And I will make you think your swan is a crow. What does he mean? Is this good advice? Act I scene III 1. Describe the setting. 2. Juliet s age has been remarked on by Capulet, Lady Capulet, and the Nurse. She will be 14 on July 31 in about 18 days. How might her age and inexperience with young men affect her feelings about love? Do you think a 13 year old s love is likely to be deeply felt? 3. The Nurse is one of Shakespeare s most famous comic characters. What does she say or do that makes her seem like a clown? Be specific. 4. Who is described as A Man of Wax? What does this mean? Today, how would he be described? 5. Here and there in the play, the young men and women are referred to as buds and flowers. What does an image of a flower suggest about Paris? 6. Lady Capulet tells Juliet to look at Paris carefully. She uses an extended metaphor to compare him to a book. How might Paris be similar to a book?
4 7. A foil in literature is a character whose behavior, actions, attitudes, etc., point out the strengths and weaknesses of another character. The nurse is a foil to Juliet and when the two are together there is a dramatic contrast. Provide your observations on how these characters differ. Act I scene IV 1. Describe the setting. 2. Explain the play on words with the words sole and soul. Why can t Romeo dance? 3. What ideas come to mind when you see the name Mercutio? How might Mercutio be a foil for Romeo? 4. What do you think Mercutio is implying when he refers to his face as a visor or mask? 5. Mercutio says he does not believe in dreams. He says dreams are brought by Queen Mab, the fairies midwife. Draw her flitting through a dream as described by Mercutio.
5 6. What in the Queen Mab speech shows the way Mercutio sees life and what is corrupt about society? 7. Do you sympathize with Romeo and his continual depression? Why or why not? Act I scene V 1. Describe the setting. 2. In the dialogue between the serving men, find the stage directions for scenery and props. Why would this be a clever thing to incorporate in the action? 3. Describe the atmosphere of the party. 4. Who says, She doth teach the torches to burn bright? Who is she? 5. What seems to be Romeo s standard or criteria for falling in love? 6. Why is Tybalt annoyed? What does he want to do to Romeo? 7. Why does Lord Capulet tell Tybalt to cool his heels? What makes you think Tybalt will get even later? 8. Several of the words with which Romeo and Juliet express their love have religious connotations: pilgrim, devotion, saints, palmers, prayer, and faith. What does this language suggest about the quality of their love?
