Curriculum Policy Dated: October 205 Date ratified by Governors: November 205 To be reviewed: October206 Person responsible: D Burton
Curriculum Statement The curriculum at Sir John Thursby Community College has been developed to provide a broad and balanced learning experience for all our students. With an ethos of personalisation to meet the needs of each individual, we aim to make learning a positive experience and prepare students for the next steps in their education. Learning opportunities, curriculum choices and the use of new technologies will be innovative and inclusive, so encouraging our students to be motivated and engaged. These experiences will extend beyond the taught curriculum to enrich the lives of all our students. Whilst meeting the requirements of a National Curriculum, the emphasis at Key Stage is to develop confident self-learners who enjoy their studies and are therefore well prepared for further progression. Citizenship, PSHE and Careers Education will develop a rounded learning experience for all students. By the end of KS, students will have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to embark on KS4 studies. The curriculum priorities at Key Stage 4 are to provide learning pathways suitable to the interests, abilities and future aspirations of our students. Students are expected to reach and exceed their academic potential regardless of the route they follow. Through thoughtful personalisation of the curriculum we aim to equip every student with the skills and qualifications necessary for their future challenges. Curriculum Structure The taught curriculum is structured around 0 lessons of 50 minutes duration each week with an additional lesson (period 7) on Wednesdays for Year 0 to provide for enrichment studies and allow all students to access an Ebacc education. Double lessons of 00 minutes duration are encouraged where possible to maximise learning and reduce cost and time during lesson changeover. A blend of mixed ability and setted teaching is used throughout Key Stages and 4 depending on the subject style of delivery and the need to maximise student progress. Where possible, the curriculum is arranged to allow for free movement between sets so learning is matched to individual needs. Key Stage covers Years 7and 8 with Key Stage 4 occupying the remaining secondary years 9, 0 and. The priority in lower school is to develop a skills based curriculum which prepares students for the rigours of examination based subjects in Key Stage 4. In upper school students are challenged to meet or exceed expectations with an emphasis on all students aiming to achieve level two qualifications. All students will be expected to study the Ebacc subjects, thus preventing any lack of opportunity in their future studies. The Key Stage Curriculum In Year 7 the priority is integration into the secondary curriculum and builds on the learning skills and enjoyment from primary school. Recognising the different learning styles between these two phases, there is a well developed transition programme delivered throughout Year 7. This
programme develops the skills students need to become independent, self-motivated, cooperative and successful learners. Students are assessed in the first half term and placed in ability groups in English, Maths, Science and MFL. Other curriculum areas are free to organise grouping to maximise learning in their subjects (i.e. setted, partially setting or mixed ability). In setted subjects, movement up/down is encouraged to instil an ethos of challenge and reward. A Progress and Guidance Leader, Year 7 Support Manager, Learning Support staff, Ethnic Language Support staff, Learning Mentors and Peer Mentors are used to support transition throughout Year 7. Specific learning needs are identified at an early stage with appropriate support being delivered or identified. An active Able and Talented programme supports the needs and challenges of identified students. : tuition is used widely to give early intervention for those identified as falling behind in English and mathematics. Literacy development builds on the good work completed in Key Stage 2. A targeted reading scheme (Acceleread) is a dedicated programme used to enhance reading skills and assess comprehension of all Year 7 and 8 students. In addition, literacy specific lessons are delivered by the English department and additional curriculum time has been given to support this. All Year 7 students are tested for their literacy skills on entry to Sir John Thursby Community College and reassessed in Year 8 to monitor their progress. A Local Curriculum programme threads throughout Years 7 and 8 to deliver important aspects of Citizenship, RE, PSHE and Careers guidance through drop down days, allowing for delivery by outside agencies and experts in specific fields of these areas of the curriculum. The taught curriculum is supported in Key Stage by a Home Extended Learning Programme [HELP]. This replaces traditional homework with learning tasks designed to reinforce, challenge, develop new learning and be assessable so progress of students can be further monitored. For Curriculum allocation at Key Stage see Annex A. The Key Stage 4 Curriculum The Key Stage 4 curriculum meets statutory requirements and is designed to be broad and balanced but flexible enough to meet the changing needs of students and respond to local and National initiatives. On offer is a carefully selected blend of academic and vocational courses which are available to all students. Only courses with a clear progression route to Post 6 are considered. There are over 40 options available to students, allowing for a truly personalised curriculum to meet individual needs and aspirations.
A well planned CEIAG and delivered programme is in place to support students in choosing the most appropriate route for them in upper school and facilitate ambitious progression on leaving at 6. All students complete a two week work placement in Year 0. The timetable is based on a 0 x 50 minute lesson structure with curriculum leaders being encouraged to use 00 minute teaching blocks where possible. With the addition of an extra teaching period (period 7) on Wednesdays, Year 0 are able to study an additional enrichment course which allows for more option choices, the chance to study subjects for the love of learning, trialling of new and innovative subjects and this often results in additional qualifications. Enrichment time is also used to deliver Ebacc subjects to students who are better suited to a vocational pathway in KS4, thus allowing them to study subjects appropriate to their needs but still offering the opportunity to their needs but still offering the opportunity to complete a full Ebacc curriculum. In Year, additional teaching time is devoted to English and maths to further improve 5 A* - C (EM) performance. The Key Stage 4 curriculum structure comprises of: Core subjects: English, maths, core science, RE, PE, citizenship and careers. Compulsory: A language, ICT and a second science. Vocational options: 7 in-house vocationally based programmes. Science/technology: Triple award science is available to students considered suitable. Technology based options are available to all students. Options Blocks: 8 options on offer (9 per block). Enrichment: 4 courses available. Including MFL and Humanities for those following a curriculum based curriculum. The EBacc suite of qualifications is on offer to all students and recommended as an option to those likely to need a broad, academic suite of qualifications in the future. However all students will be expected to complete a POS which leads to an Ebacc suite of subjects. See Annex B for details of Key Stage 4 Curriculum Plan. A Foundation Learning (FL) Curriculum is well developed and offers a viable route Post 6 with local further education establishments. This programme is offered to carefully selected students who would otherwise be at risk of progressing with no formal qualifications and are likely NEET candidates in the future. An access Foundation Learning Structure allows students to mix and match between FL and the main college curriculum.
Triple award science is encouraged for those intending to study A Level sciences; this is offered in double award time. Computing is delivered as an option to all students and strongly encouraged to those who may continue this subject in the future. Apprenticeships are discussed and encouraged for students likely to benefit from this route into employment in the future. The Careers Co-ordinator holds : interviews with all students in upper school where progression routes are discussed in detail. A well established Personalised Curriculum is available to students who are considered to be at risk for a variety of reasons. This programme often involves a work placement, functional skills studies with access to the college curriculum where appropriate. Curriculum Enrichment, Extension & Study Support In an area of high social depravation, it is vital our taught curriculum is enriched with a wide range of experiences to give our students improved life chances. The environmental and rural area is a significant feature of the college ethos which has been developed to support both the taught and enrichment curriculum. These areas are maintained by students studying Horticulture and the Environment and Land Based Diploma as well as the FL curriculum group. Students are encouraged to support these areas through Open Curriculum days and clubs. Student enrichment events are widespread and involve academic, social, community and support activities. These are grouped under the headings of: Thursby Thursday Club for Yr7 Students Individual one-off events Periodic/Annual events Ongoing clubs and activities Career pathways and enterprise Lunchtime activities Community cohesion Able and Talented enrichment programme A full list of enrichment events can be found in the Curriculum Enrichment booklet. Able and Talented/Aim Higher students are identified at an early stage on entry to the college and as part of an ongoing programme. These students are supported both within the classroom, with
learning programmes tailored to their specific needs, and through extensive enrichment provision to encourage high aspirations at school and in their future careers. Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) Sir John Thursby Community College is committed to improving the life chances of our students. We work very closely with Lancashire County Council Young Peoples Service to deliver an individually tailored programme of CEIAG that helps with opinion forming and has an emphasis on informed inclusion as well as working to break social and gender stereotypes regarding routes of study and careers. The college has a well-resourced careers room Bright Futures. This facility is open all day on a drop-in basis for students to access books, college and training provider prospectus and to receive impartial CEIAG. Every student is interviewed on at least one occasion in Year to advise on progression routes, careers and to ensure that students are applying for a relevant course of study. When deemed necessary students are advised to apply for more than one course of study as a backup. Further personalised advice is given to targeted students depending on the outcomes of these interviews. Progression of students is carefully monitored and any outstanding NEET s followed up appropriately. The college also subscribes to the Lancashire Interactive programme and the Kudos and U-Explore programmes for which every student has their own password. Awareness raising evenings are arranged in college, there is an Open Evening in October where students in Years 0 and can access local colleges, training providers and local employers who offer post 6 apprenticeships. There is a CEIAG event for Year 8 students in March to help with choosing their options as part of the transition from Key Stage to Key Stage 4. These students attend apprenticeship events for those who are interested in taking a vocational route with their studies. Local colleges deliver sessions through PSHE on choosing options in Year 9, Preparing for work experience in Year 0 and for life after school in Year. In Year 0 all students complete two weeks of work experience through Lancashire Via services. The college runs a personalised learning programme in which students can combine part time study along with a work placement. Whole School Curriculum to Support Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural Development Personal, Social, Health & Education (PSHE) The college s policy is to deliver PSHE both through the main curriculum subjects and in a separate course. Areas with responsibilities for the delivery of PSHE specify within their schemes of work
what is being delivered, and how it is being delivered. For example, Sex Education, drugs, healthy eating, etc. in science programme of study. Religious Education Children s education is incomplete without opportunities to consider fundamental questions of human existence and the answers offered by people at different times and in different places. Moral and spiritual dimensions are developed in our students through RE, college assemblies and the values that determine the way our college operates as a community. Fuller details can be found in the college s PSHE and RE Policies. Religious education at Sir John Thursby Community College is delivered in accordance with the principles of the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus. In Years 7 and 8 RE is delivered through the humanities curriculum. In Years 9, 0 and it is delivered through a lessons or a rotation process leading to accreditation. RE full course is also an option choice. Sex Education Sex education takes place within the wider sphere of personal wellbeing within PSHE. Young people need the information and skills to enable them to take responsibility for their own behaviour. Factual information about the physical aspect of sex is important. Equally though, opportunities to discuss and consider the quality of relationships, family life, values and standards. The significance of personal responsibility is stressed throughout. Fuller details of sex education can be found in the college s Sex Education Policy.
