Plastic Cups Line up the cups in a row or make a pattern. Stack the cups to build a tower or a pyramid. Hide an object under a cup and ask the child to find it. For more fun introduce more cups and mix them up with an object under only one. Use the cups as pylons. Have a relay race or set up an obstacle course. Balance a cup on your head. Make a silly face! Measuring Cups, Spoons, Pinchers and Funnels Use the measuring cups, spoons and pinchers to transfer water, bubbles, cereal, buttons and more from one container to another. Cook together or pretend to cook. Make your own highchair, crib or chair mobile by attaching cups and spoons with yarn. Sort the cups and spoons so that they fit inside of each other.
Rainbow Tupperware Sort, stack and fill the Tupperware. Use the Tupperware as drums and the lids as tambourines. Line them up from smallest to biggest or sort so that they fit inside of each other. Use them as targets (bean bags, balls, etc.) Fill the containers with materials such as feathers or pom-poms and introduce the cups, spoons and/ or pinchers. Ice Cube and Veggie Tray Provide a variety of items that the child can sort. They may sort items in to each compartment, sort by colors, shapes, sizes or create a pattern. Pretend to play restaurant or house. Use a dropper or spoons to mix water and food coloring. Watch the colors and liquid levels change as the child adds or transfers the liquids.
Bean Bags Hold, squish and flip the bean bag. Pass the bean bag to yourself or to a partner by sliding, throwing or lobbing. Match your colored bean bag with an object, paper target or container that matches. Play Simon says. Children of all ages will love to copy you and you copy them. Place the bean bags on the floor and crawl, hop or dance over them. Buttons Sort buttons with your hands, cups, spoons or pinchers. Sort in to different containers, sections of a container, by color, by shape or amount. Feed pipe cleaner or yarn through the holes of the buttons. Add more buttons to create a keychain, bracelet, etc. Pick a button out of a cup and use its characteristics to play eye-spy. I spy something that is orange or square. Wait for a response and then point out and talk about these items.
Waffle Balls Place the ball in to a cup. Reach in or turn the cup upside down to get it out. Place, bounce or throw the ball in to a cup or container. Next turn step back or do a trick. Bounce the ball to yourself or to a partner. Next bounce it and try to catch it with a cup. Feed pipe cleaner or yarn through the ball. Use your pipe cleaner or yarn to swing the ball. Straws Huff and puff and blow in to your straw. Place a feather in front of you. Blow in to your straw and see your feather lift, float or be pushed away. Try again with more or less force. Place a pom-pom in front of you. Blow in to your straw and race your pom-pom to the finish line. Put a q-tip in to the straw. Blow and blast your q-tip to your target area. Place the bean bags on the floor and crawl, hop or dance over them.
Mirror Play peek-a-boo. You hide behind the mirror and peek, as well as the child peek at themselves in the mirror. Talk about what you see in the mirror (I see you are happy, I see brown eyes) and then ask the child what they see. Make happy/sad/excited faces in the mirror. Ask the child to make a face with an emotion. Draw a face on the back with an emotion or special facial feature. Whiteboard For the leader s use as they see fitting. Children can scribble or draw. Ask them openended questions about what you see. Draw a person and play guess who. Draw a treasure map and have a scavenger hunt. Talk about your environment as you go. Play Pictionary. Once the children guess your drawing, ask them to act it out.
Popsicle Sticks Wrap pipe cleaner around the stick. Pull it off or un-wrap it and observe the shape. Wrap again Glue or tape 2 to 4 sticks together as a star shape. Weave yarn around the star. Give to the child to un-ravel and possibly re-weave the yarn. Use the sticks to create mini puppets. Use the sticks to stack or create a two dimensional fence, house, castle, etc. Use the sticks to create a letter or a number. Tape Tape designated areas to help children understand the boundaries. Tape a road or a railroad track. Use toys or your bodies to be the vehicles. Tape an area that is a farm or a zoo. Tape a start and a finish line. Race yourself or others. Try placing a pom-pom or a ball in a spoon and balance it to the finish line. Tape hopscotch on to the floor.
