1 HARVARD UNIVERSITY Sinclair Kennedy Traveling Fellowships Frank Knox Memorial Traveling Fellowships Frederick Sheldon Traveling Fellowships Australian Graduate Research Scholarships Lurcy Traveling Fellowships Academic Year PURPOSE: Kennedy, Knox and Sheldon Traveling Fellowships were established to support a full academic year (September- May) of research or study abroad for Harvard graduate students and graduates of Harvard's graduate and professional schools. Fellowship recipients are required to live at their research or study destinations for the length of the academic year. These fellowships are not intended to support multiple trips to research destinations for students who are based in Cambridge or elsewhere in the United States during the year. They are not available to support project periods of less than an academic year. Fellowships were $24,000 for the current academic year. The amount is likely to be similar for the coming academic year. The terms of the different fellowships stipulate the following: SINCLAIR KENNEDY FELLOWSHIPS Kennedy Fellowships support research at destinations outside of the United States. Students enrolling at foreign universities are not eligible for these funds. FRANK KNOX MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIPS Knox Fellowships support research and/or study in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the United Kingdom. Applicants must be citizens of the United States. FREDERICK SHELDON FELLOWSHIPS Sheldon Fellowships support research, study and/or travel abroad or within the United States (although not at Harvard University). While the Sheldon Fellowship permits travel in the United States, the primary intention of this fellowship is to help students spend an academic year abroad. Preference is given to students who have or will have a Harvard degree at the time of the fellowship. AUSTRALIAN GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS Australian Graduate Research Scholarships are awarded to Harvard doctoral students to support a full academic year of research and/or fieldwork in Australia. The research must relate directly to the student's doctoral thesis and scholarship recipients are required to live at their research destination for the entire academic year. GSAS LURCY TRAVELING FELLOWSHIPS These are awarded to GSAS students to conduct research on a topic that is uniquely French and available only in France. Please note: the Lurcy Trust has just announced that it will give strong preference to projects with "contemporary relevance." They elaborate by saying that the project should relate to "a world which is ever changing at an increasingly dynamic pace." The stipend is now $25,000.

2 ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS Students currently registered in any of the graduate or professional schools at Harvard are eligible to apply if they have completed at least one full year of graduate study at the time of their application. Students in their first year of graduate study at Harvard are not eligible to apply. Preference is given to United States citizens. In cases where non- U.S. citizens are considered, the fellowships will not be awarded for travel to that student's home country. Recipients must obtain the approval of the Committee on General Scholarships if they wish to accept other grants or fellowships during the same period. Fellows may not hold other grants or fellowships for the same period without this approval. The Committee on General Scholarships reserves the right to decrease the amount of an award if fellows have received other funding for the same time period. Funds are not renewable or deferrable. Fellowship funds are not intended to support the dependents of a fellow and additional funding to support dependents is not available. QUALIFICATIONS Candidates for the Kennedy, Knox, and Sheldon Traveling Fellowships and the Australian Graduate Research Scholarships are evaluated by the following criteria: Outstanding academic record; Standing in the academic department and graduate or professional school; Feasibility and quality of the proposed research, study, or travel; Unique personal characteristics or non-academic contributions by the candidate. APPLICATION FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE FELLOWSHIPS Under a standard procedure we have joined the Lurcy application process to the Kennedy, Knox and Sheldon, and just a single application form and accompanying application materials will allow students to be considered in all of these competitions. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Candidates may not apply directly to the Committee on General Scholarships. They should complete the following application materials and submit them to their department administrator by the departmental deadline. Fellowship Application Form Statement of Purpose (double spaced) Project Budget Project Timeline Curriculum Vitae Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which should be from a member of the Harvard faculty Official transcripts from all graduate programs NOMINATION PROCEDURES FOR CANDIDATES IN SEEKING DEPARTMENT NOMINATION If you meet the eligibility and other criteria described above, then you should: (a) prepare the required proposal or statement as described above; (b) seek required letters of recommendation as early as possible, submitting a copy of your proposal to the letter writer; and (c) instruct letter writers to submit letters to the appropriate department administrator by the departmental deadline and verify that this has been done once the deadline has been reached. DEADLINE FOR CANDIDATES Submit all required materials, as noted, to the department on the date designated by the department.

3 NOMINATION PROCEDURES FOR DEPARTMENTS Graduate and professional schools are asked to screen their fellowship applicants and submit a single ranked list of its nominees for these five fellowships to the Committee on General Scholarships. In nominating and ranking its applicants, each school should consider the qualifications criteria listed above and provide the Committee with an assessment of its nominees in relation to these criteria. Since nominations and rankings depend on an evaluation of all required materials (statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, transcripts), departments should set a deadline for students to submit the required materials, allowing the departments sufficient time to meet the final deadline of Friday, December 9, Once the required materials have been submitted, the nominating procedure may vary according to the size of department and the size of the eligible candidate pool. In some cases, a committee is formed; in others, the determination is made through informal consultation. The following are some considerations for making assessments: (a) overall academic record and relative standing in the department, (b) feasibility of the proposal, and (c) outstanding personal characteristics of the candidate. Please do not forward a separate ranked list for each of the five fellowships. Nominees for the five fellowships are considered by the Selection Committee as a single group. Schools should evaluate and rank candidates for the traveling fellowships in general, rather than as candidates for specific traveling fellowships. As an innovation, this submission should be done electronically, by scanning all the application materials for each candidate and submitting each as a single pdf file, naming the file with the applicant s name, and sending each file via Accellion secure file transfer to the address below. Please include your name on each page and your original signature at the end of the statement. c. Project Budget. Please include a simple project budget outlining major expenses (travel, housing, food, local transportation, research costs, etc.) and possible sources of income. d. Project Timeline. Please include a simple project timeline including your estimated date of departure, estimated length of stay at your destination, any anticipated visits to the U.S. or elsewhere, and estimated date of return to the United States. If your project will require more than one travel destination, please expand the timeline to include all segments of your travel. e. Official transcripts from all graduate programs. Harvard University grade reports may be submitted in place of official Harvard transcripts for all internal Harvard fellowship competitions. To access your grade report, go to and sign in using your ID and PIN. Click on Campus Resources. Under FAS Academics, click on Online Student Record. Transcripts from other universities must include the seal of the institution and the signature of the registrar or appropriate official, and photocopies are not acceptable. f.
