1 Fly Tyer s Bench March by Emmitt Simmons Introduction Red Stick Day Recap Red Stick Day was a great experience for all concerned. At the Friday banquet, I especially enjoyed the wonderful guitar concert by Oscar Feliu. On Saturday, between seminars on kayak fishing the delta, fly tying inshore patterns by Oscar Feliu, and guided fly fishing charters by Higher Education Charters, and Dutch Oven Cooking demonstrations, there was never an idle moment. I tried to concentrate on watching the tyer s demonstrate their skills between sessions. Unfortunately I didn t get to sit with every one of them, but I certainly picked up a lot of information and ideas. And after all, that s what the day is about - educating oneself and broadening your appreciation for the sport. Black Tailed Finger Mullet Fly Tied for RSFF Fly Tying Meeting by John Ryan Denig FLY RECIPE: GAMAKATSU SC15 HOOKS 1/0 BLACK CONGO HAIR WHITE CONGO HAIR MULLET BAITFISH MIX CONGO HAIR 3D EYES RED CRAFT FUR MONO.005 THREAD FLASH - IF DESIRED Take about a wooden match size clump of Black Congo Hair and clip/combine the sections until length is one quarter of the original length. This will be the tail fin. Take a slightly larger diameter section of White Congo hair clip in half. This will become the baitfish underside and connection to the Tail Fin. Spread out the Black Congo Hair and lay the White Congo Hair on top overlapping by about 3/4s of an inch. Envelope the overlapped portion of the White Congo Hair with the Black Congo Hair. Using Mono Thread make several wraps about 3/8s of an inch onto the Black Congo Hair. Once secure finish with a Whip Finish or several Half Hitches as desired. Coat Wraps with Super Glue or Head Cement.

2 Clip a match sized section of Red Craft Fur and loosely tie it onto the hook shank just forward of the hook bend. Rotate the Craft Fur under the hook shank and divide the craft fur on each side of the hook pointing backwards. Dems da Gills! Trim excess Craft Fur. Tail Section should now be tied onto the top of the hook shank slightly overlapping where the Craft Fur was tied on. Select a clump of Mullet Mix Congo Hair, clip in half and combine. The first section of Mullet Mix Congo Hair will be tied at the clump s midpoint just forward of where the Tail Section is tied in. Make sure that the Mullet Congo Hair is long enough to overlap the Black Tail Fin by about half an inch. After tying in the middle of the section fold the other half of the Mullet Mix Congo Hair towards the back of the hook. It s best to try to spread the Congo Hair around the top of the hook shank. Invert the fly in the vise. Now it s time to tie in a (are ya ready) match sized diameter clump of White Congo Hair. The first section tied in should be long enough to overlap the bottom of the Tail Fin. Tie the Congo Hair in on the side of the hook shank at the clumps mid section. Once secured, take the other end of the White Congo Hair and wrap it across the hook shank and pull it down and backwards. Thus, creating a V shaped clump of White Congo Hair on the hook s bottom pointing down and backwards. What we are trying to make is a 3D sculpture of a baitfish from the hair using dark colors on top and light colors on the bottom. These clumps are tied in alternately towards the front of the hook using shorter and shorter clumps.

3 Eventually, you will end up with something like this. The Congo Hair can be tied all the way to the hook eye or a weed guard can be added immediately behind the hook eye. Now Trimming. Remember that we are looking for a long cylindrical shape. Start trimming the Congo Hair to finish sculpting the fly. It s advisable to start from the front and trim towards the back while leaving the long strands of Hair touching the Tail Fin. You can always go back and trim more, but, you can t add Hair once it s finished - so slow and careful is the rule with trimming. Shape the Tail Fin as desired. Once the Trimming is done, eyes should be glued into shape with Goop or Gel Superglue. If desired when tying in the clumps of Congo Hair you can also tie in some flash to make the fly some kinda Purdy. Now.. go catch fish!!!! 4 Ultra Shrimp Fly Almost Tied for RSFF Fly Tying Meeting by John Ryan Denig FLY RECIPE: MUSTAD SIZE 4 HOOKS MONO EYES SILLI LEGS POWER PRO GLOW IN THE DARK FLASH WHITE OR TAN ANGEL HAIR MONO THREAD EPOXY OR UV CURE RESIN TAN OR GRIZZLED HACKLE FEATHER OK.. let s get started! Start a thread base on a Size Mustad Hook. Wrap the Mono back even with the hook point. Tie in 2 strands of legs at their midpoint leaving 2 legs on each side of the hook hanging down. Next we re going to tie in a piece of Power Pro to act as antennae. Now tie in Mono Eyes made from heavy monofilament that has been melted into a ball at each end and colored black with a permanent marker. Cut a section of Glow Flash and lash it to the top of the hook shank. Leave about a quarter inch hanging beyond the hook eye and an inch or so past the eyes. Tie in a Grizzly Hackle Feather right behind the eyes. Wrap the Hackle back towards the Hook Shank and secure. These are what Biologists term. Itsy Bitsy legs.. or maybe not, but, you

5 get the idea. Using the scissors trim off the Hackle on the top of the hook shank and off the sides - so the fly looks like shrimp did before the BP Oil Spill. Now take a clump of White or Tan Angel Hair and tie to the top of the hook shank from hook eye to bend in the hook making segments as you go forward. Again, overlap the hook shank as you did with the Glow Flash. Now it s time to trim the fly and legs. Legs can be barred if you so desire. At this point.. you re done, maybe. You can fish it like it is or use epoxy to make a body or, as pictured, use a UV Cure product to make the body.

Yes, I could have gotten somebody else but I enjoy demonstrating patterns, too. With Concordia coming up next month I thought it would be time to pull out some warmwater patterns.
