1 Kitchen Remodeling Dictionary Accent lighting Lighting that puts an emphasis on display items such as china cupboards. Ambient Lighting Lighting that is dispersed throughout the entire room. Appliances Refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, and sinks. Appliance Garage A roll up or single door unit that is located underneath a cabinet typically used for the storage of smaller appliances. Auxiliary Sink A second sink in the kitchen, which is used for preparation or clean up.

2 Backsplash Vertical extension to a counter which will protect the wall form splashes of water. A backsplash can be constructed from tile, granite, stainless steel, and silestone. Banquette A bench that is built in along a wall and usually used for breakfast areas. Base Cabinets Sits underneath the kitchen countertop, and is typically the largest storage area. Breakfast Bar A counter that is in a kitchen where lighter meals are usually served. People are often seated on stools, and the bar can be raised or even throughout. Cabinet A cupboard with shelves for storing kitchen items.

3 Cabinet Fillers A board that matches the cabinet finish and is used to fill spaces between cabinets and walls or other cabinets during the installation process. Cabinet Hardware The metal fittings that are incorporated into a cabinet. Cabinet Rail A horizontal structure of a door panel or face frame of a cabinet. Caulk A waterproof sealant that is placed in cracks where air or water could go through. Classic Crown Molding Generally used for capping walls, pilasters, or cabinets. Classic crown molding is normally larger and has more decorative profiles.

4 Concealed Hinge Attached to the door and inside end panel or a cabinet. This type of hinge is not visible from the exterior. Cooktop A cooking unit, normally hot plates or burners that are built into or on top of the kitchen countertop. Countertop A flat working surface that sits on top of waist level kitchen cabinets or drawers. Countertops can be made from granite, quartz, laminate, tile, and wood. Decorative Hardware Refers to the appliance handles, cabinet knobs, and cabinet pulls inside the kitchen. Downdraft Ventilation System Kitchen ventilation that pulls air of cooking through a vent and releases it to the outside. Ventilation systems are integrated with the cooktop or installed adjacent to it.

5 Drywall Plaster that is placed between layers of facing paper, and is used for interior wall surfaces as a substrate to paint or tile. Elevation The height above the ground, another surface, or a position of how high something should be. End Panels Cabinet accessory used to finish the end of a cabinet, or the side of an appliance. Exposed Hinge Attached the door and front frame of the cabinet. This hinge is visible from the exterior. Face Frame Cabinets Cabinets with vertical and horizontal trim that surround the cabinet box.

6 Flooring Materials in which a floor is made. Kitchen flooring can be done with ceramic tile, natural stone, wood, vinyl, laminate, and many more materials. Floor Plans An overview of the project in a form of a drawing. Frameless Cabinets Do not have trim boards covering the edges of the box,instead they are covered with veneer that matches the cabinet face. Granite Countertop A hard natural stone countertop that does not scratch and is resistant to heat and stains. Granite countertops also come in many colors. Hood Insert A liner for housing the filter system, fan and lights. This insert is made from a noncombustible sheet metal.

7 Insulation Material that is used to stop electricity, heat, and sound from going in and out of a certain space. Interior Trim Finishing trim that is around doors, windows casings, and baseboards. Island An area in a kitchen that can be accessed from all sides. Islands are another area for countertops and cabinets. Kitchen Column A vertical frame that supports parallel fixtures. Laminate A thin material such as wood or plastic that is glued to the exterior of a cabinet or countertop.

8 Lazy Susan A corner cabinet that has vertical mounted shelves that can be turned in a 360 angle with just a push. Light Fixture An electrical device used to create artificial light. There are many types of fixtures, but all have a fixture body and a light socket to hold the lamp. Light Switch Molding Controls whether the lights are on or off. Light switches are usually mounted on the wall. An embellished strip of wood or other material that is used to finish a surface such as a wall or around doors and windows. Pendant A lighting fixture that is hung from the ceiling that contains one or more lamps. Peninsula An area of cabinets and countertop that is secure on one side, but can be accessed from three sides.

9 Preparation Center A long counter top that is meant for prepping food. The preparation center is normally located between the sink and cooking surface or the sink and refrigerator. Sink Bowl shaped plumbing fixture that can be used to wash hands, dishes, or other items. Stile Woodwork technique that is used in making doors or other decorative features for cabinets. Tile Piece of hard wearing material such as stone, metal, ceramic, or porcelain that is used to cover the floor, walls, or countertop. Ventilation System An exhaust fan that pushes inside air to the outside.

10 Wall Board Board made from wood pulp, plaster, or other material that covers walls and ceilings. Wall Sconce Lighting A light fixture that is mounted on the wall. Wet Bar A bar or counter top with a smaller sink that is used for making and serving mixed drinks. Wood Shim Thin slip of wood or metal that is placed between objects to level them.
