ISANNELEADS Outcomes

ISANNELEADS Outcomes Each participant will leave the 5-day institute at The Tilton School with a personal mission statement including core values and a series of action items to focus on during the coming year.

Each participant will identify blind spots in their personality style. An action plan will be developed for each blind spot.

Each participant will identify a leadership project at their school that they will conduct with the support of their head. The objective is to create a meaningful project resulting in each cohort member being fully empowered to lead a group of fellow professionals toward an end product that will benefit the school as a whole. The success of the effort is directly related to the cohort member s ability to lead people.

As personal wellness is a critical component of successful leaders, each participant will implement a personal wellness plan for the coming year.

Personal Mission Statement

Stephen Covey 7 Habits of Highly Effective People 7 Habits of Highly Successful People Training Principle Center Leadership Training Drafted my mission statement in 1992 ish and will make some adjustments this week Virtually all of my presentation is a result of my Covey training

Personal Missioning Understanding yourself Understanding your wants and needs Understanding your priorities It is both personal and professional

Key Paradigms You are responsible for your own choices and have the freedom to choose. You can choose your own future and create a vision of it. Expand your personal freedom and influence through being proactive

Key Process Be a transitional figure to benefit yourself and others Create and apply personal and organizational mission statements as constitutions to live by Envision the desired results and important values to guide activities and endeavors

Being Principle Center Personal Core Values Universally Understood Principles Family Partner Self Spirituality Enemy Friend Pleasure Work Possessions Money

Mission Statement as defined by Stephen Covey A powerful document that expresses your personal sense of purpose and meaning in life. It acts as a governing constitution by which you evaluate decisions and choose behaviors

The Process of Writing a Personal Mission Statement What things do I want to have that I feel are important? What am I about? What qualities of character I would like to emulate? What legacy do I want to leave?

Have: Results you want to achieve Make a list of the things you want to have that you feel are important. Haves can be tangible possessions like a house or intangibles like a happy family

Do: Contributions and Accomplishments When I daydream, what do I see myself doing? If I had unlimited time and resources, what would I do? When I look at my work life, which activities do I consider of greatest worth? When I look at my personal life, which activities do I consider of greatest worth?

What do I consider to be my most important future contributions to others? What talents do I have, whether developed or undeveloped? Are there things I feel I really should do even though I might have dismissed such thoughts many times before for various reasons? What are they?

Be: Look to an influential person Who has served as a positive role model for me and has had a significant impact in my life? Why did that person have such impact? What qualities does this person possess that I would really like to emulate? What other qualities of character do I most admire in others?

Be: Your Life's Legacy Write down seven key roles you play in your life and a key person to speak about your effectiveness in that role What would this key person say about you at your 80 th birthday party

Do you know this person? I am at my best when I am at my worst when I am truly happy when I want to be a person who Someday I would like to My deepest positive emotions come when My greatest talents and best gifts are When all is said and done, the most important things are Possible life goals for me are

Write for 5 minutes Just write Do not worry about what it looks like This is a start!

Examples Mahatma Gandhi's mission is captured in a short list of active statements. You can craft your mission in this style, starting each sentence with "I shall" or "I will." Let the first act of every morning be to make the following resolve for the day: I shall not fear anyone on Earth. I shall fear only God. I shall not bear ill will toward anyone. I shall not submit to injustice from anyone. I shall conquer untruth by truth. And in resisting untruth, I shall put up with all suffering.

Examples MARTIN LUTHER KING JR....I say to you today, my friends. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

Chastity: Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another's peace or reputation. Examples Benjamin Franklin Temperance: Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation. Silence: Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation. Order: Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time. Resolution: Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve. Frugality: Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e., waste nothing. Industry: Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions. Sincerity: Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly. Justice: Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that are your duty. Moderation: Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve. Cleanliness: Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, clothes, or habitation. Tranquility: Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable.

Examples Anonymous My mission is to give, for giving is what I do best and I can learn to do better. I will seek to learn, for learning is the basis for growth, and growing is the key to living. I will seek first to understand, for understanding is the key to finding value, and value is the basis for respect, decisions, and action. This should be my first act with my wife, my family, and my business. I want to help influence the future development of people and organizations. I want to teach my children and others to love and laugh, to learn and grow beyond their current bounds. I will build personal, business, and civic relationships by giving, in frequent little ways.

My Mission Drafted 1992ish as a result of a similar leadership experience.

Mission I shall base all decisions and behaviors as a human being on the principles of loyalty, love, honesty, trustworthiness, integrity and service. I am a life long learner forever seeking a better understanding of the world of which I am a part; personal reflection and introspection being the cornerstones of my learning. I will pursue a vision of high standards and excellence at whatever I do making no distinction between work and play, labor and leisure, mind and body. I am thankful to those who have supported me throughout my life and will always give back to those people and organizations.

Core Values Core Values To always support and partner with my wife and children To treat all people with dignity and respect To honor and celebrate the diversity of all people To commit my professional life to the leadership of educational organizations

Pledge "I shall not cease from exploration and the end of all my exploring will be to arrive where I started and know that place for the first time"- T. S. Eliot

Franklin Covey Leading Questions Performance Passion Talents Imagination Vision Character Contribution Conscience Influence Balance

PERFORMANCE I am at my best when... I am at my worst when...

PASSION What do I really love to do at work? What do I really love to do in my personal life?

TALENTS My natural gifts and talents are: (Examples may be art, music, decision making, being a friend, etc.)

IMAGINATION If I had unlimited time and resources, and knew I could not fail, what would I choose to do?

VISION Imagine your life as an epic journey with you as the hero/heroine of the story. What do you imagine your journey to be about? Complete the following statement by describing what you are doing, who is it for, why you are doing it, and what the journey s results are. MY LIFE S JOURNEY IS...

CHARACTER IMAGINE YOUR 80TH BIRTHDAY. WHO WILL BE THERE WITH YOU? WHAT TRIBUTE STATEMENT WOULD YOU LIKE THEM TO MAKE ABOUT YOUR LIFE?

CONTRIBUTION WHAT DO I CONSIDER TO BE MY MOST IMPORTANT FUTURE CONTRIBUTION TO THE MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN MY LIFE?

CONSCIENCE ARE THERE THINGS I FEEL I REALLY SHOULD DO OR CHANGE, EVEN THOUGH I MAY HAVE DISMISSED SUCH THOUGHTS MANY TIMES? WHAT ARE THEY?

INFLUENCE Imagine you could invite to dinner three people who have influenced you the most past or present. Write their names in the boxes below. Then record the one quality or attribute you admire most in these people.

BALANCE Let's think of balance as a state of fulfillment and renewal in each of the four dimensions: physical, spiritual, mental, and social/emotional. What are the single most important things you can do in each of these areas that will have the greatest positive impact on your life and help you achieve a sense of balance?

You now have the beginning of a mission statement built on a foundation of your values. You have more clarity into you want to be and to do in your life. You can also start to detect the values and principles upon which your life is based.
