Fans of the eighth ranked Tuskegee University Golden Tigers (10-1, 8-1 SIAC) believed their defense had forced and recovered a fumble, while fans of the Alabama State University Hornets (6-5, 6-3 SWAC East) thought their offense had converted the game winning 2-point conversion. After a two-minute discussion the officials informed the crowd of nearly 23,000 people that the conversion was no good and the game was over. Tuskegee beat Alabama State in OT. Golden Tigers fans and players ran around the field jumping up and down like kids on Christmas, celebrating the best Turkey Day Classic Football game in years. Junior quarterback Kevin Huff gave another performance that showed why he is considered the best player in the SIAC and one of the best in all of Division II college football. Huff accounted for 273 total yards (151 yards rushing) and two touchdowns including the 25-yard game winning score on the first play of overtime. He was named the game s Most Valuable Offensive Player. The game was deadlocked in the first half with neither team able to put more than 11 points on the board. With the game tied the Hornets put together a decent drive towards the end of the first half. The Hornets lined up to kick a field goal that would put them up by three going in to halftime, when the Golden Tigers defense rose to the occasion and blocked the first of two field goals in the game. Down 10 points going into the fourth quarter, the Golden Tigers began a rally that will be remembered for years to come. Huff started the fourth quarter by ripping off runs of 31 and 13 yards to set up senior fullback DuShon Greene s one-yard touchdown run to get Tuskegee within three points of Alabama State at Led by senior Torres Mozley who had 13 total tackles, the defense stopped the Hornets and gave the offense the ball back with 3:06 left in the game. After six straight rushes, the longest being a 13-yard run from sophomore running back Richard Fitzhugh, who had 66 yards in the game the Golden Tigers, were at the Hornets 15-yard line. On third and two Huff dropped back and threw a pass to the back corner of the endzone, that Kenneth Henderson appeared to have caught but was ruled incomplete. Senior kicker Roosevelt Echeverry s 32-yard field goal with 22 seconds left tied the game at Alabama State ran the remaining time off the clock to send the game to overtime. Tuskegee got the ball first in overtime and on the very first play Huff

3 rushed for a 25-yard touchdown. Echeverry converted the PAT to put the Golden Tigers up Alabama State scored on their overtime possession and with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called against Tuskegee the ball was moved to the one-yard line. Alabama State chose to go for the two-point conversion and the win. Hornets running back Keldrick Williams fumbled the ball as he lunged for the goal line the ball rolled into the endzone, and senior defensive back Robert Durham picked up the ball and returned to the 50-yard line ending the game. 4 LYNN S KEY S TO WINNING We must continue to play lke i we did in our last three games, particularly like the second of the Virginia Union game as well as against Virginia State and in the CIAA Championship game We have to continue to put points on the board and limit the opportunities for Tuskegee to score They re a great team and they have a great coaching staff and we have to do our part as a coaching staff to make sure our guys are thoroughly prepared and make sure we execute the game plan we ve put in place. Well, that same cliché can be used by Bowie State University after the CIAA Football Championship game. The Bulldogs let a 17-0 halftime advantage slip away and lost to North Carolina Central University. Bowie State sophomore sensation Isaac Redman capped off a 10 play 78 yard drive, pounding in from 2 yards out. Ronald Walls converted the extra point, giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead after one period of play. Walls nailed a 31 yard field goal at the 5:44 mark of the second quarter, increasing the BSU lead to Junior Glenn Thomas caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from junior Lamar Manigo with 36 seconds remaining in quarter two, extending the Bulldogs lead to 17-0.

5 North Carolina Central s Greg Pruitt took an option pitch from Adrian Warren, early in the third quarter, scoring from 26 yards out. Brandon Gilbert s extra point was good, making the score 17-7 Bowie State. Gilbert booted a 33 yard field goal with 4:56 left in the third, narrowing the gap BSU s Thomas (96 reception yards) scored his second TD of the game a little over a minute later, this time from 46 yards away, pushing Bowie State s lead to NCCU s Gilbert kicked a 47 yard field goal with 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter, trimming the BSU lead to ten at Gilbert recorded his third field goal of the game at the 13:55 mark of the final period, this time from 23 yards, pulling the surging Eagles to within seven. NCCU s Warren connected with a streaking Julius McClellan on a 60 yard bomb, giving the Eagles new life at Gilbert converted the extra point, tying the game at 23 with 7:41 left in regulation. The Bulldogs went three and out on its next series, giving the ball back to North Carolina Central at the Eagles 49 yard line. The Eagles were very patient for the next 5:03, driving down to the Bowie State 12 yard line with 7 seconds left in the contest. Following a NCCU timeout and a BSU timeout, NCCU s Gilbert split the goal post with just 3 seconds on the O Kelly- Riddick Stadium scoreboard, giving North Carolina Central the 2005 CIAA Football Championship. For his efforts, Gilbert was selected as the Eagles MVP. Bowie State led North Carolina Central in just about every statistical category (rushing yards to 119, passing yards to 169, first downs - 18 to 17 and possession time - 32:35 to 27:25). Manigo threw for 221 yards, completing 10 of 22 and Redman rushed for his sixth yards game (112 yards) and was named the MVP for Bowie State. BSU s Thomas set another Bulldogs record, becoming Bowie State s all-time Career Reception Yards Leader (1,472), surpassing Mike Bryant s 1,450. Pruitt was North Carolina Central s leading rusher with 99 yards on 21 carries while Torey Ross caught seven passes for 70 yards for the Eagles. North Carolina Central s Derrick Ray led both teams on defense with 11 tackles while Sterling Green and Jasper Chamberlain paced Bowie State with 10 tackles each. FOR THE RECORD Isaac Redman set new Bowie State records for Single Game Rushing Yards (210) versus Elizabeth City State, Single Game Rushing Attempts (33) versus Virginia State, Longest Run from Scrimmage (99 yards) versus Morgan State and Rushing Attempts in a Season (216 and counting). Redman also broke Bowie State s all-time Season Rushing Yards record (1,305 and counting), surpassing Milton Carr s 1975 record of 1,073 yards. Lamar Manigo tied the BSU Record of 4 Touchdown Passes Thrown in game versus Livingstone (9/17/05) and broke Jimmy Whitehead s (1999) record for Bowie State s Single Season Touchdown Passes Thrown (13) at Virginia State (10/29). Manigo also set a new Bowie State record for Career Touchdown Passes Thrown surpassing Whitehead s 19. Manigo s record currently stands at 25 for his career. Glenn Thomas has his name all over the Bowie State record book. Thomas set a new single game Reception Yards record (175) and tied the record for Most Touchdown Receptions in a Game (3) in the first North Carolina Central game. Thomas also set a new record for Most Touchdown Receptions in a Season versus Shaw (10/1/05) and ended the regular season 14. Additionally, Thomas is BSU s Career TD Receptions leader (20) and Bowie s all-time Career Reception Yards leader (1,472).
