1 Auburn University Intramural Sports Soccer Rules The Federation of International Football Associations lays down 17 laws for the game of soccer. These rules contain those laws, modified for Auburn University Intramural Soccer, as well as an 18 th law dealing with participant behavior. LAW I: The Field A. Dimensions: Length: 85 yards, Width: 60 yards B. Goals: 24 x 8 x 10 C. The goal line shall be the line between the corner posts on which the goal is centered. D. The touchline shall be the line between the corner posts perpendicular to the goal line. LAW II: The Ball The ball should be made of leather or other approved material. Its size should not exceed 28 inches or weigh more than 16 ounces at the beginning of the game. The ball cannot be changed during a game without the referee s permission. The game ball will be a standard size 5 soccer ball as supplied by either the Intramural Department or the teams participating. LAW III: Number of players A. Number of players on the field: six (6) players are needed to start the game. No more than seven (7) can be on the field. The goalkeeper counts as one of the players. B. Substitutions: 1. Prior to throw-in for your team 2. Prior to a goal kick by either team 3. After a goal by either team 4. After an injury by either team 5. At halftime LAW IV: Equipment Commercially sold shin guards are mandatory! Shin guards shall be covered by the player s socks. Players shall not wear anything considered dangerous by the referee (i.e. watch, bracelet, jacket with open zippers, rings, earrings or hair devices that have sharp points.) Shoes should be tennis shoes, soft molded cleats or approved soccer shoes. Team members shall wear like-colored shirts, except for the goalkeeper.

2 LAW V: Referees Referees will be provided by the Intramural Department. The referee acts as timekeeper and scorekeeper; inspects the ball and equipment at the beginning of the game; administers penalties and cautions/ejects players for misconduct; stops game for injury and restarts when ready; and ends game because of inclement weather, spectator interference etc. The referee s decisions on points of fact connected to the game are final. LAW VI: Linesmen Each team shall aid the referee in signaling when the ball is out of play by providing one club linesman. The referee will determine who last touched the ball. LAW VII: Duration of the game The game shall consist of two (2) 25-minute halves, running clock. There will be a five-minute halftime period. Any game that is called because of weather will be considered complete if it has reached halftime. If the called game has not reached halftime then it is considered a no contest. LAW VIII: Start of play A kickoff is used to start play at the beginning of the game, after a goal and after halftime. The ball is placed on the center spot, and the kicker must send it into the opponent s half of the field, and no opposing player may be within the center circle. The ball is in play after it has traveled the distance of its own circumference. The kicker may not play the ball again until another player has touched it. A place kick is an indirect kick (See LAW XIII). The toss of a coin determines which team gets to decide whether to kick off first or to have its choice of ends at the beginning of the game. After a team scores a goal, the other team kicks off. Following halftime, ends are changed and the team that did not kick off to start the game makes the kickoff. When restarting play from causes other than those just mentioned, or those mentioned elsewhere in the laws, and providing the ball has not passed over the touchline or goal line, the referee drops the ball at the place where it was when play was suspended, and is in play when it touches the ground. LAW IX: Ball in and out of play The ball is out of play when it has wholly crossed the goal line or touchline, whether on the ground or in the air, and when the game has been stopped by the referee. The ball is in play at all other times,

3 including when it rebounds from goalposts and off officials who are on the field of play. LAW X: Method of scoring/mercy rule The ball passed over the goal line, between the goalposts and under the crossbar, providing it has not been thrown, carried, or propelled by hand or arm by a player of the attacking side. The team scoring the most goals wins. If no goals are scored or if each team scores an equal amount of goals, a three person shoot-out shall take place. If the game is still tied, it will continue with a one person goal-to-goal shoot-out until a winner is declared. Mercy rule will be in effect when either team is ahead by 6 or more goals at/after halftime. LAW XI: Off sides Due to the use of shortened fields and club linesmen, off sides will not be judged or enforced LAW XII: Slide Tackling Slide tackling is not allowed under any circumstance. Team captains will be reminded of this in the captain s meeting; this is considered the first warning for both teams. The first slide tackle will result in a direct free kick for the opposing team and a yellow card (possible red card at the official s judgment). The second slide tackle in the game will result in a direct kick and a red card, automatic ejection. Any slide tackle after will result in the same outcome. LAW XIII: Fouls and misconduct A player who commits a foul shall be penalized by awarding an indirect or direct free kick (see LAW XIII) to the opposing side from the place where the offense occurred Fouls for which a direct free kick is awarded: - Kicking or attempting to kick an opponent - Tripping an opponent - Jumping at an opponent - Charging an opponent in a violent or dangerous manner - Charging from behind unless the opponent is obstructing - Striking or attempting to strike an opponent - Holding an opponent

4 - Pushing an opponent - Carrying, striking, or propelling the ball with the hands or arms (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area) - Sliding on the ground or jumping through the air, feet first, in order to dislodge the ball from an opponent, except in the case of the goalkeeper Should a defending player intentionally commit one of the Direct Free Kick offenses within the penalty area, a penalty kick (see LAW XVI) is awarded to the opposing team Fouls for which an indirect free kick is awarded: - Playing in a dangerous manner - When not playing the ball, intentionally obstructing an opponent - When playing as goalkeeper, indulging in tactics designed to delay the game to his team s advantage - When the goalkeeper takes more than four steps while holding the ball - The goalkeeper is no longer allowed to use his hands on a ball that is deliberately kicked (by the foot of a teammate) to him. Punishment for this foul is an indirect free kick taken from the spot where the goalkeeper touches ball unless it is in the goal area in which case the ball shall be taken from the six-yard line - A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following three offences: holds an opponent spits at an opponent handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area) A player is cautioned (given a warning) if he/she: - Enters, re-enters, or leaves the field without the referee s permission - Persistently infringes the laws - Shows by word or action dissent from a decision made by the referee - Is guilty of un-sportsman like conduct A player is ejected if he/she: - Is guilty of violent conduct or serious foul play - Uses foul or abusive language - Persists in misconduct after receiving a caution - If play is stopped when a player is ordered off the field, the game is resumed by an indirect free kick awarded to the opposing side from the place where the infringement occurred

5 - If a player is ejected the team will be allowed to substitute for that player LAW XIV: Free kicks There are two types of free kicks: direct and indirect. - Direct from which a goal can be scored - Indirect from which a goal cannot be scored unless the ball has been played or touched by a player in addition to the kicker before it passes through the goal When a player is taking a free kick inside his own penalty area, all opposing players must remain outside the area at least 10 yards from the ball. (The ball is not in play until it leaves the area). When he is taking a free kick outside his own penalty area, all opposing players must be at least 10 yards from the ball unless they are standing on their own goal line between the goalposts. On free kicks the ball is in play once it has traveled the distance of its own circumference, and the ball cannot be player against the kick until another player has touched it. LAW XV: Penalty kick If a defending player is within his own team s penalty area when he intentionally commits any one of the 10 offenses that result in awarding a direct free kick, the opposing team is granted a penalty kick. The penalty kick is taken from the penalty spot, and all players (except the goalkeeper) must stay outside of the penalty area and at least 10 yards away from the ball. The defending goalkeeper must remain stationary on his goal line between the goalposts until the kick is taken. The person taking the kick must propel the ball forward and cannot play the ball a second time until another player has touched it. LAW XVI: Throw-ins To restart play after the whole of the ball has passed over a touchline, the ball is thrown in from the point where it crossed the line by a player of the team opposing that of the person who last touched the ball. The thrower must use both hands and deliver the ball from over his head, while keeping part of each foot either on or outside the touchline. He cannot again play the ball until another player has touched it. A goal may not be scored directly from a throw-in. If the ball enters the net on a throw-in, a goal kick is taken. Players may not dance about or try to impede the thrower. LAW XVII: Goal kick When the whole ball passes over the goal line, having last been played

6 by a member of the attacking team, a goal kick is awarded. The ball must be kicked beyond the penalty area and players of the opposing team must remain outside the area while the kick is being taken. The kicker cannot play the ball a second time until another player has touched it and a goal cannot be scored directly from a goal kick. LAW XVIII: Corner kick When the whole of the ball passes over the goal line, having last been played by a member of the defending team, a corner kick is awarded and is kicked from the corner area at the nearest corner flag post. The flag post may not be moved. A goal may be directly scored from a corner kick. Opposing players must remain at least 10 yards from the ball until it has traveled the distance of its own circumference. The kicker cannot play the ball a second time until another player has touched it. LAW XIV: Coaches/Participant behavior Coaches and players are to remain within 10 yards of the halfway line on their side of the field during the game. A referee may order a coach or spectator to leave the vicinity of the field if they are a hindrance to the game. Spectators are to watch the game at least one (1) yard from the touchline. Comments shall be limited to positive reinforcement of the spot of the sports and no foul or abusive language will be tolerated. No alcoholic beverages shall be consumed or allowed near the playing area.
