1 RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOLS AWARD: LEVEL 1 ACTION PLAN School Name: Minishant Primary School Date: November 2014 Standard A: Rights-respecting values underpin leadership and management The best interests of the child are a top priority in all actions. Leaders are committed to placing the values and principles of the CRC at the heart of all policies and practice. Criteria 1-5 are actioned and delivered by the school s leadership / management Revisit school vision to ensure Committee March RRSA underpins this. Whole School The school uses RRSA to underpin its vision for school improvement. Ethos across the school is a Rights Respecting School one. This will be evidence by increase in pupil confidence in making decisions which affect their learning and wellbeing. 2 Becoming a sustainable rights - respecting School is included in the school s strategic planning. Policies and practice are reviewed with reference to the CRC. 3 The school effectively promotes the values and principles of the CRC. Review school policies to ensure appropriate reference is made to CRC. Focus on one Article each month Assembly/Together Time Regular monitoring and evaluation of RRS targets set in School Improvement Plan (SIP). Page 1 of 7 The school will have progressed along the route to achieving RRSA Level 1. Head Teacher June 2015 School policy documents reflect principles and values of RRS. Whole school community will be aware of key policies within the school and how they are underpinned by strong values. Whole School June 2015 Pupils are fully aware of CRC and the monthly focussed article. Pupils will be able to talk about these articles and how this relates to and affects their needs.
2 4 The school uses the CRC to inform and add value to its work within the school, local, UK and global communities. 5 School leadership promotes global citizenship and sustainable development, guided by the values and principles of the CRC in assemblies and at least two curriculum areas. Promote values and principles through school website and newsletter. Updated RRS notice board. Notice board/school website updated to reflect how school contributes to local, UK and global communities. This will also be included in monthly newsletters where appropriate. HT and committee focus on one Articles each month leading Assembly/Together Time. This will be done involving a variety of curricular areas but in particular Health and Wellbeing, Literacy, and expressive arts. Continue to support World Vision and make decisions about how to donate monies gathered. Whole School February 2015 School community will have an increased awareness of values and principles of UNCRC. Evidence in minutes of meetings, Together Time agendas, newsletters, notice board and RRS record of achievement book. Whole school community fully aware of the value of the month and the monthly RRS focus. Notice board will display work that has been covered locally and globally e.g. MacMillan Nurses, Red Nose Day, World Vision, Fair-trade etc. Whole School June 2015 Pupils have a greater understanding of the Articles. Pupils on RRS committee will develop leadership skills as they lead monthly Together Time sessions. Pupils across the school will feel confident that they have contributed to global citizenship by support a variety of meaningful projects such as World Vision. Evidence found as detailed in 3) above. 3 Standard B: The whole school community learns about the CRC The Convention is made known to children and adults. 4 8 Assemblies, displays and at least two curriculum areas provide effective opportunities for learning about the CRC. Update notice board to reflect monthly Together Time focus. RRS scrap book provides evidence of how the school is addressing RRSA. Together Time will be led by pupils from the RRS committee and this will involve activities which will involve children in talking and listening, reading and writing, drama and art and health and wellbeing making decisions and working cooperatively with others. Committee School Assistant June 2015 Pupils will be able to talk confidently about RRS articles and how these impact them directly and how they have made decisions which have impacted their school experiences. Committee members will be developing their sense of responsibility in keeping the RRS achievement / evidence scrap book up to date. 9 The CRC is included in teaching and learning about all citizenship matters including global citizenship and sustainable development. Assemblies and Together Time highlight how school supports citizenship in local community, UK and global citizenship e.g. local and national charities, Fair trade, Eco schools. Develop sustainable practices committee to explore and share options with whole school. Committee/Head Teacher Whole School June 2015 Monthly RRS Together Time will ensure that pupils and staff learn about local and global citizenship and in contributing to decisions about which projects to develop and how this will be carried out. 5 Standard C: The school has a rights-respecting ethos Young people and adults collaborate to develop and maintain a rights-respecting school community, based on the CRC, in all areas and in all aspects of school life. Whole school community April 2015 Everyone across the school will understand that they are role models for each other in terms of using rightsrespecting language and behaviour. 12 The majority of young people and adults adhere to the standards agreed in their charters. Class teacher monitor if pupils and adults adhere to agreed class/playground and lunch hall charters. Class Teachers HT Pupils April 2015 Everyone across the school will demonstrate a commitment to adhering to the standards agreed in their charters. Behaviour tracking will show that pupils behaviour is very good. Page 5 of 7
6 13 Young people and adults in the school learn how the values and principles of the CRC help to create a safe and healthy environment. Nearly all young people say they usually feel safe at school. Make whole school community aware of CRC values and principles which reflect school values. Annual questionnaire responses from parents and pupils Staff and pupil evaluation of SIP meeting targets set. Annual Child Protection training for all staff. GIRFEC training for teaching staff HT April 2015 Pupils and adults feel safe and describe the school as a nurturing environment. All members of the school community express that they feel valued and that they are encouraged to make a positive contribution to the school. Evidence in feedback from questionnaires, training records of staff/in-service minutes. 14 The majority of young people and adults respect each other s needs and interests and make responsible and reasoned judgements on moral dilemmas. 15 The school develops an environment where young people and adults use the values and language of the CRC to help them become rights-respecting global citizens. Continue to involve pupils in making decisions which affect their education and health and wellbeing on a regular planned/unplanned basis. Whole school community to model rights respecting language and behaviours. Whole school community understand how using the language and values and principles of CRC will help them become rights-respecting global citizens. Continue to contribute to local and national issues including Fair trade, Eco Schools, World Vision and look to develop a partnership with a school in Africa. Whole school April 2015 Pupils and staff across the school model the school s values and demonstrate respect for each other and their opinions. January 2015 The ethos across the school is an inclusive, active one with pupils and staff fully aware of the CRC and how this relates directly to them as their role as teachers/pupils. 7 Standard D: Children are empowered to become active citizens and learners Every child has the right to say what they think in all matters affecting them and to have their views taken seriously. Young people develop the confidence, through their experience of an inclusive rights-respecting school community, to play an active role in their own learning and to speak and act for the rights of all to be respected locally and globally. This practice is embedded in the ethos and life of the school so we will endeavour to build upon this. 16 Most young people hold clear views about their learning and well-being. They are encouraged and supported to express their views appropriately and are involved in decisions which affect their lives in school. N/A N/A Pupils continue to be encouraged to take an active part in the life of the school in making decisions which affect the direction the school is going in order to secure improvements. 17 Young people have access to information which enables them to make informed decisions about their learning, health and well-being. This is embedded in the ethos and life of the school so we will endeavour to build upon this. N/A N/A Pupils continue to have access to information which supports them in making decisions and contributing to the life of the school. 18 Some children are involved in taking action to improve the lives of children locally and globally. All pupils involved in taking action to improve lives of children locally and nationally. We support local charities as well as national charities. Make positive links with a school in Africa N/A N/A Pupils will continue to make decisions about which projects the school supports annually and will be able to talk about the impact of these projects on themselves and global citizens and on their future commitment.
