2 TRAINEESHIPS Do you want to gain the skills needed to progress on to an Apprenticeship? Traineeships are a new programme for young people aged 16 to 24 to help them take the first step on the career ladder. By completing a traineeship, candidates will develop the skills and workplace experience required by employers when hiring apprentices. Students will also have a lot more confidence in their own abilities and be jobready. Traineeships are intended for young people who: are not currently in a job and have little work experience, but who are focused on work or the prospect of it are and are qualified below Level 3 or and have not yet achieved a full level 2 qualification Areas covered in the programme include: focused work preparation training - eg CV writing, interview preparation, job searching, inter-personal skills high-quality work experience - giving young people real-life work placement to enhance their skills and confidence English and maths - for young people who have not achieved a GCSE grade C or equivalent or better The initiative is part of the government s wider aim to ensure the future workforce possesses the skills that employers want in their apprentices and employees. To find out more, please contact our Apprenticeships Team on APPRENTICESHIPS An Apprenticeship is a brilliant first step on the career path in many businesses. They are an excellent way of gaining nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage, and combine practical hands-on experience with academic knowledge. There are three levels of Apprenticeships available: Intermediate Level Apprenticeship - Level 2 Advanced Level Apprenticeship - Level 3 Higher Level Apprenticeship - Level 4 How do you become an apprentice? You might already be employed but if not, to find vacancies go to: or come into The Job Shop and complete an application If you are already employed... If you want to further your qualifications in the job you are currently in, you could ask your employer if this is possible. Apprenticeship training won t cost your employer anything if you are between the ages of How much can you earn? The National Minimum Wage for apprentices is 2.73 per hour (as of 1/10/14). But many employers pay more - the average salary is approximately 170 per week. What are the entry requirements? Typically 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Maths and English, or a NVQ in a related subject, but each framework has different entry requirements so check our course sheets. What if you don t meet the entry criteria? Don t worry, there are a number of routes you can follow to help you get the required skills to do an Apprenticeship. Please come in to the college or call and we can discuss your options.

4 APPRENTICESHIP FRAMEWORK All levels of Apprenticeships are made up of a number of elements known as a framework. This means you will get a range of qualifications and transferable skills as you progress through your Apprenticeship training. 6 Elena Peris-Cross Advanced Apprenticeship in Business and Administration I decided to take an Apprenticeship at Russells Hall Hospital, as part of the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, as I liked the idea of learning whilst gaining real life experience. A lot of my friends were struggling to find jobs after leaving college and university but Apprenticeships are a real foot in the door and give young people a chance to show their potential. I ve learnt to work in a very challenging and fast paced environment and was delighted to win a staff award in the annual awards ceremony earlier this year in the category of Rising Stars which was a huge surprise. I ve received overwhelming support from my colleagues, tutor and family and friends and they ve taught me everything I need to know about how to work in an office environment. My career goals change daily and once I've finished my course I want to look at becoming a Personal Assistant. I have an interest in Pathology and so I may look at my options in this area however it is comforting to know I have the skills and qualifications to come back and work in this type of role should I want to in the future. At first I thought my Apprenticeship would be mostly college work and that I wouldn t get many opportunities to work as an equal member of the team. But I was very wrong and I d now definitely encourage people to do an Apprenticeship! I have already been described as part of the furniture which does make me feel very welcome and relieved that my colleagues see me in this way.
7 Ashley Wood Advanced Apprenticeship in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Level 3) My initial ambitions were to become a race engineer but following poor results at A Level I decided to look for an Apprenticeship. After researching them, I came to the conclusion that an Apprenticeship was probably the best way for me to learn and would also still give me the opportunity to work on vehicles. Throughout the course there was a good balance of practical and theoretical learning which really helped my understanding. Since leaving the College I ve now gained a fulltime job as a mechanic at West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) where I completed my Apprenticeship. My day-to-day duties include the service and maintenance of the entire ambulance fleet as well as running repairs during the day if needed. I absolutely love working on the vehicles, problem solving and the variety of work on a day-to-day basis! I now aim to increase my knowledge in the motor trade before hopefully working my way up into management roles. On the job experience is what a lot of employers look for nowadays so I d definitely encourage others to go down this route as an Apprenticeship gives you that as well as recognised qualifications! Walsall College was an enjoyable place to learn with a relaxed atmosphere and tutors who were always willing to help when you needed support.
