1 Instructor (s): John Leonard Course Title: Monuments Series: Archaeology of Ancient Athens Course Code: IGMM CSAR 301S Subject: Classical Studies, Archaeology, History, Art History Credits: 3 Semester/Term: Spring Fall Summer Course Description: Students will be taught Greek and Roman archaeology and art history with a specific concentration on the unique archaeological sites and artifacts preserved in Athens--the cultural center of ancient Greek civilization. The course covers the growth of Athens from the late 2 nd millennium BC to the 5 th /6 th Century A.D., from the Late Bronze Age Mycenaean fortification of the Acropolis through the early Byzantine era when Athens became a Christian city. Particular emphasis is placed on the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods (6 th 2 nd Centuries B.C.). Major themes for the course include the development of democracy, philosophy, drama, architecture, and art; the influence of Athens and Sparta on Greek affairs; Greek religion and the roles of sanctuaries; and daily life in ancient Athens. Following an orientation to Greek and particularly Athenian history--which focuses on the rise of city-states, democracy, and imperialism--students will be introduced firsthand through on-site and classroom presentations to the archaeological and artistic evidence for ancient Greek civilization preserved in and around Athens. On-site classes will be conducted in the archaeological sites and museums of Athens--the Acropolis, New Acropolis Museum; Athenian Agora, National Archaeological Museum; Theater of Dionysus, Temple of Olympeion Zeus, and the monuments of Roman Athens. Excursions outside Athens will include Eleusis, Delphi, Corinth, and a sunset visit to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. Arcadia University The College of Global Studies 1
