2 Let s write a story! Using the picture we have just drawn let s turn it into a short story!
3 Language??? This is the thinking that takes place before writing! The quality and richness of children s expressive language reveals how well they can structure a sentence. All children need a rich store of words, expressions and sentences created through conversations with interested adults. It is this rich language that children draw upon which supports them in the process of writing.

Mix It Up Using different types of words and grammar 4. Label It Providing children with the names of objects or actions 5. Tune In Engaging in activities or objects that interest children 6. Read Interactively Using books to engage children s participation 7. Read It Again and Again and Again! Reading books multiple times 8. Props, Please! Introducing objects that spark conversations 9. Make Music Engaging in musical activities 10. Sign It Using gestures or simple signs with words
5 A writer needs To understand what the writing is for i.e. the purpose. To know who the writing is for i.e. the audience. To gather ideas, thinking about what they want to write. To draw upon a store of words and ideas. To have well developed motor control.
6 To create a story mountain To know the organisation of print and words as units of meaning. To know about and use letter sounds. To be able to write a few tricky words. To be able to place and idea into a sentence. To be able to use a variety of different genres i.e. list, label, caption, letter.
7 How writing develops! Scribbling/drawing Most children begin by scribbling and drawing. Grasping the crayon or pencil with a full fist, a young scribbling child is exploring with space and form. They are creating a permanent record of their ideas and thoughts. Thick markers, crayons, and unlined paper are good writer's tools for this stage.

9 Letter-like forms and shapes At this stage of writing development, children begin to display their understanding that writers use symbols to convey their meaning. Writing begins to include shapes (circles, squares) and other figures. A writer in this stage will often write something and ask, "What does this say?" There's little orientation of forms and shapes to space (i.e., they appear in random places within the writing or drawing). Tubs of markers, crayons, and paper remain good writer's tools.

11 Letters! As a child's writing continues to develop, they will begin to use random letters. Most children begin with consonants, especially using the letters within their name. Pieces of writing are usually strings of upper-case consonants, without attention to spaces between words or directionality. Different types of paper, including memo pads, envelopes, lined paper and some smaller pens and pencils are good writer's tools at this stage. Tubs of foam letters and letter magnets are also handy.

13 Letters and spaces At this stage, children write with beginning and ending sounds. They also may begin to spell some high frequency words correctly. They will begin to write words the way they sound. Punctuation through full stops, capital letters and spaces between words begin as writers experiment with forming sentences.

18 Marking We use these symbols with the children so that we can show them where they have achieved go go green and where they need to improve think pink!
19 How to help at home! Let them explore writing with a range of different writing tools i.e. felt tips, chalk, crayons, biro, gel pens! Let them explore writing on a range of materials i.e. plain paper, lined paper, unused cards, envelopes, pavement, wall paper, till receipts! Let them write for themselves in birthday cards. Encourage them to write the sounds that they can hear.
20 Create your own stories and scribe them for them so they can see you writing. Let them write the shopping list. Let them send an or a text. Create a diary and let them write under photos to tell others what they have been doing. Give them praise and have fun!
21 Try to avoid Writing for them. By this we mean letting them copy your writing, writing in yellow / putting dots so they have to join them / go over them. Letting them write in capitals. Being negative!
