1 Economic Council of Advisors Co-Chairs: Chrystia Freeland - International Trade Toronto Centre Chrystia Freeland is the Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre, after her by-election victory in November She was born in Peace River, Alberta, and studied at Harvard where she received her undergraduate degree, and continued her studies on a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University. After cutting her journalistic teeth as a Ukraine-based stringer for the Financial Times, Washington Post, and The Economist, Chrystia went on to wear many hats at the Financial Times, including deputy editor, UK news editor, Moscow bureau chief, Eastern Europe correspondent, editor of its weekend edition, and editor of FT.com. Between 1999 and 2001, she served as deputy editor of The Globe and Mail, before becoming a managing editor at the Financial Times. In 2010, Chrystia joined Canadian-owned Thomson Reuters as editor-at-large. She most recently worked as Managing Director and Editor of Consumer News. Chrystia was a weekly columnist for the Globe and Mail, writing extensively about the challenges facing the middle class. Her books include Sale of a Century: The Inside Story of the Second Russian Revolution (2000) and Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else (2012). Chrystia is married and a proud mother of three children, raising them in Toronto Centre. She is a Co-Chair of the Liberal Party s Economic Advisory Council and was appointed the Party s Critic for International Trade in January Hon. Scott Brison - Finance Kings Hants Scott Brison, the Liberal Member of Parliament for Kings Hants (Nova Scotia), has won election to Canada's House of Commons in six general elections: June 1997, November 2000,

2 June 2004, January 2006, October 2008, and May He is a key Liberal Party spokesperson on economic issues and currently serves as the Liberal Party Critic for Finance. He also serves as Vice-Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance. Mr. Brison is a member of the Trilateral Commission and has been named by the World Economic Forum (WEF) of Davos, Switzerland, as one of its "Young Global Leaders." In August 2010, he was awarded the Order of San Carlos by Colombian President Álvaro Uribe in recognition of his contributions to the Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement. He served as Minister of Public Works and Government Services, and Receiver General of Canada, from 2004 to 2006, the youngest member of Prime Minister Paul Martin's Cabinet. He also served on three cabinet committees: Treasury Board, Domestic Affairs, and Expenditure Review. Mr. Brison previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister with special emphasis on Canada-U.S. Relations. He was a candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Party at the December 2006 convention. Mr. Brison has had extensive private sector experience as an entrepreneur and investment banker. He has served as Vice-President of a Canadian investment bank and currently serves as Chairman of SeaFort Capital Inc., a Canadian private equity firm. Mr. Brison and his partner, Maxime St-Pierre, live in Cheverie, Nova Scotia, on the shores of the Minas Basin, home of the world's highest tides. He was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, on May 10, 1967, and in 1989 graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in finance. He has completed the Global Leadership and Public Policy for the 21st Century Executive Education program at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. In his spare time he enjoys economics, foreign policy, sea kayaking, downhill skiing, and growing apples. Other Members of Parliament: Hon. Ralph Goodale - Deputy Leader Wascana Canada s former Finance Minister, Ralph Goodale, is the Member of Parliament for the Reginaarea constituency of Wascana and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. He began this latter role in September of 2010, following more than four years as Liberal Opposition House Leader in the turbulence of a minority Parliament. Mr. Goodale holds the distinction of being selected by his peers as Canada s first-ever Parliamentarian of the Year in 2006.

3 Raised on a family farm near Wilcox, Saskatchewan, and educated at both the University of Regina (BA-71) and the University of Saskatchewan (LLB-72), Ralph Goodale has practical experience in business, agriculture, law, and broadcasting, as well as federal and provincial politics. He was first elected to the Parliament of Canada in 1974 at the age of 24, representing the sprawling rural constituency of Assiniboia. In the 1980s, he served as Leader of the provincial Liberal Party, and was elected to the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly in Mr. Goodale returned to the House of Commons in 1993 as the M.P. for Wascana, and was subsequently re-elected in 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008, and In government for more than 12 years, he served in the federal Cabinet as Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Natural Resources, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, Minister of Public Works, and finally Minister of Finance. During his tenure, Canada recorded strong economic growth, balanced budgets, declining debt, lower taxes, and the best fiscal performance in the western world. Ralph Goodale and his spouse, Pamela, make their home in Regina. Hon. John McCallum - Citizenship and Immigration, Multiculturalism, and Seniors Markham Unionville John McCallum was first elected to the House of Commons in November He was reelected in 2004, 2006, and Mr. McCallum currently serves as the Critic for Citizenship and Immigration, Multiculturalism, and Seniors. Mr. McCallum has previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration, and as a member of the Standing Committee on Finance. He then served as Secretary of State (International Financial Institutions) from January to May From May 2002 to December 2003, he served as Minister of National Defence, and in 2003, as Minister of Veterans Affairs. In July 2004, he was appointed Minister of National Revenue and Chair of the Expenditure Review Committee by Prime Minister Paul Martin. Before entering politics, Mr. McCallum was senior vice-president and chief economist of the Royal Bank of Canada. Mr. McCallum worked as a professor of economics at McGill University ( ), at the Université du Québec à Montréal ( ), at Simon Fraser University ( ), and at the University of Manitoba ( ).

4 He is the author or co-author of eight books or monographs and has written on fiscal and monetary issues, comparative macroeconomic performance of OECD countries, Canada-U.S. economic integration, and other economic issues. A native of Montreal, Mr. McCallum obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Cambridge University, a Diplôme d'études supérieures from the Université de Paris, and a doctorate in economics from McGill University. Mr. McCallum and his wife, Nancy Lim, have three children. Hon. Judy Sgro - Industry York West By serving her neighbours from on the North York City Council, and then from as a member of the Toronto City Council, Judy Sgro worked to foster a solid reputation as a woman of action. Building upon a successful tenure in municipal politics where she served the people of her community as the Vice-Chair of the Toronto Police Services Board, as a member of the North York Council s Executive Committee, and as a contributing member of the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee Judy Sgro wanted to focus her attention towards national solutions to local problems. Her initial election to Parliament for the federal riding of York West in 1999, and her subsequent re-election in 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2011, cemented that reputation and provided her with a way to serve the people of York West on the national stage. Judy Sgro wasted no time once she arrived in Ottawa. From , she was named Chairperson of the Prime Minister s Task Force on Urban Issues. The report derived from those efforts contained numerous insights which helped to shape national urban policy for several years. In addition to serving in roles such as the Chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women, as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and as the Vice-Chair of the Canada/US Parliamentary Friendship Group, Judy Sgro was appointed as the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration in December of As Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Judy championed family re-unification policies and worked hard to ensure the immigration system was fair and compassionate. In Opposition, Judy Sgro served as the Liberal Critic for National Revenue, and as the Liberal Critic for Seniors and Pensions and the Status of Women, where she launched an aggressive effort to help ensure retirement income security, coverage, and adequacy for all Canadians. She currently serves as the Liberal Critic for Industry.

5 Judy Sgro lives in Toronto with her husband where they enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren. Other Members: Miles Corak Miles Corak is a Professor of Economics with the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa. Before becoming a professor, he was a member of the senior management at Statistics Canada. His research focuses on labour markets and social policy, and is detailed in articles he has published on topics dealing with child poverty, access to university education, social and economic mobility, and unemployment. He also runs a blog that is geared towards an audience of engaged citizens who have a curiosity about economics and how it can inform public policy. Blaine Favel Blaine is currently the Chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan as well as the Executive Chairman of One Earth Oil and Gas Inc. He has over 18 years of experience in First Nations business development as an advisor, entrepreneur, and Chief. He has made significant contributions to scholarship, education, public service, and the Canadian public good. He was Chief of the Poundmaker Cree Nation and served as Grand Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations from George Gosbee George F.J. Gosbee is the Chairman and CEO of AltaCorp Capital Inc. He is Vice-Chair of Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo), is on the Board of Directors for TMX Group, and is Chairman of the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary. Mr. Gosbee is the Executive Chairman and a Co-owner of the Phoenix Coyotes, and is on the Board of Governors of the National Hockey League (NHL). He is a former board member of Chrysler Group LLC in Detroit and a former Advisor on the Government of Canada s Economic Advisory Council. Aldéa Landry Aldéa Landry, C.M., P.C., Q.C., is a lawyer and business woman who has been a civil servant with the New Brunswick Department of Justice, a legal practitioner in the Bathurst law firm Tremblay, Landry, Landry, that she co-founded, and a Cabinet Minister and Deputy Premier of New Brunswick in the government of Premier Frank McKenna. She is president of Landal Inc., a consulting firm based in Moncton, New Brunswick, offering integrated services in organizational and business development, and in international cooperation. She is also vice-president of Diversis Inc., a consulting firm specializing in immigration and diversity.

6 Martin LeBlanc Martin LeBlanc is President and CEO of Caprion Proteomics, a leading Montreal-based biotechnology company serving the global biopharmaceutical industry. Martin began his professional career as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company. He then initiated his career as a biotech entrepreneur at Advanced Bioconcept. He is currently a member of the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Chairman of Personalized Medicine Partnership for Cancer, and on the Board of Directors of Cytovance Biologics, Mispro Biotech Services, Montreal Invivo, and the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute. Frank McKenna Frank McKenna is the former Premier of New Brunswick and former Ambassador to the United States of America. He is the owner of Glenwood Kitchens, the largest manufacturer of kitchen cabinets on the East Coast of Canada. He has served on numerous corporate boards, including: General Motors, Shoppers Drug Mart, Air Canada, CanWest Global, Duke Energy, UPS, Xenon Technologies, and Major Drilling. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Canadian Natural Resources and is Chairman of Brookfield Asset Management. Mr. McKenna is a Q.C., an O.C., a former Economic Developer of the Year, a member of the Canadian Information Productivity Awards Hall of Fame, and a recipient of the Red Cross Humanitarian Award. Mr. McKenna is also the recipient of eight honourary degrees and currently serves in the full-time role of Deputy Chair of the TD Bank Group. He and his wife, Julie, have three children. Kevin Milligan Kevin Milligan is Associate Professor of Economics in the Vancouver School of Economics at the University of British Columbia, and is also affiliated with the C.D. Howe Institute and the National Bureau of Economic Research. Since 2011, he has served as Co-Editor of the Canadian Tax Journal. He studied at Queen s University and the University of Toronto, receiving his Ph.D. in His thesis was awarded the 2002 National Tax Association dissertation award. His research spans the fields of public and labour economics, with a focus on the economics of children and the elderly, as well as other tax and labour market policy topics. Mike Moffatt Mike Moffatt is an Assistant Professor in the Business, Economics and Public Policy group at Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario where he teaches courses in international trade and firm-level strategy. An economist by training, Mike s interests relate to the intersection of public policy, economic growth, monetary policy, and business strategy. Mike is a Fellow at the Lawrence National Centre for Policy Management and on the Editorial Board of the Mowat Centre.

7 Bill Morneau As Executive Chairman of Morneau Shepell, the largest Canadian human resources services organization with over 3,300 employees, Bill has led the firm for over two decades to take an integrative approach to health, benefits, retirement, and employee assistance needs. Bill is on the Boards of St. Michael s Hospital Foundation, the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation, the Learning Partnership, the London School of Economics North American Advisory Committee, the Canadian INSEAD Foundation, and Greenwood College. He is past Chair of St. Michael s Hospital, Covenant House in Toronto, and the C.D. Howe Institute. In 2012, he was appointed as Pension Investment Advisor to the Ontario Minister of Finance, providing counsel aimed at facilitating the pooling of public-sector pension fund assets. He also co-authored The Real Retirement, helping Canadians plan for a successful retirement. Alain Paquet Alain is a full professor of economics at the School of Management at the Université du Québec à Montréal, a former Liberal Member of the National Assembly for the riding of Laval-des- Rapides, and State Minister for Finance. He has been much involved in the development of tax, innovation, entrepreneurship, and anti-poverty policies. He is a research scholar on employment and economic fluctuations. He was also a guest consultant for the Bank of Canada, the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, the federal Department of Finance, the federal Department of Human Resources Development Canada, the Central Bank of Madagascar, and the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research. He was a board member of the Quebec Consumers Association. Barbara Stymiest Barbara Stymiest is currently a Corporate Director of BlackBerry Ltd., George Weston Limited and Sun Life Financial Inc. In addition to her corporate responsibilities, she is the Chair of Advisory Board of the Ivey Institute for Leadership, the Vice-Chair of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and serves as a trustee of University Health Network. She has an HBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, and a FCPA from the Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario. Until June 2011, Ms. Stymiest was a member of the Group Executive of the Royal Bank of Canada, which is responsible for the bank s overall strategic direction. Prior to that, she held positions as Chief Executive Officer at TSX Group Inc., Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer at BMO Nesbitt Burns, and Partner of Ernst & Young LLP. She has also served on a number of professional and charitable organizations, including the United Way Campaign Cabinet and the Royal Ontario Museum. Sherri Torjman Sherri is Vice-President of the Caledon Institute of Social Policy. She wrote the welfare series of reports for the National Council of Welfare and has authored four books on disability policy. She has worked for the House of Commons Committee on the Disabled, the House of Commons

8 Committee on Child Care, and the Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies. In 2012, Sherri was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her policy work on caregivers.
