2 HINDLEY HIGH SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY INTRODUCTION It is our school policy that all our pupils wear school uniform when attending school or when participating in a school-organised event outside normal school hours. There may be occasions when pupils are given permission to attend a school trip out of uniform; this is at the discretion of the head teacher. We provide a complete list of the correct uniform in our school uniform code which appears in our school newsletter, pupil planners and the school website. (See annex 1) AIMS The policy reflects the school s commitment to our uniform and is underpinned by the following principles which promote a positive ethos and environment for our pupils HEALTH AND SAFETY The uniform code promotes pupils health and safety e.g. the school expects that long hair should be safely tied back for activities as appropriate. No jewellery is allowed in school except for a watch. SECURITY The school needs to be able to quickly identify individual pupils in order to maintain good order and identify intruders easily. TEACHING AND LEARNING The teacher must be able to judge pupil s engagement with learning, and to secure their participation in discussions and practical activities without additional distractions from inappropriate uniform. SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE AND ADHERANCE TO THE UNIFORM CODE The school aims to protect young people from external pressure to wear clothing they would not otherwise choose to adopt, protecting them from harassment, and from having to adopt dress codes associated with extreme or anti-social elements in the wider community, including styles and colours of clothing associated with gangs. UNIFORM ETHOS We promote a strong, cohesive, school identity that supports high standards and a sense of community belonging and identity among pupils; if some pupils look very different to their peers, this can inhibit integration, equality and cohesion. We aim to promote harmony between different groups represented in the school. Wearing our uniform with pride expresses the pupils and school s shared values. We want our pupils to have high aspirations and to achieve the highest possible standards of behaviour.

3 COMMON PRACTICAL ISSUES To reflect the principles of our uniform policy, pupils should wear their uniform correctly e.g. ties should be worn at the correct length with an appropriate knot and the school badge clearly visible beneath the knot, shirts must be tucked in. At the discretion of the head teacher there may be circumstances in which the policy is varied to meet the needs of an individual pupil due to religious or medical reasons. SCHOOL UNIFORM The majority of our pupils take great pride in their appearance and make an effort to look smart. If the problem results in an obvious lack of uniform, members of the leadership team will use their discretion as to whether to place your child in the exit room. Appropriate work will be available in the room and HOY will work with you to solve the problems. On occasion a child may be sent away from school if their uniform is not correct and this will be classed as an unauthorised absence. As parents you may from time to time have to consider the purchase of new items of uniform; we would like to take this opportunity to remind you in particular of the following:- Pupils wearing trousers must make sure they are appropriate and suitable for school. They must not be tight, or low slung hipsters, have back zips or buckles and belts; they must be school uniform trousers. All pupils must wear a shirt that has a top button that can be fastened to allow a clip on tie to be worn correctly. should be a sensible style and all black; not black trainers, pumps, boots, sports branded footwear or canvas style trainers. The only jewellery allowed is a watch. You will find a full uniform list overleaf. Unfortunately we have occasions when pupils do not keep to our uniform and we will work with parents to maintain our standards. NON-COMPLIANCE WITH UNIFORM POLICY From time to time problems with uniform arise. A note of explanation from a parent explaining the problem is required. If the problem results in obvious lack of uniform, the leadership team will use their discretion to place the pupil in the exit room. Appropriate work will be available in the room and HOY will work with parents to solve the problem. Persistent non-compliance and defiance of the policy will result in disciplinary procedures which may include exclusion. The response will depend on the circumstances in each case. 5 School Uniform WE ARE A FULLY UNIFORMED SCHOOL AND UNIFORM IS COMPULSORY Top coats Must be an outdoor coat which covers the blazer, is warm and water-repellent. Fleeces, hoodies, cardigans, denim and sports tops are not acceptable. Reflective strips are encouraged. Hairstyles Extreme hairstyles will not be allowed in school. Suitability of hairstyles will be at the headteacher s discretion. Make-up Not to be worn by pupils in school. Mobile phones, electronic devices These must not be brought into school. The school will not accept responsibility for the loss of any mobile phone/electronic devices or earphones which also should not be brought into school. Pupils that bring these items into school will have them confiscated, locked away safely by the assistant headteacher. Arrangements must be made for the parent/carer to collect the items at an appropriate time (these items will not be returned directly to pupils). Bicycle racks for pupils A limited number of bicycle racks are available. However, external property security is never guaranteed, we strongly recommend that pupils fasten their bicycles to the racks provided.
