2 Career Development Institute, Inc. Family built. Building Futures. At Career Development Institute, Inc. (CDI), education is our focus and students are our priority. Family-owned and operated since 1998, we have proudly offered students interested in the nursing profession a personal and unique academic experience for more than 15 years. From enrollment to graduation, our caring and knowledgeable staff are here to help students successfully complete their academic and career goals. We tailor our students' educational experiences by offering small class sizes, free tutoring services and valuable one-on-one attention. We are here for our students and encourage them to come to us for questions, concerns, support and council. We are dedicated to building and advancing our students' careers and futures. When students enroll to CDI, they are made a promise a quality education coupled with an unforgettable experience. CDI is family-built to build your future!
3 School History When CDI opened its doors back in 1998, it opened its doors to the community. Driven by founder and president Janis K. Newton, the school set out to give men and women interested in the medical field the opportunity to make their dreams reality. The school began with courses for Nursing Assistant (NA), Home Health Aide (HHA) and Restorative Nursing Assistant (RNA), providing students with the skills and knowledge to become successful professionals. In August 2003, CDI became the only nursing school in California approved with a mobile classroom, allowing the school to expand its reach and directly engage with the community. In 2005, Janis added the Vocational Nursing (VN) Program to provide students the opportunity to take the next step in their career paths. Former CNA students continue to return to CDI to enroll for the VN program. Janis daughter, Jennifer, joined the staff as the Director of Education in Having received her undergrad at Cornell University and her master's degree at Columbia, Jennifer returned to Los Angeles to partner with her mother and expand the vision of a studentcentered nursing school. Today, CDI continues to offer students a quality education with a personal academic experience. Student Services Student Library Our student library is open during school and office hours to provide students with a quiet place to study, away from distraction. Students have access to a wide variety of reference books, study guides, flash cards and anatomical models. There is also computer access, as well as free wireless internet. Students are encouraged to use the library for individual or group study sessions. Student Lounge & Courtyard The student lounge and courtyard at CDI offer students a relaxing hangout while on break from class or studying with classmates. Fully equipped with a refrigerator, microwave and vending machine, the student lounge serves as the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat or drink while on break. Students can also head to the courtyard, furnished with relaxing patio furniture, to enjoy the beautiful California weather or brush up for an exam. Tutoring Students experiencing academic difficulties or just looking for a little more one-on-one time can request free tutoring sessions through CDI at any point in the program. Our knowledgeable tutors tailor lessons and present course material in an engaging, easy-tounderstand way that keeps students motivated and ready for the next lesson. We are here to help our students succeed free individual or group tutoring services are just one request away!

9 CDI Ambassadors At CDI, it s all about the student, and so in 2013, we established a new program to recognize those who go the extra mile and exemplify excellence in the classroom. These students are viewed as leaders and mentors by their classmates and demonstrate the values and virtues of CDI, as well as the nursing community. Our CDI Ambassadors are available to speak with prospective students looking for a graduate s perspective on the school and VN Program. If you re interested in speaking with one of our ambassadors, please let us know during the enrollment process. Carla T., LVN Class of 2012 I did my homework and visited other schools, mostly larger programs than CDI. While there are many great programs out there, I was looking for something more personable, somewhere I could receive personal one-on-one attention. CDI provided that personal attention I was looking for. They let it be known that they are always there to help. CDI is always rooting for you. You can see it in their faces and in their smiles. Having worked with my mother for more than 25 years in the family hair salon, I really related to the mother-daughter dynamic of CDI, and actually, found it very endearing. I found myself inspired by Janis strength and independence, and her desire to help students. Meenu A., LVN Class of 2012 If you really want to learn something, go to CDI. That s what I tell my friends. This school pushes you to be your best. If you want to learn, they will help you understand. I could always go to them to discuss what was going on, and they would help me by providing solutions. CDI is always there to help you solve any problems you may have. If you want do something, don t worry about others who may be negative. Positivity has the influence to allow you to do positive things.
10 Frequently Asked Questions Are you accredited? Yes, CDI is accredited with:! The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)! The Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT)! The Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE)! The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Do I need to take an entrance exam to enroll into the VN program? Yes. The exam is free of charge and takes an hour and fifteen minutes to complete. It covers grammar, reading comprehension and math. Pending your score, you may need to take a second test, which is shorter and focused on critical thinking. If I went to another school, can I get credit for the courses I completed? Receiving credit from another institution is dependent on a number of factors, including the course material, grade received, and when the course was completed. To determine if you can receive credit, fax a copy of your transcript to Be sure to include a cover note addressed to the Director of Education. What if I received my diploma outside the United States? Will you still accept it? If you received your high school diploma from a foreign country, you will need to have it evaluated by an International Education Evaluation Service. Enrollment cannot be completed until we have received a letter from the evaluation service, indicating that your education is equivalent to that of a U.S. high school education. The evaluation is at the student s expense and must include a summary from the evaluating agency. Do you offer financial aid? Yes. Our Financial Aid Officer is here to help students determine their eligibility and decide which resources are best suited for their circumstances. 11 Meet CDI President and Founder, Janis K. Newton What inspired you to open CDI? My background is education. I have been a credentialed teacher for more than thirty years, and also have a Bachelor's Degree in Health Science. I worked at Cedars-Sinai for several years as an operating room instructor, working closely with nurses. As with life, one thing led to another. I saw the opportunity to give back to the community while also combining two of my passions education and the medical field. What do you think sets CDI apart from other nursing schools? I think students resonate with the family dynamic of CDI. We pride ourselves on being a small school because it gives us the ability to know our students on a personal level. At CDI, students are not just another number they see and work with our team throughout their time with us. It s an open door policy here. What do you enjoy most about CDI? Through the years, we ve been able to help a lot of people. It s rewarding to see our students grow and develop into their potential. Whether it s people looking to further their training or those who have taken nursing on as a new profession, we re able to give them the opportunity to accomplish their goals. What advice can you give prospective students? The best way to ensure success at our school, or any school for that matter, is to make sure your life is in balance. Make sure you ve set your priorities before you enroll. Education is an investment into your future. Also make sure you have a solid support system in place. If you are working, make time for school. Study outside the classroom. Set your priorities so that you are in a place to succeed. We want to see and help our students succeed in their personal and academic goals. If you don t start on the right step and have your priorities in order, it can diminish your chances of success.
