2 Alabama Chanin Garment Descriptions Following are descriptions of garments and projects offered as DIY Kits. Use this document as a resource to design your own Custom DIY Kit or visit our website to find ready-to-sew kits. Instructions and patterns for each of these garments are available in our Alabama Studio Book Series. Instructions and patterns for garments with an asterisk(*) are also available in Alabama Studio Sewing Patterns. Instructions for the following garments are available in Alabama Stitch Book: Unisex T-Shirt For men and women alike, our classic Unisex T-Shirt has a straight waist and a longer length than a standard t-shirt. Over the years we ve offered this item with various sleeve styles, three of which are available for this kit: sleeveless, short, and long. The top measures approximately 26 from the shoulder and can be shortened or lengthened easily at the bottom edge. Alabama Shawl Our jersey shawl makes a beautifully simple wardrobe statement or a lovely canvas for intricate stitching. This classic shape can be worn year-round, and is perfect for travelers or those always on the go. This generously cut shawl measures 14 x 66 plus fringe. 1

3 Swing Skirt* The A-line Swing Skirt is a great addition to every wardrobe, whether you choose to make a simple, basic version or an elaborately embellished interpretation. Available in three lengths from the waistband to the hem: 21, 24, 28. Corset* This fitted top is designed to show off a woman s best assets and enhance her natural curves. It is cut low in the front, the neckline and armholes are bound, and the back hem (measuring approximately 22 1/2 from the centerback neck) is slightly longer than the front hem. 4 Camisole Top* This top has thin straps, a revealing neckline, and a scooped-out back. It is nipped in at the waist and at the curve of the back to flatter the figure. The fitted bust and waist provide support and the top flares slightly from the waist. Top measures approximately 25 from the shoulder. Camisole Tunic* This tunic has thin straps, a revealing neckline, and a scooped-out back. It is nipped in at the waist and at the curve of the back to flatter the figure. The fitted bust and waist provide support and the six-gore peplum of the tunic flares from the waist to accommodate most hip sizes. Tunic measures approximately 31 from the shoulder. Camisole Dress* This dress has thin straps, a revealing neckline, and a scooped-out back. It is nipped in at the waist and at the curve of the back to flatter the figure. The fitted bust and waist provide support and the six-gore skirt of the dress flares from the waist to accommodate most hip sizes. Dress measures approximately 40 1/2 from the shoulder. Tank Top* This fitted top is designed to show off a woman s best assets and enhance her natural curves. It is fitted in the bust, the neckline and armholes are bound, and the back hem measures approximately 25 from the center back neck. 3

5 Tank Tunic* This tunic has a raised front and back neckline and a 2.75 wide shoulder strap. It is nipped in at the waist and at the curve of the back to flatter the figure. The fitted bust and waist provide support and the six-gore panels flare from the waist. Tunic measures approximately 31 from the shoulder. Tank Dress* This dress has a raised front and back neckline and a 2.75 wide shoulder strap. It is nipped in at the waist and at the curve of the back to flatter the figure. The fitted bust and waist provide support and the six-gore skirt of the dress flares from the waist to accommodate most hip sizes. Dress measures approximately 41 1/2 from the shoulder. Gore Skirt* This six-gore, flared, pull-on skirt sits low on the waist and flares to accommodate most hip sizes. Skirt measures 24 from the waist and has a simple fold-over elastic waistband. Alabama Scarf This winter staple will guard against any chill and it also makes a beautiful gift. A great project for the beginning stitcher and a breeze for the experienced sewer, our Alabama Scarf measures 7 x 38 plus fringe. 4

6 Market Bag Our 100% organic cotton bag measures 12 x 14 and is 2 deep. It is the perfect size for carrying a laptop or your latest sewing project. Fold-Over Elastic We use this fantastic grosgrain binding on the waistbands of all of our pull-on skirts. It is made with a central ridge that is easy to fold over to encase a fabric edge. It is about 7/8 wide (before folding) and thin enough to stitch through. Instructions for the following garments are available in Alabama Studio Sewing + Design: 5

7 T-Shirt Top* This is our classic T-Shirt Top, which we also use for a sleeveless shell. The top has a slightly fitted waist and a longer length than a standard T-shirt. Over the years we ve offered this T-shirt with various sleeve styles, three of which are available for this kit: long and fluted, short, and cap. The top measures about 26 from the shoulder and can be shortened or lengthened easily at the bottom edge. 8 Bolero* The Bolero is our favorite cover-up at Alabama Chanin. It works well with the sleeveless fitted T-Shirt Top, the Fitted Dress, or any sleeveless garment of your choice and can be designed with long and fluted, short, or cap sleeves. 9 Fitted Top* This top has thin straps, a scooped neckline, and a shaped center-front seam to give lift in the bust. It s fitted at the waist and flares slightly from the high hip. The top measures about 24 from the shoulder to the hem. Fitted Tunic* This tunic has thin straps, a scooped neckline, and a shaped center-front seam to give lift in the bust. It s fitted at the waist and flares slightly at the high hip. The tunic measures about 33 from the shoulder to the hem. Short Fitted Dress* This dress has thin straps, a scooped neckline, and a shaped center-front seam to give lift in the bust. It s fitted at the waist and flares slightly at the high hip. The dress measures about 40 from the shoulder to the hem. Long Fitted Dress* This long version of our Fitted Dress is a favorite at Alabama Chanin. It s flattering and comfortable with a clean silhouette and a small train. The dress measures about 55 from the shoulder to the front hem and 61 from the shoulder to the back-train hem, and can be shortened or lengthened easily at the bottom edge. 8

10 Short Skirt* This simple, pull-on Short Skirt is great for just about every occasion, and its small-cut pattern pieces are perfect for elaborate embroidery. The skirt measures about 21 from the waist to the bottom edge. Mid-Length Skirt* This simple, pull-on Mid-Length Skirt is great for just about every occasion, and its smallcut pattern pieces are perfect for elaborate embroidery. The skirt measures about 32 from the waist to the bottom edge. Long Skirt* This Long Skirt with a small train has become a staple in nearly every collection we do at Alabama Chanin. Depending on how it s embellished and accessorized, it can be worn as everything from eveningwear to a beach cover-up. The train on the back of the skirt is 4 longer than the front hem. Skirt measures approximately 40½ from the waist to the front hem and 44½ from the waist to the back-train hem. Fitted Baby Doll Top This top has thin straps, a scooped neckline, and a shaped center-front seam to give lift in the bust. The top is approximately 27 1/2 from shoulder to hem, with the top part being 5 1/2 from the center back and a ruffle that is 15 long. 9

11 Camisole Baby Doll Dress This dress has thin straps, a revealing neckline, and a scooped-out back. It has a ruffle sewn at the bustline. Measures approximately 37 from the shoulder to the bottom of the ruffle border. Poncho (One Size)* This versatile cover-up is just a strategicallysewn rectangular piece of fabric. An Alabama Chanin favorite, we love them in every color and fabric style. Bucket Hat (One Size) Our bucket-style hat measures 8 1/2 across the crown and has a 6 1/4 brim. The Bucket Hat is wonderful on its own, but can also be easily embellished to your liking. Fingerless Gloves (One Size) One of our favorite accessories. Simple to sew up, easy to embellish. 13 1/2 from top to bottom edge. Sized to fit an average woman s hand. 10

12 Tied Wrap (One Size) Adding two ties to a simple rectangle enables it to be transformed when wrapped, and worn like a bolero-style garment that s great both summer and winter, for beachwear and eveningwear. This piece is perfect for heavy embellishment requiring two or more layers of fabric since these embellishments give the piece weight and structure when worn. Cotton Jersey Pulls, or Ropes To make pulls, or ropes, first cut your cotton jersey scraps into strips from 1/2 to 1 wide, cutting the strips with or against the fabric s grain according to which way you want them to curl. After cutting a strip, grab one end with each hand, and pull the strip so that it curls into a rope. Instructions for the following garments are available in Alabama Studio Sewing Patterns: 11

13 A-Line Top* This short version of the A-Line Dress looks great over pants or a skirt and under a cardigan. The top is fitted at the bust with a generous flare to the bottom hem and measures about 25 from the shoulder to the hem. A-Line Tunic* The A-Line Tunic works well with many pieces from an existing wardrobe. Women with great legs like to wear this as a mini-dress; it can also be paired with a straight skirt and heels for days in the office or nights out. The tunic measures approximately 29 from the shoulder to the hem. A-Line Dress* The dress has become an Alabama Chanin classic since it is so versatile and fits a wide variety of body shapes. The dress measures approximately 39 from the shoulder to the hem. Long A-Line Dress* This long version of our A-Line Dress is great as a summer caftan in a single layer of our mediumweight cotton-jersey fabric or as the basis of a heavily embroidered evening dress in a double layer of our medium-weight fabric. The dress measures approximately 55 from the shoulder to the hem. 12

14 Classic Cardigan* This cardigan is extremely versatile and can be used for everything from a bridal accessory to a suit jacket when paired with one of our wrap skirts. It measures approximately 19 from the shoulder to the hem. Classic Jacket* At a mid-length, this garment is sure to become one of your favorite all-around everyday jackets. This version measures approximately 23 from the shoulder to the hem. Classic Coat* This classic shape makes a great year-round garment in its most basic version and can become a coveted statement piece with the addition of intricate embellishments. The coat measures approximately 37 from the shoulder to the hem. Short Wrap Skirt* This short wrap-style skirt makes a great yearround garment; pair a basic version with a simple T-shirt, or add intricate embellishments to make a bolder fashion statement. This skirt measures approximately 21 from the waist to the hem. 13

15 Classic Wrap Skirt* This garment is destined to become one of your favorite all-around, everyday skirts. Add patch pockets to the sides, and it becomes even harder-working. This classic version measures approximately 26 from the waist to the hem. Long Wrap Skirt* This skirt is extremely versatile and can be the basis of a bridal ensemble in white or the perfect beach cover-up in your favorite summer color. The skirt measures approximately 38 from the waist to the hem. The following garments and projects have special instructions: Natalie s Apron (One Size) This one-size-fits-most apron has princess seams and an optional pocket for storage. The apron measures approximately 37 1/2 from the center front to the bottom hem and can be shortened or lengthened easily at the bottom edge. Visit the Journal for instructions. The Factory Dress A favorite among our team at Alabama Chanin (and also our uniform ), The Factory Dress features a high neckine and princess seams. It is fitted at the bust and flares to the bottom edge. Follow instructions for our Tank Dress in Alabama Studio Style. 14

16 Sample Block Finished Size: 10 x 16. As seen in our 2014 and 2015 Swatch of the Month Club, this sample block can be used for small projects, like a clutch or book cover. Visit our Journal for project instructions and ideas. Throw Finished size: 36 x 48. Wrap up and stay warm or display and enjoy the beautiful work on your bed or couch. Follow embroidery instructions of your choice. Blanket stitch instructions available in Alabama Studio Style. Journal Cover Finished size: 9 x 18. As with all of our kits, the Journal Kit includes two layers of organic medium-weight cotton jersey. Kit also includes a Moleskine Journal. Instructions available in Alabama Stitch Book. Finding Your Size When it comes to picking a pattern size, everyone has a personal preference. At Alabama Chanin, we recommend a slightly snug fit to start because, over the course of several wearings and washings, a cotton-jersey garment relaxes and begins to take on your body s shape. We make an exception for projects that are heavily embellished with decorative stitching and beading since the embellishment tends to limit the cotton jersey s ability to stretch. In this case, we suggest choosing one pattern size larger than your regular size. Whatever your fit preference, look at the size chart below to see our measurements for each pattern size.
