3 The Mulberry Centre The Mulberry Centre (TMC) is a cancer information and support centre based in the grounds of the West Middlesex University Hospital in Isleworth, Middlesex. We are a registered charity and the majority of our funding comes from charitable donations. All our services are free of charge. OUR VISION To be known and respected by everyone living or working within reach of our services who is affected by cancer. OUR MISSION The core mission of The Mulberry Centre is to provide support and information for anyone affected by cancer, offering practical ways of enhancing physical, psychological and emotional well-being. We aim to achieve this through support and information services, counselling and a range of complementary therapies to cancer patients of all ages, their families, carers and friends, in a welcoming and non-clinical environment. OUR CORE VALUES User focus Excellence Integrity Compassion Our opening hours for users are Monday to Friday 10am- 4pm and 10am -8pm on Thursday. We are staffed by a small team of paid personnel and a large team of volunteers. The services offered by TMC are briefly described below. Further details can be found on TMC website. 4 The Mulberry Centre s partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support The Mulberry Centre and Macmillan Cancer Support have a strong historical partnership and are working together to ensure that people affected by cancer are able to access the information and support that they need. The Mulberry Centre and Macmillan have worked together to develop several Macmillan posts at The Mulberry Centre. For further information about becoming a Macmillan Professionals please refer here: lan.org.uk/aboutus/healthprofessionals/healthprofs.aspx Priorities of Macmillan Cancer Support Macmillan has identified nine key outcomes that it wishes to achieve for people living with cancer by These are outlined below and underpin all of Macmillan s work. 5 Job Description Job Title: Hours: Salary: Cancer Information and Support Assistant 30 hrs/week 25,000-29,000 (depending on experience) pro rata AIM AND POSITION IN ORGANISATION To support the Mulberry Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager (MMCISM). The post holder will report to the MMCISM. OVERALL OBJECTIVES To be first point of contact for anyone wishing to access The Mulberry Centre s services. To provide a comprehensive holistic cancer information and support service within The Mulberry Centre to meet the needs of cancer patients, carers and those bereaved as a result of cancer. To be current with best practice on professional issues in cancer information, support, treatment and care, plus local and national trends and developments in this field e.g. NHS and cancer research. To support the MMCISM to develop a comprehensive support and information programme and ensure consistent high quality delivery. To support the MMCISM in developing The Mulberry Centre s key relationships with health and social care professionals. Page 5 of 10

6 MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES Expert Practice 1. To provide confidential support to patients, their carers and those bereaved by cancer, utilising a range of recognised counselling skills. This includes sessions with new users to make an initial assessment to help identify support and informational needs and to assess any psychosocial aspects of this condition. 2. To ensure that users are directed towards the relevant services whether within or outside The Mulberry Centre. 3. To respond to enquiries and requests for information from a range of sources, including health professionals. Education 4. To coordinate and disseminate information on The Mulberry Centre s support and information services. 5. To assist in the development and delivery of our workshop and social/creative programme for anyone accessing the Centre. 6. To be involved in the delivery of an external information programme in collaboration with the Mulberry Macmillan Outreach Manager including, for example, delivering some presentations and information stands at selected events. Monitoring of Information and Support Services 7. To contribute to monthly and quarterly reports on the service and participate in service reviews. Personal Development 8. To continue his/her own personal development through the pursuit of relevant professional and academic study. 9. To keep up-to-date on professional issues in cancer, research and the National Health Service. 10. To undertake regular professional supervision in line with counselling protocols and Centre policy. TMC Staff / Volunteers 11. To liaise with the Centre s Chief Executive and Community Fundraiser to maximize opportunities to develop new networks to increase awareness of TMC amongst both potential service users and the wider public and to support fundraising initiatives. 12. To develop effective communications with volunteers as well as engage personally with senior volunteers and external stakeholders. Page 6 of 10

7 General duties and responsibilities 13. To ensure that the support and information services offered at TMC remain user-led a product of user need. 14. To drive a culture that embraces change, open communication, ambition, innovation, future-thinking and external focus. 15. To develop and support a culture that acknowledges the importance of training and personal development. 16. To work collaboratively with colleagues and key stakeholders (e.g. CEO, MMCISM, MMOM, Trustees, volunteers) in order to achieve TMC s organizational objectives. 17. To attend, as appropriate, meetings, community fairs/fundraising events as and when necessary. (Some of these events may be outside of normal office hours). 18. To be available as a member of staff on the late night opening rota. 19. To undertake additional activities related to the role as identified in discussion with the MMCISM and CEO. Page 7 of 10

8 PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential Qualifications/Skills Desirable Ability to provide personalised support and information to cancer patients, carers and the bereaved through a broad understanding of information provision and counselling skills. Ability to offer empathetic understanding and participate in difficult conversations. Excellent communication and relationship skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent organisational skills. Experience in presenting to individuals and groups of people Ability to source and evaluate a comprehensive range of information and distil into key requirements. Proven IT skills. Competent in all aspects of Microsoft Office. Personal Characteristics Recognised counselling qualification. Working knowledge of Welfare Rights and Benefits. Project management skills. Innovative, dynamic and sympathetic to the aims of The Mulberry Centre. Highly motivated team player with a positive collaborative outlook and the ability to work across the organisation and with external stakeholders to achieve results. Forward thinking with a logical mind. Confident, well presented, socially skilled, approachable, empathetic. Sensitive to the needs of minority and vulnerable groups. 10 Information for Candidates Terms and Conditions of Employment Outlined below are some of the main terms and conditions of employment relevant to all employees of The Mulberry Centre (TMC). Probation All posts are subject to a probationary period of 3 months unless otherwise stated on the letter of appointment, during which your performance will be reviewed from time to time. During this probationary period, either party may terminate the contract by giving one month s notice. After satisfactory completion of the probationary period, the notice stated on your contract of employment will apply. Location Your place of work is at The Mulberry Centre, West Middlesex University Hospital, Twickenham Road, Isleworth TW7 6AF. TMC may require you to work at such other place or places as TMC may reasonably from time to time determine. Salary Payment The commencing salary will be as stated in the contract of appointment. Salaries are paid in arrears on or around the 25th of each calendar month, by direct credit transfer into a bank or building society account. Annual Leave Holiday entitlement is 23 days holiday per year, excluding public and statutory bank holidays. Holiday will be calculated on a pro-rata basis for part-time workers. TMC s holiday year runs from 1 st January to 31 st December. Holiday entitlement not taken in one holiday year may not be carried over to the next without the prior approval in writing from the Chief Executive. Pension Scheme TMC maintains no Pension Scheme other than the State Earnings Related Pensions Scheme but will contribute 6% of your salary to your personal pension scheme. No Smoking TMC operates a no smoking policy. Page 10 of 10
