Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian For Financial Institutions
The true cost of a lost laptop to a financial institution is the loss of customer trust and company reputation.
Overview The global nature of the financial industry requires the office to go with you when you have to travel. Laptops are an excellent solution because they offer business mobility and increased productivity. When traveling between cities, countries or clients, financial representatives routinely store large amounts of client or customer data such as financial statements, social security numbers, account information, etc. on their laptops. Once the laptop leaves the protection of the financial institution, it is exposed. When mobile or offline, security software like anti-virus applications, virtual private networks (VPNs) and firewalls cannot be updated, users can bypass corporate policies by turning off security systems (anti-virus, firewall) and installing unauthorized software (file sharing applications and instant messaging), and there is the ever present danger of theft. Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian 3
Sponsored by PGP Corporation and Symantec Corporation, the Ponemon Institute completed several surveys to document the high costs of losing corporate customer data in the United Kingdom and United States. In the first study ("2007 Annual Study: U.K. Cost of a Data Breach" February 2008) identifying the cost of a data breach in the U.K. key findings show: The average cost per lost customer record reached 47 Lost business opportunities represented the most significant data breach cost component Breaches by third-party organizations such as outsourcers, contractors, consultants, and business partners were reported by 38% of respondents, costing 40% more than internal data breaches In the third annual U.S. report ("2007 Annual Study: U.S. Cost of a Data Breach" November 2007): The average cost per lost customer record was $197 in 2007, compared to $182 in 2006 Lost business opportunities represented the most significant component of the cost increase, rising 30% from 2006 Breaches by third-party organizations such as outsourcers, contractors, consultants, and business partners were reported by 40% of respondents, up from 29% in 2006 Ultimately if customer information is lost or stolen, the financial institution bears the brunt of the loss in negative public relations, customer support costs, regulatory fines, and damaged reputation. What is needed is a best practices approach to mobile security that uses consistent always-on security systems to remove the overall risk of data theft. 4 Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian
The solution The Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian (NLG) represents the next generation of mobile computing security. The solution consists of a PCMCIA card, a user client, and a gateway server. The card is a small self-contained computer equipped with its own hardened operating system, memory, storage, rechargeable power, and a 3G cellular modem with global position system (GPS) transceiver that plugs directly into the PCMCIA port of a laptop. Designed to integrate with the laptop, the OmniAccess 3500 NLG takes over specific security functions such as data and session encryption, policy enforcement, and encryption key management, while providing all the tools needed for the IT department to manage and protect the laptop. The client is installed on the laptop for the user to access the full functionality of the card, and the gateway server is an entry point into the corporate VPN termination point. Because it has its own computing resources many of the functions that previously resided on the laptop, such as always-on patch management and data encryption, are taken over by the Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 NLG. With these computationally intense functions offloaded, the full potential of the laptop can be used for business applications evident in increased speed, a more stable computing environment, and 100 percent policy compliance. Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian 5
SECURITY IS ENCRYPTION ENOUGH? During normal use, laptop users will access different networks such as the Internet and corporate and home networks, and share information with other users. These actions expose the laptop to outside attackers and malware like viruses, worms, Trojans, root kits, etc. The OmniAccess 3500 NLG secures the laptop and the information on it using authentication, stateful packet inspection, data encryption, always-on patch management, and asset recovery tools. Regardless of the network a user chooses for connectivity (LAN, Wifi or 3G), the OmniAccess 3500 NLG will always create a secure VPN session. While connected, the OmniAccess 3500 NLG will monitor system access and usage to keep the user from bypassing safeguards such as turning off the firewall. In addition, the OmniAccess 3500 NLG encrypts the data on the laptop and stores the encryption keys in its local memory; the encryption keys are then backed up centrally by the IT department. When a laptop is lost or stolen, it is possible to send a remote kill signal from the IT department that will lock down the laptop, and remove all encryption key information from the system. When combined with strong data encryption, the OmniAccess 3500 NLG makes it impossible for a thief to gain meaningful access to the sensitive data on the laptop. 6 Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian
The Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 NLG provides the necessary connectivity and tools to keep laptops secure, up-to-date, and backed up regardless of location. With the 3G cellular modem, the OmniAccess 3500 NLG will download updates and patches, back up the data on the hard drive, and store encryption keys on the central server through a VPN tunnel. After downloading updates, the OmniAccess 3500 NLG applies them when convenient, even when the laptop is asleep or turned off by automatically waking up the laptop during the update process. This keeps the operating system and security systems current, and helps the laptop to resist attack. In addition to encryption, the OmniAccess 3500 NLG keeps data safe through the ability to send a remote kill signal to inactivate the laptop and a GPS transceiver which is accessible over the 3G network to locate and retrieve the hardware. Once located, the coordinates of the laptop can be relayed to the authorities for retrieval. When the laptop has been retrieved and returned to the IT department, it is an easy task to log into the OmniAccess 3500 NLG and restore the encryption credentials of the user. Once the laptop is recertified for use, access will be given back to its owner. Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian 7
COMPLIANCE The financial world has many requirements, both internal and external, to make sure customer information is secure. Regulatory laws and internal policies need to be enforced. The OmniAccess 3500 NLG provides many functions to help reach 100 percent compliance with regulatory and corporate policies. Regulatory compliance Financial industry regulations such as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act subtitle A, Federal Reserve Board Regulation P, and FSA rule SYSC A require a high level of data protection such as data encryption, session encryption across open or public networks, the regular use of security applications such as firewalls and anti-virus software, and the consistent maintenance of those systems. The Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian satisfies several of the requirements through automatic creation of VPN tunnels, integration of a personal firewall, IP Security (IPSec) encapsulation/encryption/decryption to secure session data, patch management capabilities, data backup services, administrative activity logging and GPS locating functions. This combination of features makes mobile endpoints secure and helps to satisfy the strict requirements for data protection and system security within the financial industry. Policy compliance Normally, when a laptop is not connected to the corporate network it is impossible to guarantee adherence to corporate policies. When installed, the OmniAccess 3500 NLG monitors computer access and usage and stops the user from violating company policies to achieve 100 percent compliance anywhere the laptop is taken. If the OmniAccess 3500 NLG is removed from the computer the system is locked down and the user is not able to access the laptop. By forcing adherence to corporate policies the laptop is more secure and able to better resist attacks. 8 Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Non-Stop Laptop Guardian
ENDPOINT MANAGEMENT The Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 NLG provides IT administrators with the ability to manage laptops from a central location by utilizing the 3G cellular modem to apply updates and backup the contents of the laptop. The OmniAccess 3500 NLG will download updates and patches, back up the data on the hard drive, and store encryption keys on the central server through a VPN tunnel created through the integrated 3G modem. After downloading updates, the OmniAccess 3500 NLG applies them when convenient. This comprehensive and efficient approach to mobile computer management means financial data is always secure and accessible regardless of location with the minimal impact on the administrators. CONCLUSION Mobility is a requirement for today s financial institutions to compete in a global market. Managing and securing mobile endpoints is a daunting task. The Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 NLG is a unique security and management solution targeted to the financial professional to secure the mobile endpoint and ease the pain of corporate policy adherence and regulatory compliance. The self-contained PCMCIA card, user client, and gateway server provide flexible connectivity, always-on remote management, policy enforcement, data encryption and asset protection functions. A laptop with an OmniAccess 3500 NLG is always connected through LAN, WAN, WLAN or the integrated 3G cellular modem, allowing financial professionals to travel the world and know their data is safe and accessible no matter where they go. Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess 3500 Non-Stop Laptop Guardian 9
