2 UNIFORM AND PERSONAL PRESENTATION POLICY At Ballarat Christian College, student care regarding personal appearance is important. Students are representing themselves and the College at all times whilst in Uniform. Only the correct College uniform as detailed in the Uniform Requirements is to be worn. It must be clean, in good repair and worn properly. Strict adherence to uniform regulations is required. Uniform will always be worn on excursions, with the organising teacher specifying whether the dress or sports uniform is to be worn and what elements of the uniform are appropriate for the excursion. Parents will be notified to come and collect students from school who are improperly dressed. Full uniform and a high standard of personal presentation are also expected for official College functions as specified, including our annual Celebration Night. The exception to this code may be when students go on camps or special excursions. Students with medical conditions making the wearing of school uniform impossible may be temporarily excused on presentation of a dated Medical Certificate. In this instance, any uniform substitute must still be in the spirit of the accepted standards of personal presentation. Students who wear their uniform incorrectly, or who are out of uniform without permission, will be subject to the College s Discipline Policy. High standards are set by the College, and deliberate non-compliance with the uniform code shows disrespect and disobedience on the part of the student. Parents should note that the College is prepared to assist students with uniform in the event of financial hardship. Uniform items are available from the Uniform Shop and some items are available from retail school uniform stores in Ballarat. Detailed uniform information is available from the Uniform Shop. Points to note: All Senior and Middle School students are required to correctly wear the full College uniform while travelling to and from school. Junior School students wear full College uniform unless it is their allocated sports/p.e. day, when correct College sport uniform is to be worn. Blazers are to be worn by Senior and Middle School students to and from school each day of the school year. Blazers are still to be worn to school on hot days, however students will be notified in home room if they are permitted to leave school without wearing their blazer. Blazers are to be worn to Assembly and Chapel and any other official College function or excursion where official College Uniform is required to be worn. Dress, Tunic and Skirt Length all girls uniform dresses, skirts and tunics are to be LOWER KNEE in length at all times. 1

3 UNIFORM AND PERSONAL PRESENTATION POLICY Ties Senior and Middle School boys and Senior girls (Years 10-12) must wear ties at all times with the official summer and winter uniform. On exceptionally hot days, Senior and Middle School boys and Senior girls will be notified if they are permitted to remove their ties. Middle and Senior School girls must wear ties at all times with their winter uniform. Coats Students are permitted to have a navy coat to keep dry and for extra warmth. It may be worn to and from school, and in the playground. Navy coats are available in the College Uniform Shop. Hats - Approved hats must be worn in the playground during the designated Sun Smart period or as directed by staff. Hats will also be worn for outdoor excursions in summer. Bag - The school bag is navy with the College logo this is available from the Uniform Shop. Footwear : The only approved footwear is as follows : o Girls & Boys black polishable leather lace up shoes. Only students in Prep or Year 1 are permitted to wear shoes with a Velcro fastening strap. Hair Styles: Boys may not have shaved heads a number 2 or 3 cut is the shortest. Boys hair should be cut neatly and to collar length, with ears and eyes visible. Boys must be clean shaven. Girls should have modest hairstyles. Hair must be pulled back from the face, clipped and tied in accordance with O.H. & S. practices. Only navy blue, maroon or white hair ribbons, clips, headbands and combs may be worn. Students are not permitted to have extreme or unusual styles this includes dreadlocks, rat s tails, undercuts, and afros, designs/letters shaved into hair or any other unusual styles. Unnatural hair colour is not permitted, including excessive streaking or bleaching of hair. Badges Only official College badges can be worn on the College uniform. 2

4 UNIFORM AND PERSONAL PRESENTATION POLICY * * The following items are permitted with the uniform: * * Navy waterproof/showerproof coats for Junior School students. Navy scarves, gloves and beanies only may be worn these are available from the Uniform Shop. Jewellery - Watches and S.O.S. medical alert pendants are permitted. Girls are permitted to wear one small stud or sleeper in each ear lobe. Boys are not permitted to wear earrings of any type at all. No body piercing is permitted (other than the specified earrings for girls). Make-up - Light make-up is permitted for girls from Year 10 as specified by the College. Undergarments - Undergarments which do not show under the uniform (eg. plain white T-shirts) may be worn. WHEN SUMMER AND WINTER UNIFORMS MAY BE WORN - Term 1 Summer Uniforms. Term 2 Winter Uniforms. Term 3 Winter Uniforms. Term 4 Summer Uniforms. Please note: in times of extreme temperature forecast the College may grant permission for students to wear the alternate season s uniform for a designated day or days. Parents will be given adequate notice of these times, and this permission only stands for the day/s designated. Remember, as Christians in this Christian setting, we must look and act in a way which does not offend our Christian brothers and sisters, being careful to set a decent and wholesome example, so that no embarrassment or shame is brought to the College or our sacred faith. 3

5 JUNIOR SCHOOL UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS (Years Prep to 5) ALL STUDENTS REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS OF UNIFORM:- Daily Uniform:- Black lace-up school shoes Prep and Year 1 students are permitted to have Velcro fastening black school shoes if they are unable to tie up shoe laces. Maroon V-neck jumper White shirts short sleeve for summer - boys - long or short sleeve for winter girls and boys Sport Uniform for boys and girls:- Maroon College Polo Shirt with logo Navy Microfibre sports shorts Navy Fleecy Sport Top with College logo Navy Fleecy Sport Pants to match Top White Sports socks Non-Marking Sport Shoes predominantly white SPECIFIC UNIFORM ITEMS FOR GIRLS Summer - College Summer dress White fold down ankle socks (preferred) or white knee high socks Winter - College Junior School Tunic. The Junior School Tunic is the official winter uniform for Junior School girls. It should be worn on a daily basis and for all official school functions when winter uniform is required excursions, photos, Celebration Night and other formal functions etc. Please note: Navy Blocker Pants are available to girls as an option, to wear on a normal school day when regular school uniform is worn (non-sport days), provided no official function is to be held. They are to be worn with white ankle or knee high socks. The bib (bodice) of the Tunic is able to be removed to become Middle School Winter skirt in Year 6. Navy Tights are preferred and are also to be worn for official College functions (as above). Knee high white socks are optional for normal school days. Navy ankle socks may be worn under tights for extra warmth. White Long or Short sleeve School Shirt with pointed collar and top button. 4

Senior School Official Summer Uniform (required to be worn for official College functions)is the Senior School lower Knee Length Skirt (darker blue tartan) with white shirt and tie. This uniform may also be worn for day to day school wear if preferred. Optional - College Summer dress - may be worn for day to day school wear (not to be worn for official College functions). White ankle socks with fold over top or knee high socks to be worn with skirt or dress. Winter - Middle School - Winter Skirt (lighter blue tartan) - lower knee length (or mid-calf to ankle length if preferred for warmth). Senior School - Winter Skirt (darker blue tartan) - lower knee length (or mid-calf to ankle length if preferred for warmth). Navy Tights - are preferred for daily wear with the winter uniform, and are required for official College functions where the winter uniform is expected to be worn. Navy ankle socks may be worn under tights for extra warmth. (Knee high white socks are optional for normal school days) 6

8 SPECIFIC UNIFORM ITEMS FOR BOYS:- Summer - Grey shorts. Anklet or knee high grey school socks with College stripe. Elastic waisted shorts or pants may be permitted in certain circumstances. Winter - Long grey pants Ankle or knee length grey school socks with College stripe NOTES: - Senior School girls may choose to wear the summer dress or the official Senior summer uniform (lower knee length skirt, shirt and tie) on a day to day basis at school; however Senior girls are required to wear the official Senior summer uniform for official College functions. White Shirts White shirts are available in the Uniform Shop, however, if shirts are purchased elsewhere it is important to purchase correct school shirts. They need to have a pointed collar and top button for all College students. The preferred brands are Beare and Ley (Lowes Central Square), Fairmark and Midford (Messer & Opie or Crockers). 7
