1 My Type of Animal In this unit, you are going to learn how to describe animals both orally and in written form. You will be able to talk about your favourite animal in a coherent way and with an acceptable pronunciation, after having had time to prepare your talk. I.- Do you know the name of these animals in Catalan? Can you guess the ones you don t know? eagle bat kangaroo frog whale rhinoceros zebra butterfly lizard hippo penguin bear mosquito buffalo Check your answers in pairs. If you need more practice with animal names go to and do the memory game. II.- ANIMAL PARTS Learn the name of the animal parts. Wing Tusk Trunk Beak Pouch Fin Shell Tail

3 III.- ANIMALS OF THE WORLD Go to Choose one of the five animal groups. Read about that type of animal and then pick one game to play. The object of the game is to correctly guess the mystery animal using as few clues as you can. You have five chances to guess the mystery animal. Write down the name of the animals you guessed correctly here Choose five animals you guessed correctly and complete the mind map with six pieces of relevant information about each of them. 4 IV.- Guess the animal. Listen to a teacher asking questions about an animal. Can you guess which animal it is? The animal is a. V.- Listen to Sarah Jones talking about animals and their habitats. Match the picture and the habitat. How many did you get correct? VI.- Read this text and order the animals according to which animal is the fastest one and according to which animal has the longest life. Which is the fastest animal? MY KIND OF ANIMAL My favourite animal is the polar bear. The polar bear s fur looks white because it reflects the light from the snow. It is transparent. Their thick coat is waterproof and traps air to keep the polar bear warm and dry. Its tail is short and its ears are also short. The male polar bear is about 3.05 meters tall and weighs 295 kg. It s the largest land animal. The polar bear lives in the Arctic. It lives where there is ice. In the wild the polar bear lives up to age 25. The polar bear is a carnivore. It eats seals but it also eats fish. The polar bear can swim very well. It can be under water more than one minute. The polar bear is in danger of extinction. There are only between 25,000 and 40,000 polar bears in the world. Look for some pictures that can help you. Prepare a poster or a power point to help understanding. Don t write the whole description; just words. Rehearse at home. Speak slowly and clearly. Is the description interesting to listen to? Has the presentation got few vocabulary and grammar mistakes? Is the pronunciation and intonation clear and understandable? Is the presentation smooth and easy to follow? Do gestures and mimic help comprehension? Is the poster or the power point original and well designed? Have you rehearsed your presentation?
