4 BUILDING YOUR TEAM FUN WITH FACEBOOK One of the best ways to make an impact on Race Day is to have the biggest and boldest team possible! Your first step is to spread the word and invite everyone you know to jump on board. Follow the steps below to build your team. Facebook can be a very powerful tool for both fundraising and teambuilding. Last year, Race participants raised over $20,000 in donations through the Facebook app alone. Here are some quick tips to help you get started! Team captains must register to start the team. First, think of a team name, then go to KomenDCRacefortheCure.org > Register, then select the Start a Team option and follow the instructions. Once you start the team, contact prospective team members and invite them to join your team. Team members will register and pay individually. Make sure they know the name of your team. If they register online, they should select the Join a Team option and search for your team name. If someone is already registered as an individual and would like to join your team, tell them to log in to their Participant Center. In the actions on the right side (pink boxes), select Change Team Membership under Participant Center Home. Select Join a team and enter a team name or captain name and click Search. Scroll down to view the results and select the team to join. Click the green Join Team button. On the next screen, click the Confirm team membership button. Get the Facebook Fundraising app for the 2016 Race. This app installs on your Facebook page and allows your Facebook friends to donate directly to you. You ll find a link to the app in your Participant Center at KomenDCRacefortheCure.org. Post fundraising and recruitment messages in your news feed. For example: My fundraising goal for the Komen Washington, D.C. Race for the Cure is $1,000. If each of my Facebook friends donates just $10, I ll reach my goal! Will you help me? Make your donation now at [personal fundraising web address]. Thank you! [Team name] is getting ready for the Komen Washington, D.C. Race for the Cure on May 7! Visit KomenDCRacefortheCure.org to register and join us! Visit KomenDCRacefortheCure.org > Fundraising > Fundraising Resources for more sample messages. Thank your donors by tagging them in a post. This will make them feel appreciated and encourage others to give! I could not do what I do to fundraise for the Race if it wasn t for Facebook. Facebook is key being able to have a completely virtual fundraising effort has been critical. Kathy, Race participant who has raised over $23,000 with the help of Facebook Don t forget to like the Komen Washington, D.C. Race for the Cure at and post on our wall to update us on your progress! 4 SUSAN G. KOMEN WASHINGTON, D.C. RACE FOR THE CURE

5 FUNDRAISING WITH YOUR TEAM As the leader of your team, and therefore a leader in the fight to end breast cancer, it s important for you to know and share with your team members the importance of fundraising. Registering and showing up on Race Day will raise awareness, but it s the fundraising dollars that will help find the cures. Those dollars will fund education, screening and treatment programs for women right here in the National Capital Region. Keep your eye on your competition! Check out the Top 10 fundraising teams. With a little time, effort and camaraderie, your team can join this list! Go to KomenDCRacefortheCure.org > Teams > Top Teams. Five Simple Steps to Planning a Team Fundraiser 1 Choose a fundraising activity or party that will be fun for your team. We ve seen teams hold movie nights, barbecues, bake sales, dinner parties, benefit nights at restaurants and bars the possibilities are endless! 2 Pick a date and venue for your event. Host it at a home, community center, conference room, local restaurant, etc. 3 Make your guest list and send out invitations. Invite as many people as possible. Don t forget to send out a reminder or note right before your event. 4 Get your materials ready. Make plenty of copies of the registration form and a team donation form so anyone who is interested can sign up or donate on the spot. Don t forget to provide plenty of pens! 5 Prepare for the party including food and entertainment! Keep it simple. A few snacks and some fun music can do the trick. For more tips on hosting a team fundraiser, check out How to Host a Fundraising Party at KomenDCRacefortheCure.org > Teams > Team Resources TEAM CAPTAIN GUIDE 5

6 THE MONEY MAKES THE DIFFERENCE Susan G. Komen is attacking breast cancer on all fronts: research, treatment and screening services, education and advocacy. We need your team s fundraising support to bring us one step closer to a world without breast cancer. And because Washington, D.C. has the highest breast cancer incidence and mortality rate in the nation, we need to raise funds that will be put to work right here. The good news is that our Race participants are anything but average. Last year, with the help of our extraordinary Race teams, we raised nearly $1.5 million. It s outstanding fundraising from teams like yours that is directly impacting the lives of women in the National Capital Region. In the past 25 years, Komen has provided more than $35 million and funded more than 300 community grants to reach low-income, minority and uninsured women who fall through the healthcare gaps in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. Komen-funded programs in Washington, D.C. include: Health Services - Mammograms, prosthetics and surgeries Treatment Assistance - Insurance co-pays, transportation, translators, meals, psychosocial support Education - Cultural sensitivity training, targeted awareness messages, community-wide education outreach programs Past recipients of this funding include local organizations such as: Arlington Free Clinic Georgetown University Providence Health Foundation Washington Cancer Institute Capital Breast Care Center Holy Cross Hospital Alexandria Neighborhood Health Services DC Cancer Consortium CASA de Maryland Prevent Cancer Foundation Without the fundraising efforts by Race teams, all of the above would not be possible. Breast health services would go unfunded and lives of women in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area would be at even greater risk. Though breast cancer incidence and mortality rates in Washington, D.C. have been steadily decreasing since 2006, these rates are still higher than the national average. So, as you can see, even with all of this progress, the needs are still profound. And because Washington, D.C. has the highest breast cancer incidence and mortality rate in the nation, we need to raise funds that will be put to work right here. In 2016, we hope to make an even greater impact but we need your help to achieve this! As a team captain, we rely on you to lead your teammates toward fundraising success. And you can do this confidently, knowing that the funds you raise are making a difference in the lives of so many in your own community. Please share this information with your teammates and donors so they understand the significant impact that their donations make in the fight to end breast cancer. Visit KomenDCRacefortheCure.org > About the Event > Why We Race for more information on how the funds you raise are making an impact. 6 SUSAN G. KOMEN WASHINGTON, D.C. RACE FOR THE CURE
