Laudon, Essentials of Management Information Systems, 11 th Edition. Pearson, 2014, ISBN Students are responsible for all the material in the textbook, whether discussed in class or not. Bring the text book to every class. Course Outcomes a) Explain the strategic role of information systems in organizations and how IS enhances competitive position; IS planning goals and processes; and the role of outsourcing b) Explain information systems development and organizational process redesign c) Discuss how general systems theory is applicable to the analysis and development of an information system; discuss and explain systems components and relationships d) Describe the classifications of information systems, e.g., Transaction Processing Systems (TPS), Decision Support Systems (DSS), Executive Support Systems (ESS), Enterprise Information Systems (EIS), Expert Systems (ES), Knowledge Management Systems (KMS), Work Flow Systems e) Explain the elements and functional relationships of major hardware, software, and communications elements of information systems consisting of single PCs, LANs, WANs, security issues, privacy and identity theft. f) Use professional code of ethics to evaluate specific IS actions g) Describe ethical and legal issues; discuss and explain ethical considerations of software usage, sales, distribution, operation and maintenance
2 h) Demonstrate the ability to research and explain concepts in an effective reporting manner Course Description from the CS Department Handbook Introduces the use of information systems and information technology in organizations. Considers concepts of information management, systems theory, quality, enhanced decision making, and added value in products and services. Stresses information technology, including computing and telecommunications systems. Teaches students to analyze requirements, define an information system, and develop custom solutions to enhance productivity (3 credits) Term Project: Groups of 3 4 students will carry out an Information Systems analysis and development term project that will be due at the end of the semester. In addition to a written deliverable, each group will also be required to present their project in oral form to the rest of the class. Quizzes: There will be a number of quizzes; quiz number matches chapter numbers. Quizzes may be completed at any time prior to the time indicated on the schedule. These quizzes will be completed using the ANGEL system. Once a quiz is begun it cannot be saved or stopped. Each quiz is 30 multiple choice questions and has a strict one hour time limit. Quizzes will present one question at a time to the student. Once a question is answered there is no ability to go back to that question. The quizzes should be scored immediately. Quizzes not complete on time receive a grade of zero. Homework & In-class work: Often homework or in-class work will be assigned. Some work will be done as a member of a group and other assignments will be completed individually. Occasionally, the class will be divided into groups of 2 or 3. Assignments are valued at 10 points each, unless otherwise noted on the schedule below or notice is given in class. This work is intended to reinforce the concepts discussed in the text and in class. In some cases, groups may be called upon to present their solution. Presentations may be either to the class or to the professor only, depending on the assignment. This work is graded. Late work is not accepted. During group presentations, only those group members that present will receive credit. Exams and Grading: There is also a closed book, closed notes mid-term and final. There are no make-up exams. Missed exams receive a grade of 0.
3 Workload Homework & in-class work 15% of total grade Quizzes 15% of total grade Term Project 20 % of total grade Mid-term Examination 25% of total grade Final Examination 25% of total grade Grading Policy A >= 90%, A- >= 87% but <90% B+ >= 83% but <87%, B>= 80% but <83%, B- > = 77% but <80% C+ >= 73% but <77%, C>= 70% but <73%, C- >= 67% but <70% D+ >= 63% but <67%, D>= 60% but <63%, D- >= 57% but <60% E <57% Policy on Assignments and Academic Integrity All individual assignments are to be completed on an individual basis, i.e., on your own. Group efforts are not acceptable. Late assignments will be accepted for 4 days beyond the deadline with a penalty of 10% per day (including weekends and other holidays). If you have problems meeting the deadlines, you are encouraged to consult me at my office. Being absent from class for one reason or another is not an excuse for submitting assignments late. In such cases, contact me or type the assignment and submit it through electronic mail ( ). When acts of academic dishonesties occur, college policies and procedures will be followed, often leading to severe penalties. Policy on Attendance and Conduct in Classroom Faculty Senate legislation mandates student attendance in all classes. Students who are unable to attend the examinations or meet deadlines for assignments on particular days due to religious beliefs, must contact me ahead and work out alternate arrangements. Students are expected to behave as reasonable adults, motivated to explore the subject matter with proper guidance from the instructor. Late arrivals and early departures, disturb the entire class and should be avoided. As per Senate policy, students whose unexcused absences exceed 15 percent of the scheduled classes and laboratories may receive a lowered grade or failure at my discretion.
4 Role of the Instructor The instructor is your teacher, supervisor, guide, motivator, and colleague in learning. She has actually developed systems for a living in a prior life, and she stays in contact with people who continue to do so. However, she does not know everything and is not ashamed to say so. If we view our model for this course as an apprenticeship, then everyone learns from everyone else. Each of us knows something that another person does not know, and the best thing about knowledge is that you can give it away while still retaining it yourself. One of the instructor s most important tasks is to make sure we all share and use our knowledge effectively. Another task is to get everyone involved to communicate a sense of excitement about the tremendous importance of information systems in the organizations of today and tomorrow. Your Role All these other components come down to one thing and that is you. If you do not invest yourself in what we are doing, then we all lose. You must be present not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally. The meaning of being present physically is obvious. Being present mentally means being prepared for every class meeting. Being present emotionally means caring about what you do and showing it in your work. One of the most common complaints from recruiters is that they simply cannot find enough people of quality. People of quality are people who care about what they do who do their best work with the best tools available and put a piece of themselves into everything they do. So there is your challenge to work together, learn something, and have fun doing it! Disability Statement Students with documented disabilities may be entitled to specific accommodations. 5 Evacuation Policy All fire alarms, emergency voice notification system messages, etc., are to be taken seriously, especially in this time of heightened security awareness and the potential need to evacuate a building for other reasons such as an emergency response to a spill or other event. Evacuation of the facility is mandatory until the signal to reenter has been given by the Brockport Fire Department, University Police, or Environmental Health and Safety personnel. Weather Conditions and Class Cancellations I have no authority to cancel classes, no matter what the weather condition is. Only the President of the College makes that decision. On days of severe weather conditions, please listen to WBSU (89.9 FM) and WHAM (1180 AM) for class cancellations. You may also call 395- COLD at the College.
