Madagascar / Student 1 Basic questions Which university did you attend? University of Antananarivo (Madagascar) Did you have a choice of universities to attend, and if so why did you choose the school you attended? I had not because it is the only one in the capital in my country. Describe the university briefly. The categories below seem interesting to me, but please also provide any other details or stories that you feel are interesting. The more the better. How many students attend Size of classes (how many students per classroom) Where students live Whether the university is selective or open to all Whether students are local or from all over the country (or from other countries) How easy it was to talk with your professors What your professors were like What the facilities were like: were there computers, were the classrooms crowded, was the library good, etc. Whether you had internet access % male vs. female students % of students studying technical fields (math, science, engineering) At the first year of my undergraduate school we were about 300 students to attend the lecturers, after we became 180 and in third year we were 80 and in the fourth year we were 40. And the classroom was big enough but the accommodation was not adequate. The students coming from the others regions not from the capital they live a bit far from the university. If I talk about my professors in general some of them are close to their students but in general there is a barrier between professors and students. The internet in my country was so low and we also had only 8 computers for 300 students! Female students were very rare about 10% among students studying technical fields, but in the other fields they were as numerous as males. But this technical field does not have many students the number of students is inversely proportional to the study level. Madagascar / Student 1 1

Obstacles to attending university How much did it cost each year to attend your university? In fact we must pay only the inscription at the beginning of the academic year, about 20$ What are the most common reasons, in your opinion, that secondary school graduates in your country do NOT continue on to university? Secondary school graduates do not continue on to university because they are poor and they need to work to help their parents. And there also are not enough universities. Did you personally overcome any obstacles in attending university? Sincerely for me it was not very hard because I live in town and my parents always encouraged me to go further with my study so it was roughly all right for me. University education quality Do you feel your university prepared you adequately for graduate school? Yes and no. Yes because I cannot say that all my lecturers were bad; some of them help me so much and I am thankful for that! And no, because some of them neglect their students and do not give the right amount of lectures that students expect and need. What do you think you learned well at university? At the university I have learned well the Algebra, Differential Calculus and Complex Analysis. What do you wish you d learned better? I wish to learn more about computing and programming. In general, describe some positive features of your university In my university I learned to be independent because to succeed you must search by yourself and that is positive for my future. Describe some negative features In my university, we do not listen to students, the lecturers hold the power in their hands and they can do what they want. Do a significant fraction of your university s students drop out without graduating? If so, what are the factors that cause people to drop out? Yes many of students drop out because they lost faith and they gave up; the exam is very hard. Second they thought that they wasted their time staying there so they preferred doing something else like business. Madagascar / Student 1 2

Post-university What did you do after university & before [ ]? for how long? I came directly to [ ] because I have just finished my honors degree in August Was this your ideal career choice, and if not, what would you have preferred to do, and what were the obstacles to getting your desired employment or training? My ideal career of choice is becoming lecturer in order to help young Malagasy students, and also working in firms to apply the mathematics knowledge that I have required. Did many of your friends at university go on to graduate school or professional degrees, or would that be a very unusual choice? As I have already said the number of student decreases the higher the degree level was. So most of them did not go on to graduate. [ ] benefit and future plans Please describe what you gained from attending [ ] I can say my dream as African student, I can deepen here my knowledge. There is no barrier between me and my lecturers. What can I expect more? You know in Malagasy students cases, many of them really want to learn and they need help, they need a hand but no one offers so they give up. And for me it is an window opened for another future which will be better and hopeful. Has attending [ ] changed your goals and career opportunities? My goals are always to go further with my study and after to help young people who really need a hand. [ ] does not change that, it strengthens it. About my career opportunities, I can say without hesitation yes! What could [ ] do better? I think [ ] must be extended all around the African continent. What will (did) you do immediately after [ ]? I will go on with my Msc. What do you expect to be doing in 10 years? After 10 years I hope that I have done my Phd and I get a post in one university, maybe in my country maybe outside, but what I am sure of is that after 10 years I can help students in their studies. Madagascar / Student 1 3

If you are not planning to go back to your home country, what would have to change to make you want to go back? My country needs me and if all people who study outside won t go back, who will be there to get out the poverty? Policy If you were appointed the head of the education department in your country, what changes would you argue for? I argue for the students rights to receive good education and to be considered. I argue also for developing technical fields. I argue for helping students who study hard and clever to go on with their studies. Could international donors help make those changes happen? How? Yes, international donors can help as [ ] has done in Madagascar. [ ] works directly with one of our lecturer and the lecturer gives the opportunity to all his students to apply and helps us. Often, when there are some funding it is not the student who deserves this who gets this but the student who knows important people. If you were invited to UNESCO to make a presentation about how the U.N. should help African higher education, what would you ask for? (Please be somewhat realistic here!) I ask for helping students to have easy access for finding scholarships. For example, the UNESCO must do the selection of the applications directly without passing through the Malagasy government. How representative are you? Did your mother & father attend university? Your siblings? My father attended university and my siblings do not go there, they studied in private institutes. When you were a child, did you (and your parents) assume that you would attend university? and if not, what made you decide to go? When I was a child my parents did not want me to study there because of the education system there is linked with government policy and often the lecturers went on strike and Madagascar / Student 1 4

there was no lecture. But after I do love mathematics and the only school that I can go to study maths was the university. Did most of your secondary school classmates go on to university? No must of them went to private institute. Were you one of the top students at your university? What fraction of your classmates at university could cope with a program at the level of [ ]? Yes, I was one of the top. 90% Anecdotes Please tell me a story (or stories) about your university that is especially revealing. Choose whatever you want, and write as much as you want. For example, some ideas from my own university experience include a professor who was especially meaningful or helpful, a frustrating experience trying to register for classes, a friend who had to leave school, and an experience doing research with a professor. I will talk about one story of my life. During the fourth year of my university, we have one lecturer and he said that he needed more money to take care of his family because the government did not give him enough. So for this reason, he was always late and he did not give us tutorial. Time passed through, and then the exam approached. I was afraid because it was the first time in my life that I attended a lecture such that I pray before doing my exam I succeeded my exam but my transcripts were not so good. And one thing that I will never forget is that when we attended our bachelors we know that just few of us will succeed and we know also that with one of our lecturer, in general everybody will get bad notes. And it was very challenging to get a bachelors in our country so I remembered the day that I was at the university and I was waiting for the result and I did not take lunch because we have heard that the results will be sorted of list. And then when it came I succeeded but most of us have failed so it was hard. Madagascar / Student 1 5
