Pack 353 Spring Family Campout 2016 April 22 24, 2016 Gerald I. Lawhorn Scouting Base Flint River Adventure Area 1166 Dripping Rock Road Molena, GA Camp will open at 5 p.m. Friday and will conclude Sunday morning after a Scout s Own Service. The Campsite: We are staying at Flint River Adventure Area at the Gerald I. Lawhorn Scouting Base in Molena, GA. We will be camping in Patsy Area on the included map. This is the scout camping reservation for the Flint River Council; it is a top notch facility with tons to do right on the Flint River. Tents: You will have the option to bring your own tent or stay in 4 person platform tents. The platform tents are very nice and come with a cot and twin mattress for each person. Costs: Campsite using platform tent - $14 or Campsite using your own tent - $10 Wild Animal Safari Child - $15 (note this includes us getting a bus instead of self-drive) Wild Animal Safari Adult - $18.50 (note this includes us getting a bus instead of selfdrive)
Food for the Weekend - $10 Total per Adult in Platform Tent is $42.50 and Child is $39. My Family Is Going, Who Do I Tell, How Do I Pay: If you are attending please matt.taneri@gmail.com and your Den Leader, no later than Friday April 1, with your name and number of adults and kids attending, please also indicate your choice of Platform Tent or your Own Tent. Platform tents will be limited so RSVP early to lock on in. Payment via the Pack Website ( or the Pack Treasurer by no later than Monday April 18 Den Meetings. Please matt.taneri@gmail.com with any questions. What will we do? There will be planned activities for the boys and their siblings, as well as time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. We will be going to the Wild Animal Safari in Pine Mountain on Sunday Midday and have activities and free time on Saturday around camp. What happens on Friday? Plan to arrive and set up your campsite any time after 5 p.m. It s a great idea to camp in a group with your den this helps build a sense of community among the families. Den leaders, feel free to arrive a little before 5 to stake out an area for your den. Bring board or card games to play on Friday night. Each family should bring snacks to share. We may have a campfire on Friday night depending on schedules and weather. What happens on Saturday? We begin our day with a hot breakfast with plenty of coffee and hot chocolate. In the morning we will have several fun scout activities set up around camp. We will have lunch at camp. In the afternoon we will do flag football and map/compass stations. There will also be free time.
Note there is a small fishing pod on the site if you want to go fishing. After an outstanding Cub Scout Supper we ll end the day with a campfire program in the early evening with lots of songs and skits. S mores will be available following the campfire program. What happens on Sunday? There will be a continental breakfast followed by a flag ceremony and then a Short Scout s Own Service, which is a short, interfaith, non-denominational service. After that we ll clean up camp and pack up and head to the Wild Animal Safari. After we are done at the Safari we can all head home on our own. Wild Animal Safari: We will be going to the Wild Animal Safari in Pine Mountain ( Oak Grove Road Pine Mountain, GA 31822) on Sunday; we will have to leave camp at approx. 10:30 AM to safely be there for our 11:30 AM reservation. We will drive there from Camp but we will ride the bus tour through the Safari. Then do the walk through of the other exhibits at the Safari Park. This is a ton of fun for the whole family. What will we be eating? - Friday night supper is on your own. Eat before you come, or bring your own supper. - Friday night cracker barrel Each family should provide snacks to be shared by everyone in the Pack. Cookies, crackers, chips and salsa, etc. - Saturday a hot breakfast is provided by the Pack consisting of eggs, sausage and pancakes. - Saturday lunch is provided by the pack consisting of cold cut sandwiches and chips. - Saturday supper will be provided by the Pack consisting of chili, hot dogs and fruit cobbler. - Sunday breakfast is provided by the Pack. It will consist of muffins, fruit, coffee, and hot chocolate. - Lemonade and water will be freely available all days during waking hours.
What if I ve never camped before? No experience is necessary. You can use the platform tents, if you need a tent. If you ve never camped, don t worry we ll have some experienced Scouters wandering around on Friday afternoon and evening to help you out. There are flush toilet bathrooms and showers on site. We can only camp one night, or we re not camping. Can we come anyway? Even if you decide not to camp, or you can only camp for one night, don t let that prevent you from coming to participate on Saturday. The April Pack meeting is part of the campfire program on Saturday Evening. Can we come and go? Yes, you can come and go as need to go to other events (like sports) that you already have planned. Please note this is about 2 hours from home. Can siblings participate? We re a very family-oriented Pack. Siblings are ALWAYS welcome at our family campouts. We have supplies available for the siblings. There s no reason why they can t do everything that the Scouts are doing including participating in the campfire program with skits and songs! What is Leave No Trace? Leave No Trace is a policy that Scouts adhere to that dictates we leave no marks upon the land and leave it better than we found it. To that end we need each person to bring his/her own mess kit and water bottle. What needs to be in my mess kit? A mess kit should contain a plate or bowl (or both), utensils to eat with, and a cup or mug for drinks. Ideally they ll be contained in something that can be hung up to dry after washing and will be labeled with the individual s or family s name. We ll provide wash stations so that everyone can wash their own kits. IMPORTANT: Parents, please assist your Scouts with scraping off the food scraps thoroughly before putting the dishes in the wash water. How can we help? Each participant needs to be a committee of one to look for and pick up trash, make sure the boys are using the Buddy System (never alone), and pitch in wherever you see a need. Additionally, families will be assigned a
specific time to assist in the camp kitchen and dining area. It s not only fun, but it s a great opportunity to learn how to cook outdoors. What should the boys wear? Cub Scouts should wear their Class A uniform while travelling to and from the camp, at flag ceremonies, at meals, at the campfire program, and at the Scout s Own Service Sunday morning. Pack t-shirts (Class B uniform) can be worn during activity periods. If your son doesn t yet have a Pack t-shirt, any comfortable and appropriate clothing is fine. No shoes with open toes or sides, no Crocs; hiking boots or tennis shoes should be worn at all times.
