Gospel Deacon stands up and goes to the altar to receive the Book of the Gospels. He raises the Book of the Gospels and follows the thurifer and acolytes to the ambo. After greeting the assembly will then distribute to other Ordinary (Deacons) and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, if they are needed. As the Bishop leaves the altar, the Assisting Deacons and the Gospel Deacon assist with the distribution of vessels to any Ordinary Ministers (Deacons) and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. All then go to their Communion stations. The remaining vessels/items on the altar will be removed by the Masters of Ceremony during Communion. Note: The Master of Ceremony (ordained) will arrange Communion chalices on the altar from which the concelebrants will consume. A lay Master of Ceremony will instruct one of the Assisting Deacons to do so. Each concelebrant will come forward, genuflect, and raise a chalice from which to consume. Then he will pick up a vessel and go to his Communion station. Deacons in Attendance who are distributing Communion will line up two by two in the main aisle as the Bishop consumes from the chalice. After receiving the Host from the Bishop the Attending Deacons approach the altar where they will receive a chalice from one of the Assisting Deacons from which to consume. The Assisting Deacon then hands them a vessel (preferably a chalice) and the Deacons go to their Communion stations. After Communion the Bishop will hand his paten to a Deacon or concelebrant and then go to his chair where he will wash his hands. The Bishop s paten will go with all the other Communion vessels to the area outside the Blessed Sacrament Chapel where the remaining Precious Blood is consumed and all the vessels purified. The Assisting Deacons return to their seats immediately after they take their vessel to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Two Attending Deacons, if present, will be assigned to purify the vessels after Communion. If no Attending Deacons are present 8 13
* see Appendix on page 16 for the epiclesis for Eucharistic Prayers I IV Note: Deacons in Attendance will kneel throughout the entire Eucharistic Prayer along with the assembly. At the end of The Eucharistic Prayer the Bishop will hand the chalice to an Assisting Deacon and then the Bishop will pick up the paten with the large Host. Both will elevate their vessel as the Bishop and concelebrating Bishop(s), if present, and Priests only sing, Through him, and with him, and in him Afterward the Deacon hands the chalice back to the Bishop. The Communion Rite At the Rite of Peace the Assisting Deacon invites the assembly to exchange a sign of peace saying: Let us offer each other the sign of peace. During the Lamb of God an Assisting Deacon takes a paten of Hosts consecrated at this Mass from the altar to the concelebrating Priests (beginning with any concelebrating Bishops, if present). The concelebrating Bishops/Priests will each take a Host. Deacons do not hand the Host to the concelebrants nor say, The Body of Christ. The Deacon then returns the paten to the altar. Note: Unless directed otherwise by the Master of Ceremony the Assisting Deacon does not bring the main ciborium from the tabernacle to the altar because it is the norm to receive the Eucharist consecrated at that particular Mass. After he receives Communion, the Bishop will distribute Hosts to the Assisting Deacons followed by the chalice of Precious Blood. The Bishop (with his hands joined, not extended) the Deacon signs the book with his thumb and, afterwards, himself on his forehead, mouth, and breast (GIRM #175). The assembly is greeted (recited or chanted) using the approved formula: Deacon: People: Deacon: The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to N. He then incenses the Book of the Gospels with a single swing repeated three times (to the middle, to the left and then to the right). The Gospel is proclaimed with hands folded. The Deacon concludes the Gospel with the words: The Gospel of the Lord. The Deacon does not elevate the Book of the Gospels when saying these words nor kiss it himself. Instead he brings the Book of the Gospels to the Bishop at the chair (opened to the passage). The Bishop will kiss the Book of the Gospels and then take it and bless the people with it. All sign themselves with the Sign of the Cross as the Bishop blesses the people. The Bishop will then hand the Book of the Gospels back to the Deacon and proceed to the ambo to deliver his homily (GIRM, #175). The Deacon hands the Book of the Gospels to a Master of Ceremony who places it on the credence table. The Gospel Deacon then returns to his seat. Prayer of the Faithful Note: The Prayer of the Faithful follows the Profession of Faith on Sundays/Solemnities, and follows the homily during a weekday Mass unless a special ritual takes place after the homily. An altar server will hold a binder for the Bishop who introduces the Prayer of the Faithful. The altar server then stands in front of the Assisting 12 9
Deacon who will recite each petition. After the last petition the altar server returns to the Bishop who offers the concluding prayer. Note: The Prayer of the Faithful occurs at the chair. The Deacon will not undertake the role of reciting each petition if they are chanted by a Cantor. THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST The Preparation of the Gifts Immediately following the Prayer of the Faithful the altar servers and Masters of Ceremony will bring the necessary vessels/items to the altar. Note: As the Gift Bearers enter the sanctuary the Assisting Deacons stand. The Bishop remains seated and receives the Gifts and immediately hands them to the Assisting Deacons who will then take them to the altar and place them there. After the Gifts are placed on the altar one of the Assisting Deacons will prepare the Bishop s chalice by filling it with wine and adding a little water while saying the appropriate prayer: By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. Note: The bishop s chalice should be filled half full. The other Assisting Deacon will place the Roman Missal on the Missal stand, that will be brought to the altar, to the left of center and open it to the appointed Prayer Over the Offerings. The Bishop will then come to the altar. One of the Assisting Deacons hands him the paten with the large host. After he finishes raising it in offering the Assisting Deacon hands the chalice to the Bishop. Incense If incense is called for, the altar servers will be in place next to the altar. The same protocol will be followed as during the incensation of the altar during the Entrance Chant. However, after the Bishop incenses the altar he will hand the thurible to one of the Assisting Deacons. Both Assisting Deacons will stand in front of the Bishop, bow to him and then the Deacon with the thurible incenses him with a single swing repeated three times and bows again to the Bishop. Then the Deacon takes the thurible and stands on the main level of the sanctuary, in front of the Bishop s Chair, facing the altar. He bows to the concelebrating Bishop(s), if present, and Priests as well as the Deacons in Attendance and incenses them with a single swing repeated three times (to the center, to the left and then to the right). The clergy are to be incensed as one group. Then the Deacon goes to the front of the altar where he bows to the assembly and incenses them in the same manner. Meanwhile the Bishop washes his hands while the other Assisting Deacon remains in place. After incensing the assembly, the Deacon returns the thurible to the server. Both Deacons stand on either side of the Bishop and slightly behind him while at the altar. The Gospel Deacon remains at his seat. Note: If few concelebrants are present the Assisting Deacon goes to The Eucharistic Prayer them and incenses them collectively at their seats. The Eucharistic Prayer During the Eucharistic Prayer both Assisting Deacons and the Gospel Deacon will kneel from the epiclesis* until the showing of the chalice, if they are physically able to do so (GIRM, #179)
