1 Etiler Soroptimist Club Friendship Weekend, Istanbul, October 2016 Meeting: Measuring Social Impacts of Your Economic Empowerment Projects by Theory of Change Principles As SI Etiler Club, we have the great pleasure in inviting all our Soroptimist friends to participate in the Etiler Soroptimist Club Friendship Weekend taking place in Istanbul, Turkey, from October 14th to October 16th, If you are a member of a Soroptimist Club speacialized in economic empowerment of women, or your club has won a best practice award in the field of improving access to economic empowerment and sustainable opportunities for the employment of women, or you are a member of a Soroptimist Club implementing various successfull projects for women then you must join our programme on Measuring Social Impacts of Your Projects accompanied with a wonderful soroptimist friendship weekend.

2 The programme will start with a friendship dinner at a Soroptimist sister's house on the evening of Thursday, October 13th. On Friday 14th, there will be a Turkish Food Cooking Workshop at Balat Culture House taking place during morning & lunch time and you will have the opportunity to watch the Whirling Dervishes Ceremony and have dinner at the Galata Dervishes House Museum at the evening. On Saturday 15th, there will be a full day meeting accompanied by a Friendship Lunch. Optional city tours will be arranged for those interested both on the pre-event and post -event days as well as on Sunday 16th. We are looking forward to welcoming you in Istanbul.

4 MEETING & LUNCH Measuring Social Impacts of Your Economic Empowerment Projects by Theory of Change Principles. During this meeting/workshop you will learn how to measure Social Impacts of Your Economic Empowerment Projects by Theory of Change Principles. Your economic empowerment projects will be analyzed individually and each project will be redesigned in accordance with the "theory of change" principles. Please visit the SIE webpage, where you can find the details of the economic empowerement projects of SIE. As SI Etiler we are especially specialised in this field. Some of our recent Economic Empowerment projects are Weaving Lives & KIMIM.

5 Soroptimists in Etiler and Mardin in Turkey, together with Soroptimists from San Diego in the United States, have since 2005 been running a weaving workshop for illiterate women in Mardin in South-eastern Turkey. Partnering with the Governorship of Mardin and the Mardin Public Training Centre, they train women how to produce handmade carpets. The project also encourages participants to pursue formal education. Several hundred women have so far benefitted from the project. Weaving Lives is a long term project which is being implemented for 11 years. This year we have started another valuable project called, KIMIM- "Vocational Training & Recruitment Center for Women", at Balat Cultural House, which is a very successfull project of SI Turkey. 7 COOKING WORKSHOP AT BALAT Tasting Turkish cuisine is one of the best ways in experiencing Turkish Culture when visiting Istanbul. For those interested, there will be Traditional Turkish Food Cooking Workshop at the Balat Culture House on Friday, 14 October Those attending the Workshop will have the opportunity to learn cooking some examples of Traditional Turkish Cuisine and then to taste the food that they have cooked. The activity will take place at Balat Culture House which itself is worth seeing as a realized dream project of Turkish Soroptimists. Balat, being a very historical district on Golden Horn, and the Soroptimist House, refurnished with the aim of helping women a a cooking school, will make you feel at home. 30 per person including lunch and VAT

8 WHIRLING DERVISHES CEREMONY WHIRLING DERVISHES CEREMONY at GALATA DERVISHES HOUSE MUSEUM including a special Dervishe Dinner 65 per person minimum 60 guests are required Sema (Whirling dervishes ceremony), is the inspiration of Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi ( ) as well as part of the Turkish culture, belief and history in Konya. It symbolizes the different meanings of a mystic cycle to perfection (Ascension - Mirac). Contemporary science definitely confirms that the fundamental condition of our existence is to revolve. There is no object, no being which does not revolve. Every thing whirls and man, a whirling dervish, carries on his life, his very existence by means of the revolution in the atoms, structural elements in his body, by the circulation of his blood, by his coming from the Earth and return to it, by his revolving with the Earth itself. The Sema (whirling dervishes) ceremony represents all a mystical journey of man's spiritual ascent through love, finding the truth and arriving to the "Perfect". Then he returns from this spiritual journeys as a man who reached maturity and a greater perfection, so as to love and to be of service to the whole creation, to all creatures without discriminating in regard to belief, class, or race. The dervish with his hat (his ego's tombstone), and his white skirt (his ego's shroud) is spiritually born to the truth. When he removes his black cloak, he journeys and advances to the spiritual maturity through the stages of the Sema. At the beginning and each stage of the Sema holding his arms crosswise he represents number one, and testifies to God's unity. While whirling his arms are open, his right hand directed to the sky ready to receive God's beneficence, gazing his left hand turned toward the earth for giving what he received to poor, he turns from right to left, pivoting around the heart. This is his way of conveying God's spiritual gift to the people upon whom God "looks with a Divine" watchfulness. Revolving around the heart, from right to left, he embraces all of humankind, all the creation with affection and love.
