2 TRAINEESHIPS Do you want to gain the skills needed to progress on to an Apprenticeship? Traineeships are designed for young people aged 16 to 24 to help them take the first step on the career ladder. By completing a traineeship, candidates will develop the skills and workplace experience required by employers when hiring apprentices. Students will also have a lot more confidence in their own abilities and be job-ready. Traineeships are intended for young people who: are not currently in a job and have little work experience, but who are focused on work or the prospect of it are and are qualified below Level 3 or and have not yet achieved a full level 2 qualification Areas covered in the programme include: focused work preparation training - e.g. CV writing, interview preparation, job searching, interpersonal skills high-quality work experience - giving young people real-life work placement to enhance their skills and confidence English and Maths - for young people who have not achieved a GCSE grade C or equivalent or better The initiative is part of the government s wider aim to ensure the future workforce possesses the skills that employers want in their apprentices and employees. To find out more, please contact our Apprenticeships Team on APPRENTICESHIPS An Apprenticeship is a brilliant first step on the career ladder in many businesses. They are an excellent way of gaining nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage, and combine practical hands-on experience with academic knowledge. There are three levels of Apprenticeships available: Intermediate Level Apprenticeship - Level 2 Advanced Level Apprenticeship - Level 3 Higher Level Apprenticeship - Level 4 How do you become an apprentice? You might already be employed but if not, to find vacancies go to: Visit the Job Shop and complete your application There may be opportunities via our Apprenticeships Training Agency (ATA) If you are already employed... If you want to further your qualifications in the job you are currently in, you could ask your employer if this is possible. Apprenticeship training won t cost your employer anything if you are between the ages of How much can you earn? The National Minimum Wage for apprentices is 3.40 per hour (as of 1/10/16). But many employers pay more - the average salary is approximately 170 per week. What are the entry requirements? Typically 4 GCSEs at Grade C/GCSE Level 4 or above, including Maths and English, or a NVQ in a related subject, but each framework has different entry requirements so check our course sheets. What if you don t meet the entry criteria? Don t worry, there are a number of routes you can follow to help you get the required skills to do an Apprenticeship. 5 SOME OF THE EMPLOYERS WE WORK WITH: 90% of apprentices stay in employment after finishing their apprenticeship (includes 2% self-employed). 6 Iqra Umar Studying 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing Apprenticeship, Angel Dental Clinic in Sutton Coldfield Iqra said: I ve always been interested in working in a dental role and the chance to learn a range of new skills through an apprenticeship really appealed to me. After completing my A-levels I decided that going to university wasn t for me. I worked in various admin roles, but felt very limited as to where I could progress. Doing an apprenticeship will open up more opportunities for me and help me develop a career, rather than just a job. Dr Harish Ashley Purmah, Principal Dentist at Angel Dental Clinic commented said: Iqra is providing support in a range of dental treatments at the clinic and is constantly developing new skills. She has fitted in to the team really well and has a great rapport with the customers. He added: Apprenticeships are a great way of finding and nurturing new talent to create a strong workforce. It also helped that the college team we worked with has a lot of experience in the industry between them and already understood what we required in a potential candidate. They did all the initial interviews and assessments which saved me a lot of time and meant that I could focus on running my practice.

7 I GOT A JOB! Alice Cheeseman Studied Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeship in Hairdressing, now a Salon Director at her own salon Alice s journey from starting as an apprentice to owning her own salon, in just a few years, shows the career opportunities that following an apprenticeship route can open up; and the sky really is the limit! I was very interested in becoming a hairdresser and held a Saturday job at a salon at the time so I enrolled on an apprenticeship straight away and Walsall College was the best place recommended to me. I loved the fact that I was in a real working salon with real clients and earning a wage at the same time. The course set me up to run my own salon and I don t think I would have achieved this so quickly if it hadn t been for the apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are a great way to start learning a trade and gain real life experience at the same time to prepare yourself for the world of work. I believe in them that much I ve even taken on an apprentice in my salon to help someone else get a head start in their career.
