3 ABOUT THE SCAVENGER HUNT Teens for a Cure is introducing a new full-filled event Search for the Cure A Scavenger Hunt. Open to teens between the ages of 12 and 17, the scavenger hunt will take place in Midtown Manhattan in the area near Grand Central Station. The hunt will take place from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 23, 2011, starting at the MetLife Building, 200 Park 45th Street. In addition to the professionally organized scavenger hunt, the afternoon will include additional activities encouraging participants to get involved in the fight against breast cancer and informing them about ways they can help achieve a world without breast cancer. Teens attending are being encouraged to raise a minimum $250 to help Komen Greater NYC provide increased funding for community-based breast health education, screening and treatment programs. These are difficult times. Many people do not have access to breast health education and services, because of layoffs and unemployment, reductions of government funding and inadequate or lack of health insurance. A donation of $250 goes a very long way. It will pay for one of these important services: A full clinical breast exam, including a mammogram Two mammograms Breast health educational material Hot, nutritious meals for women with breast cancer and their children Patient navigation services for women with abnormal mammograms Legal assistance for women with breast cancer 3
4 ABOUT Tickled Pink! is a fantastic family-friendly evening, which combines fashion, food, fun, shopping and breast cancer awareness. Its centerpiece is a fashion show featuring professional models and breast cancer survivors modeling the latest designer fashions. The event is hosted by Teens for the Cure, a passionate group of young women and men who have joined together in the fight against breast cancer. While attending school in the greater New York City area, these busy teens and pre-teens take the time to meet and work together to organize Tickled Pink!, which empowers and educates today s youth about breast cancer and raises funds to support the work of the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The group and Tickled Pink! were created by former Komen Greater NYC Board member and breast cancer survivor, Iris Dankner, and her daughter Nikki. Some Tickled Pink! facts: The eighth annual Tickled Pink! will take place in spring 2012 at a location to be determined. Since its inception, Tickled Pink! has raised over $885,000 to help underwrite the programs of Komen Greater NYC. Last year s event was the largest ever with over 500 teens and their families filling the Marquee nightspot on Tenth Avenue Tickled Pink! emcees included television personality and chairman of Deutsch Inc., Donny Deutsch, and LX New York co-host Sara Gore. Singer/songwriter Matisse was on hand to perform and DJ Kisss kept the music going for dancing until the lights were dimmed Pink Diamond Sponsors were Diane von Furstenberg and exhale MindBodySpa. Tickets for the 2012 will be available in the Spring on the Komen Greaterr NYC website (link to / For more information, please visit or contact CURE. 4
5 ABOUT THE GREATER NEW YORK CITY AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE The Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded in 1990 by friends of the late television journalist Benita Feurey friends committed to keeping her memory alive by providing breast health education, screening, treatment, and other services to underserved and uninsured individuals in the five boroughs of New York City, on Long Island, and in Westchester and Rockland Counties. Komen Greater NYC is the #1 Affiliate out of 125 in fundraising and grants awarded. Komen Greater NYC is one of the nation s largest Komen affiliates. Since its inception, Komen Greater NYC has raised nearly $60 million to-date. Seventy-five percent of net monies raised supports local community-based breast health programs; twenty-five percent goes to national research to find the cures. In 2011, Komen Greater NYC is awarding a record-breaking $4.8 million in grants: $2.9 million supports 36 community-based breast health programs, providing educational outreach, screening coordination, support and treatment services to underserved populations in the New York metropolitan area $400,000 supports clinical trials enrollment at three hospitals, increasing the capacity of local researchers to enroll women in breast cancer clinical trials. $40,000 in grants for local breast cancer conferences and education programs. $1.5 million for national peer-reviewed research. Komen Greater NYC is different from other breast cancer organizations because it has a powerful local community focus and ties to many grassroots organizations. Our service area encompasses 12 million people one of the most ethnically, culturally and economically diverse populations in the country including New York City, Long Island and Westchester and Rockland Counties. New York State has the 10th highest incidence of breast cancer deaths among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. 8 FUNDRAISING TIPS Remind your team members of the importance of fundraising encourage team members to contact their friends, family, Facebook friends and Twitter followers to get donations. Many of you are first-time fundraisers. Don t worry. It s easy. Many teens and adults know people whose lives have been affected by breast cancer. You ll be amazed how happy people will be to support Komen Greater NYC s vision of a world without breast cancer. Here are some tips to help you with your fundraising: Start asking for pledges now. October isn t very far away. Set a goal and let people know what it is. A good minimum is $250 but more is better! Let everyone know how cool the Scavenger Hunt is and how donation will contribute to saving lives. Learn about Komen Greater NYC and where the money goes at Remember to thank everyone who helps you reach your goal. Let them know they re making a difference. 11 SAMPLE FUNDRAISING MESSAGES Join the Fight to End Breast Cancer Hi: I m attending a really cool event the Tickled Pink! Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, October 23rd sponsored by Teens for the Cure. The scavenger hunt will be raising money for a great organization, Komen Greater NYC, and increasing awareness of tweens and teens about breast cancer. Can you please make a donation in my name? I bet you know someone in your family, at school or a friend s family who has had the disease. Did you know that there are lots of women in the New York City area who don t have doctors and can t pay for their medical care? Many don t know about breast health and don t get a yearly mammogram. This is really important because early detection of breast cancer saves lives. I m trying to raise $xxx. That money will help Komen Greater NYC pay for breast exams, breast health education, meals for women with breast cancer and their kids, and legal help for women with breast cancer. Please help me save lives by making an online donation on the Komen Greater NYC website. Just go to and click Donate. Or, if you prefer to send a check, mail it to Komen Greater NYC Tickled Pink! Scavenger Hunt P.O. Box 27963, GPO New York, NY Make sure you put my name on the line on the bottom left, so I get credit for your donation. Thanks! Your donation is a big step in creating a world without breast cancer! 11
