2 Who we are At Care for the Family we are passionate about reaching out to parents and couples, to help them build strong relationships and support them in times of difficulty. One way we are making a difference to families throughout the UK is through our popular and effective range of Positive Parenting courses, which includes the Time Out for Parents series, How to Drug Proof Your Kids and Quidz In. Our Positive Parenting team have over 20 years of experience in producing high-quality parenting courses and resources, and in training people to become effective and highly-motivated parenting course facilitators. To date, over 1100 people have been trained by our Positive Parenting team. As a result, many thousands of people have attended one of our courses in community centres, village halls, schools, Sure Start Children s Centres and churches across the UK. Our vision Through Positive Parenting, we want every parent in the UK to have access to high-quality parenting courses that will equip, encourage and support them through their various stages of parenthood. It is our passion to see mums and dads not only survive, but thrive as a parent. 4 What we do We train people to be effective parenting facilitators This high-quality training is suitable for anyone working with parents, including parenting facilitators, multi-agency teams, churches and those working in voluntary organisations. The training is accessible, interactive, cost-effective and suits all learning styles. It also gives you a licence to deliver our own range of Positive Parenting courses. We produce a range of parenting courses A lot of research, creativity, time and attention goes into preparing every course we produce. Our aim is to provide courses and accompanying materials which help mums and dads build a strong and secure relationship with their child, whatever their age. We deliver workshops and courses for parents All of our Positive Parenting staff regularly run parenting courses. This ensures that they are fresh in their thinking and acutely aware of a parent s experience on our courses. Plus they continue to understand what it means to use our resources in the local community as a facilitator. We work with passionate people Whether we work with people from statutory groups, the voluntary sector, community organisations, charities or churches, the common bond is our desire to see parents and family life flourish. 4 A guide to our training and courses

6 Our courses There is something very special in meeting up with other mums and dads on one of our Positive Parenting courses. Each course is built on sound principles and well informed by evidence-based research. Their common sense, user-friendly and practical approach is very popular with parents. The courses are informal and interactive, making good use of visual content, group discussion and practical activities. Our parent handbooks are easy to follow and a helpful tool when parents are applying what they ve learnt with their children. The easy-to-use Facilitator Manual with facilitator notes includes background theory and learning outcomes for each session and provides everything a facilitator needs to deliver the course successfully. Each session from our courses lasts around two hours, including a break. The sessions are fully described with introductions, activities and links to the PowerPoint slides and Parent Handbook. Who can run our courses? To run our core or specialist courses you need to obtain the relevant facilitator licence. See page 16 for more details. 8 Core range Time Out for Parents The Early Years Who is it for? This six session course is designed to help parents and carers negotiate the early years with confidence and build strong family relationships for the future. What does it cover? The arrival of a new baby brings surprises, disappointments and joys along the way. Bringing together mums and dads, this course looks at how parents can build healthy relationships with their babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers and develop learning through fun and play. Parents explore the effects of different parenting styles, why boundaries matter and discuss a toolkit of strategies for handling difficult behaviour. Finally, the course takes time to think about building stronger family relationships through shared activities and creating family traditions. This gives commissioners assurance in us to deliver quality parenting services and parents confidence to attend our supportive Early Years course. 9 Time Out for Parents The Primary Years Who is it for? This six session course will help parents and carers build on the foundations of the early years and continue to develop healthy family relationships through good communication skills and building a child s self-esteem. What does it cover? The aim of the course is to help parents guide their children through this next stage of childhood as they develop friendships, face homework challenges and understand what they re good at. Parents will be able to identify and understand ways to work with their child s unique temperament and how to handle their child s emotions, including anger. The course also provides a framework for parents to help manage their child s behaviour using a range of strategies. As children begin to venture further afield, this is also a time to explore safety issues including bullying, keeping safe outside the home and the complexities of the internet and mobile phones. Parents also discuss more ways to build stronger family relationships as they journey through the rollercoaster of life. 10 Core range Time Out for Parents The Teenage Years Who is it for? This seven session course is designed to help parents stay connected with their child through understanding their world and developing good communication skills. What does it cover? Parents explore how to build strong relationships with their teenager and help their teen be more emotionally secure. It looks at how families can handle conflict more effectively, which battles are important, exploring anger styles, and developing negotiation skills. It also covers how parents can effectively set and maintain age appropriate boundaries with their teenager. Parents also take time to discuss how they can play a part in helping their teenagers with big issues such as relationships and sex, drugs and the online world. With growing independence, parents are also encouraged to find different ways to spend family time together. 11 Time Out for Parents Dads Who is it for? This series of five workshops will help dads and male care givers of any age child, develop the relationship with their child whether they re parenting as a couple, single parent or an away dad. The aim is to help dads share their feelings and experiences and come up with solutions to their problems on the basis of what works for them. Core range What does it cover? Dads look at how they can improve their understanding on how to meet their child s needs, including learning and development. Key aspects are explored including building self-esteem and positive communication. The workshops also look at setting and maintaining boundaries along with effective ways to help manage their child s behaviour. There s also time for dads to think about how their role might change as their child grows and ways to build healthy relationships with the wider family. Session titles: What are dads for? 12 Specialist range Time Out for Parents Children with Special Needs Who is it for? This seven session course is designed for parents and carers of children aged between 3 to 11 with a disability or special needs, particularly those who have learning, developmental or behavioural issues. What does it cover? Parents of children with special educational needs often feel isolated and frustrated that standard parenting advice sometimes doesn t work. Recognising the reality of parenting a child with special needs, the sessions help parents explore how they can talk to their child about their condition and how to recognise and cope with feelings and experiences. Also to explore solutions to problems on the basis of what works - not what s meant to work! Parents look at the many reasons behind behaviour and explore a toolkit of discipline strategies. Home and school are often big issues and parents look at how they can play a part in this and where to look for further support. Finally, there s a chance to recognise the impact on the wider family and to review what the course has meant to parents. 13 Additional Sessions Included in the Time Out for Parents Children with Special Needs are the following two in-depth topics: Time Out for Parents Children with ADHD Specialist range Who is it for? These three sessions are for parents or carers of children aged 3 to 11 who have a diagnosis of ADD, ADHD, DAMP or Hyperkinetic Disorder. What does it cover? Understanding ADHD Managing hyperactive behaviours Managing impulsive behaviours Time Out for Parents Children with ASD Who is it for? These three sessions are for parents and carers of children aged 3 to 11 with ASD, Autism or Asperger s Syndrome. What does it cover? 14 Specialist range How to Drug Proof your Kids (DPYK) Who is it for? This six session course for parents concentrates on the important role a parent can play in steering their children away from harmful alcohol and other drug use. It gives parents the skills and knowledge to help their children to make good choices. What does it cover? Can parents really drug proof their kids? If you mean, Can they stop their child from trying tobacco, alcohol or illegal drugs? - the answer is no. But if you mean, Is there any way parents can influence the choices their child makes about these things? - the answer is yes. DPYK gives a realistic overview of drug use in society and the harm it can do to people and families. Parents take time to explore how their own beliefs, attitudes and behaviours influence their children and what they can do to help them make good choices. The sessions also focus on building strong and loving relationships, helpful ways of communicating and useful ways on how to respond to difficult issues such as alcohol use. Through DPYK the hope is that parents will recognise they are not on their own facing these issues, with opportunities to help them explore where they can get on-going support. 15 Quidz In Raising financially confident kids Who is it for? The six sessions will encourage and build parent s confidence to help their child, aged 8 to 14, to understand key skills in handling money, from budgeting through to spending, saving and planning for the future. Specialist range What does it cover? Quidz In gives parents the knowledge they need to talk with their children about money from an early age on key areas including saving, borrowing and planning ahead. Throughout the sessions parents are provided with information and strategies for effective money management, giving them practical money skills for everyday tasks such as spending, saving, borrowing and giving. There s time for parents to explore the influences that affect how they view and use money to help increase their confidence in their own personal money management. Quidz In also gives parents opportunities to look at key ways of building healthy family relationships, including helpful communication, positive self esteem and how to manage their child s behaviour. 16 Our training Train to become a licensed facilitator and run our courses, helping to support families in your area. Our training is designed to license people and ensure our courses are run well by facilitators with the skills, knowledge and confidence to work effectively in groups with parents. Core parenting courses To be licensed to run our core range of Positive Parenting courses you will need to have completed our Facilitating Groups and Working with Parents training.* Specialist parenting courses In order to run one of our specialist parenting courses, you will need to attend a Familiarisation day in addition to our Facilitating Groups and Working with Parents training.* Once you are a licensed facilitator you can book onto these one day training events to help support parents with specific needs in your community. See pages 18 to 21 for more details. *Approved Prior Learning We may be able to approve your prior learning if you have already successfully completed training with a recognised provider. Your training would have to be at a minimum of Level 3 with the Open College Network and cover the essential topics in our training. You will need to complete an online form on our website. 17 Facilitator licences Once you have completed the relevant training or have gained Approved Prior Learning, you will be issued with a facilitator licence. Each licence is issued for a period of 24 months and will be renewed for a further 24 months when you register at least one course within this time period and return appropriate course documentation to Care for the Family. We provide our licensed facilitators with on going support through a free-phone helpline, dedicated webpages and e-newsletters. The trainers have brought a wealth of knowledge, woven with personal examples and illustrations that have earthed the content and made it relevant, interesting and valuable. 17

18 Facilitating Groups Two days non-residential Our Facilitating Groups training is designed to give you the knowledge, skills and confidence to work with groups of parents. Our practical, high quality training will introduce you to small group facilitation skills and enable you to reflect and build on your existing knowledge and practice. It is ideal for working in adult groups in both formal and informal settings. Working with Parents Two day non-residential Our Working with Parents training uses theories to equip you to deliver effective parenting courses. You will find the training practical and interactive looking at key evidence-based theories and research and how you can apply this day to day when working with parents, both in groups and supporting them one to one. Our training is mapped to the 2011 National Occupational Standards for Working with Parents. You will need to complete the Facilitating Groups and Working with Parents training in order to become a licensed facilitator to run our Positive Parenting courses. Familiarisation days These one day training events provide further training for our licensed facilitators and equip them to run our specialist Positive Parenting courses with an excellent understanding and added confidence. 19 Accreditation Accreditation is an optional extra that is assessed through a written portfolio of work. Your accreditation will give you six credits at Level 3 with the Open College Network. In-house training we ll come to you! Along with the option of coming to one of our training centres to train as an individual or with others, our high-quality training is available in-house allowing you to make the arrangements for your workforce or volunteers at a time and place convenient for your organisation.
