1 This document provides a basic introduction to the built-in file sharing options in Mac OS X. How to setup file sharing on one computer, and how to access those shared files from Macintosh computers, via a network connection. This type of basic file sharing is known as peer-to-peer sharing, as files are shared directly from one computer to another, without the need for a dedicated server. 1. Setting up a Network connection in OSX. The computers between which you are sharing files must be connected to the same network Setup TCP/IP, and turn on AppleTalk. Check that your TCP/IP settings and AppleTalk settings are setup correctly. These settings are grouped together in System Preferences under the Network Icon. 1.1 In the System Preferences window, click on the Network Icon... Alternatively, you can choose Network Preferences from under the Apple Menu: If your computer is on an Ethernet network, click on the Show popup menu, and choose Built-in Ethernet: Enter your TCP/IP info in the fields provided in the TCP/IP window.

2 Make AppleTalk active. This is particularly important if you are accessing AppleTalk printers and servers Close the System Preferences, saving your settings when prompted. 2. Setting up OSX Personal File Sharing 2.1 Turning on File Sharing Mac OS X includes an option where you can enable file sharing, which permits other computers on the network to access files stored on your computer. If your computer is sharing these files on a network, it is technically known as a File Server Click on the Sharing icon in the System Preferences window: In the Sharing window, you will see the following information: Check the tick-box next to Personal File Sharing Close the Sharing window.

3 3. Accessing your shared files, from an OSX computer. A computer which has file sharing enabled, and is accessible from other computers on the network (known as clients), is known as a File Server, or simply a Server. To connect to a server from an OSX client: 3.1. Choose Connect to Server, in the Go menu of the Finder. Click on the Server to which you want to connect Enter your username and password: 3.3. Choose the volume(s) to be mounted The volumes you see represent the Home directories of each user on the Server Click on OK. `The selected volume will be mounted on the desktop:: 3.6. If you are the owner of the mounted volume, you will have full access to all the enclosed folders:

If you access another user s volume, you will be granted read-only access to that user s Public folder: You will also be able to drop files in that user s Drop Box If that user wants to make some files available for you to copy to your computer, they can place those files in their Public folder, from where you will be able to copy them to your computer: 3.9. If log on as an Admin user (of the Server computer) you will have access the entire hard disk of the Server Sharing Other Folders in OSX Personal Sharing By default, each user you create has a Home folder, which includes a Public folder. Folders created within each user s Public folder (in the Home folder in the Users folder) can be shared on the network, with other users who log on to the computer Permissions to access folders within the Public folder are setup by selecting the folder to be shared and choosing Get Info (in the File menu), or Control-clicking the folder to see the following window:

5 To test your shared folder, log on to the server as Guest: All other users, including guests, will now be able to gain full access to the folder you have shared above.

NOTE: There is a limit of 10 concurrent users for connection to a server using personal file sharing.
