1 GETTING TO KNOW GOD: BIBLE BASICS Week 5: Jesus Is God This includes: Leader Preparation Lesson Guide LEADER PREPARATION BIBLE BASIS In John 1:1, John makes it clear that Jesus has been present since the beginning, before the creation of the world. The fact that John says Jesus was with God makes it clear that he is distinct from the Father, but then John says that Jesus was God, also making it clear that Jesus is fully divine. In verse 14, John points out that God himself came in the flesh a human being with all the struggles and temptations we face. These verses can help children realize that Jesus revealed the glory of God himself to people on earth. God has done it all for us. Use this lesson to help kids realize that Jesus is God. DISCOVERY POINT Jesus is God. BIBLE FOCUS John 1:1, 14 KEY VERSE In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1). TEACHING PREP The short overview below is designed to help you prepare for your lesson. Supplies You ll Need: Getting to Know God: Bible Basics (Year 1/Quarter 1) CD, LIVE Children s Curriculum (Year 1) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, self-stick name tags or large sticky notes, fine-tipped marker, Three In One handout, The Only Way handout, Bibles, empty plastic bottle, ice cube, hot water, funnel, paper, crayons, colored pencils, and pens Before This Lesson Print the Three In One handout. You ll need one copy per team of four kids. Print the The Only Way handout. You ll need one copy per team of four kids. Assemble Bible Exploration Kits (one per four kids): Bible, Three In One handout, The Only Way handout, paper for each child, crayons, colored pencils, pens. On each name tag or sticky note, write a simple occupation for kids to act out (for example, firefighter, teacher, and doctor). You ll need one name tag or note per child. It s OK to repeat occupations if necessary. Heat the water for the first Let s Explore! activity. Review John 1:1, 14. Cue "Into the Bible" (Track 1) on the Getting to Know God: Bible Basics (Year 1/Quarter 1) CD or (Quarter 1/Track 1) on the LIVE Children s Curriculum (Year 1) DVD. Huddle briefly with your volunteers beforehand. Answer any questions they have. Encourage them and pray.

2 PARENT We ve provided you with a Family Devotion handout to send the Bible learning and faith discovery home. When kids and parents have faith discussions regularly, kids faith multiplies. So we ve given you two options: Print the Family Devotion handout and make enough copies for each child to take one home. the Family Devotion to families before or after the actual lesson. Or why not do both? That way you ll double the opportunities for parents to actually get the handout.

Play Into the Bible (Track 1) from the Getting to Know God: Bible Basics (Year 1/Quarter 1) CD or (Quarter 1/Track 1) from the LIVE Children s Curriculum (Year 1) DVD as kids arrive. Into the Bible Makes me wanna jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! Makes me wanna sing! Hallelujah! It s the greatest book. Come and take a look. Makes me wanna shout! Shout! Shout! Shout! Shout! So that everyone will see I m getting into the Bible And the Bible...is getting into me! We re discovering a brand-new world As we dig a little deeper (deeper), Finding out about who God is. 4 2. As kids arrive, place an occupation name tag or sticky note on each child s back without letting the child see it. Have kids form pairs. Explain that kids will play a game of Who Am I? One partner will ask, Who am I? and the other partner will read and silently act out the occupation written on the first partner s back. The first partner will have three chances to guess the occupation. Then partners will switch roles. (Pair older kids with younger nonreaders. If partners finish guessing before time is up, let them form new pairs and play again.) 3. After five minutes, start the Parrot Countdown (Quarter 1/Countdown Track 1) on the LIVE Children s Curriculum (Year 1) DVD, turn up the volume, and lead kids in cheering along. 4. SAY: I m so glad you re here today! What were some of the occupations you just acted out? Let kids shout out answers, and then SAY: Turn to a partner for a quick discussion. ASK: Why was this game easy or hard? How do you tell what someone is like in real life? SAY: Sometimes we get a clue about who someone is from the way the person dresses a firefighter or police officer, for example. Sometimes we can tell who someone is by the things he or she does or says. Today we re going to explore that Jesus is God. Let s get started! LET S EXPLORE! Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits, prepared hot water, ice cube, empty plastic bottle, funnel 1. Form Bible Crews of four kids. Give crews their Bible Exploration Kits, and ask them to take out the Bibles. Say: The Bible is the place to start if you want to answer the question Who is Jesus? Find John 1:1 in your Bibles, and read the Key Verse together to see if you can discover the answer. Give crews a minute or so to read the verse. Then SAY: That verse can be a little confusing at first. This next Scripture will give us more information. Read John 1:14 together. Give crews another minute to read the verse. ASK: Who do you think the Word is? What do these verses tell you about Jesus? SAY: Let s get to the bottom of who Jesus really is! Have groups take the Three in One handout out of their Bible Exploration Kits. Have them read all the text above step number 1. SAY: Let s read John 1:1 out loud together, saying Jesus instead of the Word. Lead kids in saying the verse, substituting Jesus for the Word. ASK: What did you discover about Jesus? SAY: Jesus is God! That s the answer to our question. Let me do the experiment on the handout for you to make sure we all really understand who Jesus is. Gather around me. 2. Have crews gather around you so everyone can see. Do steps 1 and 2 of the Three in One handout.

5 SAY: Wow, that was cool. But what does it mean? Have kids read the rest of the Three in One handout in their groups and then use pens and paper to summarize the verses. After kids finish writing, SAY: Just as water comes in three forms fog, ice, and water God exists in three forms God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. ASK: How did you summarize the verses in your own words? Let crews share what they wrote with the rest of the large group. SAY: Jesus is God, just as the Father and the Holy Spirit are God, too. But there s something really special about Jesus. Let s find out more! 3. Have kids find The Only Way handout in their Bible Exploration Kits. Have kids read the activity together and then use the paper, colored pencils, and crayons in the Exploration Kits to draw pictures to represent the verse, as directed in the activity. 4. After kids finish drawing, let them display and explain their pictures in their crews. SAY: Today we ve discovered that Jesus is God and that he s the only way to the Father. When we believe in Jesus, he s our bridge to God the Father. Jesus makes it possible to be forgiven for our sins and to be God s friend. And because we re forgiven, we can live in heaven someday. Take your picture home with you, and do what the rest of the activity says: Show it to someone else, and explain the verse. Then ask that person to do the same. It s exciting to think how many people might learn about Jesus this week because of you! But right now, let s praise Jesus for being God. Have kids set their pictures aside. LET S PRAISE! Supplies: Getting to Know God: Bible Basics (Year 1/Quarter 1) CD, CD player 1. Have kids in each crew stand in a circle. SAY: Choose one person in your group to start. Pause. Your Starter will say one sentence to thank Jesus for being our bridge to heaven. Then he or she will place an arm on the shoulder of the person to the left to form a bridge. Then that person will say a sentence prayer and keep building the bridge by placing his or her arm on the shoulder of the person to the left. You ll pray all around the circle and build a bridge as you go. When your bridge is complete, your Starter will say, In Jesus name, amen! 2. Play Prayer Time Sound Effects 4 (Track 20) from the Getting to Know God: Bible Basics (Year 1/Quarter 1) CD as the children pray. HIGH FIVES Supplies: Getting to Know God: Bible Basics (Year 1/Quarter 1) CD, CD player 1. When crews have finished their circle prayers, thank kids for coming. Remind them to show their pictures to someone else this week and explain what they learned about Jesus today. SAY: As you leave, give a three-in-one high five. Create it any way you want. You could use three fingers or a two-handed, one-foot high five. Give it to as many people as you can and shout, Jesus is God!

8 2. Play You Are the Messiah (Track 5) from the Getting to Know God: Bible Basics (Year 1/Quarter 1) CD as kids high five and leave. FOR-EXTRA-TIME ACTIVITIES Bridge Building Supplies: paper plates, marshmallows, pretzel sticks Let kids create edible bridges using marshmallows and pretzel sticks as construction material. Make sure you re aware of allergies. Discuss the following questions. Ask: What does it mean to you to know that Jesus is God? How does Jesus act as our bridge to heaven? (Remember that some children have food allergies that can be dangerous. Know your children, and consult with parents about allergies your kids may have. Also, read food labels carefully as hidden ingredients can cause allergy-related problems.) Getting to Know Him Supplies: none Have kids take turns in their Bible Crews reading John 14:1-14 in their Bibles. Then have kids discuss how well they understand Jesus and his teachings. Ask kids how they can get to know Jesus better. Let each crew share its ideas with the other crews, and then ask kids to choose one way to get to know Jesus better this week. Hiding It in Your Heart Supplies: thesaurus Ask Bible Crews to come up with two words that are synonyms (words that mean the same thing coffee and java, for example). Have a thesaurus available for any crews that need help. When crews have finished, have them share their synonyms. Then ask crews to find and read the Key Verse, John 1:1, in their Bibles. SAY: Jesus is God, just as [example of a word crews came up with] is [example of the synonym]. They re the same. Create a Bible Dictionary Supplies: paper, markers, dictionary, CD player, Getting to Know God: Bible Basics (Year 1/Quarter 1) CD Ask kids to create one or more pages, each with a new word, for a Bible dictionary. Have kids suggest words from today s lesson Jesus and God are two suggestions. Have them write each word on a sheet of paper in fun letters, add a definition, list Scripture references, and make illustrations. Play The Books of the Bible Song (Track 8), from the Getting to Know God: Bible Basics (Year 1/Quarter 1) CD while kids work. Add each page to a threering binder, and watch the dictionary grow.
