A simple challenge this week, have a hike! Doesn t matter where or for how long, just get out there and do it. Oh, it would be cool if you stopped along the way and sang a good loud Happy Birthday Planning: Six Meeting What distance do you want to hike What time have you to hike What is the Pack capable of Pick the location What to wear What to pack Preparation: Kit and food list Route Time and distance Departure and return times
Do: Pick a time, date and location for your hike. Select a route Create a kit list Check the weather Go on the hike Sing happy birthday Have FUN!!! 6 Week 3: History The Activity: Cub Pack History Who is leading the activity? Isobel Which SPICES will we use? Intellectual Which Travel Cards could we use? Isobel's Blue Travel Card - Isobel likes to learn in creative ways. Turas- Make a list of things you d like to know about your Scout Group Taisteal- Make a list of people who might be able to answer these questions Tagann- Help your six to decide on which questions to ask, and make an invitation for someone to come and talk to the pack Plan Hi I m Isobel. I love to learn in new and creative ways. I love to work as part of a team and I m also creative so I ve found a fun way for us to learn about the history of our cub pack Planning: Six Meeting In our sixes, we can think up questions we would like to ask the person we ll invite. We can come up with a list of people who might be able to answer our questions. We can make a list of other things we d like to know about or see, old photos, neckers, uniforms or badges. We can ask about other cub packs close by as well.
Do: Sixers work out a way to invite a person, or two, to the den the next night, for instance by making a card and including some of the questions. When the person comes the next week, everyone can sit around and listen. Scribes for the sixes make notes. Sixers are the hosts for the evening Review: The sixes discuss what they found most interesting about getting someone to come and tell them about scouting. Did we have fun? How much has scouting changed? What stayed the same? What else could we have asked? Who else could we invite? Isobels Blue Travel card. The Way I Learn Did I suggest a question? Did I learn anything about being a cub scout by listening to how scouting has changed? Did I help everyone to be a part of planning the night?
Week 4: Community The Activity: Community Activity litter pick Who is leading the activity? Conor Which SPICES will we use? Character Which Travel Cards could we use? Conor s Grey Travel Card Conor cares about protecting the environment.. Turas- Help out in the clean-up Taisteal- Take on a job- QM, First-Aider, Photographer Tagann- Make sure everyone has a job to do and knows how to do it. Plan My name is CONOR, a cub of good CHARACTER even if I do say so myself! I m also the Sixer of the Atlantic Six. My challenge to you is to go out and do something for your community. How about a litter pick? Just grab some bags and gloves and tidy up an area near you. A local playground is a good idea, you can have a go on the swings! Planning: Six Meeting In our sixes we are going to discuss why it s a good idea to keep the place we live in clean. The scribe will make a note of our reasons! We will need to make a list of what things we need to bring on a litter pick; bag, gloves, hi-vis, even picker-uppers if we can get some. This will be the quartermaster s job in each six. Get a scouter to help! The first-aider for each six will prepare a short safety lesson about how to stay safe when we pick up rubbish.
The pack will pick a place to do the clean-up: the local beach, playground or woodland trail, for instance. Set a time and a date to do the clean-up! Have you decided on a fun activity to do as well, play on the playground, or get an ice-cream as a reward? Top Tip: Sometimes local councils give grants or equipment for people to pick up rubbish. They can also come by and collect the rubbish bags at the end! Can a scouter make contact for you? Do: Meet at the agreed time and place, and spend one hour doing the clean-up. First-aider in each six makes sure everyone knows how to stay safe during the clean-up! Make sure to get some photos of the work you do! Get your reward Review: How much litter did we collect? Did everything work well? What would we do differently on our next clean-up? Did everyone like the job they had? Could we send photos into the local paper? Conor s Grey Travel Card What I stand for Did I help to clean up? How did I help on the clean up? Did I do my (QM, First-Aid) job well? Did I make sure that everyone knew what their jobs were, and did them well?
Week 5: Poster The Activity: Poster Review Who is leading the activity? Eva Which SPICES will we use? Emotional Which Travel Cards could we use? Eva s Purple Card Eva likes to write things down and listen to others! Turas- make my mark on the poster Taisteal- do my job well (QM, Scribe, photographer), draw something pirate themed Tagann- support the other cubs in drawing, and waiting their turn. Plan EVA here, I m very interested in the EMOTIONAL side of things, how the things we do can make us feel different ways. I m also the scribe for the Atlantic Six so for my challenge I d like you to make up a poster showing the challenges you have done so far and how you felt doing them. You could do a giant one for the whole pack or maybe each Six could do their own? Don t forget to send me photos! Planning: As a pack we can decide on a large poster or one for every six. In our sixes the sixer makes sure everyone suggests an idea to include on the poster. The scribe takes down ideas. Maybe think about how to decorate the poster. Not everyone will be able to work on the poster at once, even in the six, so let s plan a game to keep everyone happy: we could play a game of Pictionary to test out everyone s drawing skills!
Figure out what materials (paper, markers, paint and so on) we ll need. The QM will organise these. Decide on the order people will work on the poster Do: Everyone gets a turn to put something on the poster. It can be a picture showing what they did over the last few weeks, a sentence or a decoration for the poster itself. At the end, put a tick next to the favourite thing you did! Remember to take a photo to send to the Atlantic Six! Review: What was my favourite activity? Which drawing was the best/funniest? Eva s Purple Card Show Feelings Did I make a contribution to the poster? How did I enjoy doing my job? Did I help every cub feel included?
Week 6: Scouts Own The Activity: Scouts Own Celebration Who is leading the activity? Seán Which SPICES will we use? Spiritual Which Travel Cards could we use? Seán s Orange Card Sean likes to ask questions and think about how he is getting on in Cubs Turas- think about what I ve learned about being a Cub Scout Taisteal- talk about what I am grateful for as a Cub Scout Tagann- reflect on my journey as a Cub Scout and what I want to get from Scouting. Plan Hello there, I m SEAN and I m known as the Spiritual cub. Mine is the final challenge so well done on getting this far. I d really like it if you were to hold a Scouts Own and chat about all of the challenges. Did you have fun, learn anything new? It would be nice to do this with dimmed lights and maybe a few candles. Hey, anyone think it would be possible to light 100 night-lights? Planning: As a pack we should discuss how we got on in our sixes over the six weeks, what we learned and why it is important sometimes to look back and remember our history in scouting. In each six, we can talk about what we liked and didn t like about the celebrations. Every six can come up with an idea about how make a small ceremony to remember all the people who have been Cubs since Scouting began.
First-aider will explain fire safety around the night lights for every cub. Do: Have a short ceremony, with the den lights down. Scribe in each six says one thing the six learned doing the celebration. QM distributes a night light to every cub. Each Sixer makes sure the cubs move as a six. Each six walks up to a central candle lighting. As each Cub takes a light, they are reminded by the Seconder that they take symbolically some of the knowledge built up by Cubs and Scouters over 100 years. The light, like the knowledge, does not grow dim, but instead there is more light in the room now. There is more knowing when we share our knowledge too. QMs take charge of one letter each in the word CUBS and the night lights are used to spell the word out. Cubs can return for a second nightlight. The Seconders can tell them that the cubs are symbolising that they can return to learn more as well, building up their own understanding. Once the word CUBS is spelled with 100 nightlights, take photos and send them to the Atlantic Six! If the sixes have suggested other ideas, make sure to include them too!
Review: Was this a fun thing to do? Did I learn about being a Cub Scout by being a part of this Scout s Own Seán s Orange Card Beliefs Scout? What have I learned about being a Cub What am I grateful for as a Cub Scout? What is important to me as a Cub Scout and what do I want Scouting to teach me?
