2 I. PURPOSE To lead the people of Oakdale Park Church in deepening their relationship with Jesus Christ and each other; becoming a multi-cultural congregation; and working with our neighbors to manifest the Kingdom of God in our neighborhood for the sake of the gospel and for the glory of God. II. QUALIFICATION A. A sincere and mature disciple of Jesus Christ as evidenced by a deeply committed life of prayer, biblical study and meditation, confession, empowering of the Holy Spirit, and dependency on God. B. Possessing the spiritual gifts of pastor/shepherd (Eph. 4:11), teaching (1 Cor 12:28, Rom 12:7, Eph 4:11), leading (Rom 12:8), and encouragement/exhortation (Rom 12:8). C. Thorough biblical/theological training, a commitment to biblically-based congregational life and ministry. D. Character, leadership style, and lifestyle as depicted in scripture (1 Timothy 3:2-4; Titus 1:7-9; Matthew 9:36; Acts 20:17-20; Philippians 2:5-8). E. A commitment to the Reformed Confessions, and a willingness to sign the form of subscription of the Christian Reformed Church, and to become ordained as a minister of the Word and sacraments in the CRC. F. A commitment to urban neighborhood-based ministry and the Mission, Vision, and Values of OPC, including a willingness to live within the geographic boundaries of the OPC parish. OPC has a strong preference that the lead pastor live in the OPC parsonage. 2

3 III. RESPONSIBILITIES The lead pastor will be directly responsible for A-C below: A. Preaching. 1. Develop and maintain a consistent schedule of preaching and teaching, dependent on the Holy Spirit, that is rooted in scripture and fulfills the purposes delineated in 2 Timothy 3: Ensure that preaching services are Christ-centered and clearly communicate the gospel. 3. Provide coaching, evaluation and mentoring to other teachers of the Word within the staff and/or congregation as need to ensure consistent, biblically sound, Spirit led instruction to the congregation. B. Leadership and Vision Casting Throughout the past year (Spring 2009 present), under the leadership of the Timothy Team, council and other advisors, OPC has revisited and updated the vision for our congregation and is in the process of drafting new vision and mission statements. The lead pastor must share and ultimately champion the OPC mission and vision by: 1. Challenging the congregation to act in accordance with this vision through biblically sound teaching and instruction. 2. Ensuring that OPC programs and activities are in proper alignment with its mission and vision, and designed to accomplish the assigned ministry outcomes. 3. Empowering and equipping staff and lay leadership to carry out various initiatives designed to further our mission and vision. C. Leader Identification/Investment/Development. 1. Assess the leadership needs of OPC. 2. Mentor and grow leaders of OPC. 3. Identify and cultivate future leaders. 4. Empower lay-leaders to use their gifts within OPC. 5. Ensure that OPC leadership is reflective of the diversity of our neighborhood. 3

4 III. RESPONSIBILITIES Additionally, it is anticipated that the lead pastor will be responsible either directly, or through delegation, for D-F below. D. Worship Leading. 1. Ensure that the worship services of OPC are Christ-centered and Spirit led. 2. Promote a diverse worship experience for the people of OPC. 3. Administer the Sacraments as defined by the Christian Reformed Church. 4. Provide for the cultivation of worship leaders. 5. Ensure that OPC worship services serve as an integral part of an overall plan for outreach and discipleship in the neighborhood and community. E. Staff Supervision. 1. Provide oversight to the activities of OPC ministry staff to ensure consistency with OPC Mission, Vision, and Values. 2. Mentor and grow the ministry skills and gifts of ministry staff. 3. Create accountability for desired ministry outcomes. 4. Ensure adequate and timely planning. F. Adult Education Coordination. 1. Ensure the existence of opportunities for adults to be instructed in the tenets of the Christian faith. 2. Promote programs and activities designed to encourage progress in discipleship by adults. 3. Identify people with gifts in teaching and encourage their use to provide biblical education to adults. 4

5 IV. CHURCH LIFE The Lead Pastor will perform various functions that are part of the ongoing life of the church including the following: A. Serve as a member of the Council. B. Take advantage of the seasons of the Church year as a means of promoting OPC s life in Christ together. C. Teach or supervise the teaching of catechism for young people and new believers. D. Preside over weddings, funerals, and other events essential to the life of OPC. 5
